The Official Metal Gear Solid 4 Topic

2007 marks the 20th anniversary of the acclaimed Metal Gear franchise. The series has come a long way since its beginning. 2007 also marks the conclusion to the Metal Gear Solid series, and with it, Solid Snake's story also reaches its finality.

This topic is for discussion of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Interviews, magazine scans, pictures, trailers, everything is to be included in this topic. Share your opinions on certain aspects of the game (visuals, story, gameplay), and feel free to ask any questions in regards to the MGS series as a whole.

mgs4 looks totally awesome, except playing as old snake will bug me.

i want to play as snake in his prime again, like in mgs and mgs2.

"War has changed."

Kojima stated that the game would take place over a period of time, and it would take place in numerous locations. However, the first two trailers have only shown the Middle East, so that's what we'll have to work with in the time being.
The trailers gave a very clear indication as to what state the world is in right now. It's saturated with war. The worst part is: war has become a business. PMCs have been established to do the fighting for the countries that they are hired by. Governments pay PMCs to fight their wars, to save them costs of their own military supplies. The PMCs and its mercenaries are paid to fight for their employers, and therefore expand into a well-fueled business.
ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, and use ID-tagged gear. They have nanomachines inside of them that enhance and regulate their actions. Everything they do is kept under control. They are ID-tagged, which keeps them in line with who they work for. When war reaches conditions like these, it becomes a business, a routine.
It is clearly a world that Solid Snake and Otacon feared to see become a reality. It is the kind of world that they fought to prevent. Despite the years of sabotaging countless Metal Gear units, this is what the world has come to. Despite their best efforts, they haved ultimately FAILED. Nuclear weapons are now empty threats. They are common, probably as common as Metal Gears themselves now. Solid Snake and Otacon, along with Philanthropy as a whole, set forth with an idea: Eradicate Metal Gear, and strive for nuclear proliferation. Their motto is "Let the World Be." No more war. Their goal was the complete opposite of Liquid Snake's (Big Boss'). Big Boss and Liquid wanted a world filled with war: the only place where a soldier could truly live. Despite the efforts of Solid Snake and Otacon, Liquid Snake has won (and Big Boss is most certainly rolling in his grave). The Patriots, along with the rest of the world, have fallen into the trap. They themselves are creating a world that Big Boss dreamed of. However, it's not perfect yet. The soldiers are still under the control of the governments who employed them. Although the world is now overrun with war, the soldiers are still being by politicians. This is where Liquid will come in. He has firmly established Outer Heaven, as a mother company to five smaller PMCs. He will take advantage of this "world of war" that the world's leaders have created. He has assembled a massive army, and when the time is right, he will strike. In a way, the world helped make Big Boss' dream a reality. All Liquid has to do now is add the finishing touches.
The UN knows that things have gone way out of hand. They now see how serious the situation has become. Shadow Moses was a clear indication as to how much of a threat Liquid Snake is. Now he is once again in command of a massive army, one that could rival the military of the United States. They know what this could mean to the world. Who do they call on to stop Liquid Snake? The man who fought long, hard years to try and prevent the world from ever reaching this point in the first place.
