Patty Jenkins knew expectations would be stratospheric for Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot, a former Miss Israel who served as a combat trainer in the Israeli Army. The film (in theaters Friday, June 2) is the summers most anticipated release and also the first time the halter-top-and-hot-pants-wearing superhero, who was introduced in 1941, has had a movie all her own. But Ms. Jenkins, whose only previous feature, Monster, won Charlize Theron an Oscar in 2004, said she felt pressure most intensely from herself.

I have a high bar for myself already; I always want to do something beautiful and meaningful, Ms. Jenkins said by phone from her Los Angeles home. I was aware that I was the first person of all time getting to direct a Wonder Woman film, and that was taken very seriously.

She wasnt the first choice: Michelle MacLaren left, with Warner Bros. citing creative differences; and Ms. Jenkins said she and Ms. MacLaren ran into each other as the switch was happening, and hugged. Were cool, Ms. Jenkins said.

Her vision of Wonder Woman someone strong, loving and vulnerable, who exudes sincerity, which Ms. Jenkins says is sorely lacking in films has most critics in a swoon. Here are edited excerpts from the conversation.

I wish this movie had been around when I was a little kid.

I just got a little teary hearing that, because it hits me every once in a while, when I go to mommy-daughter events. I knew it was going to be PG-13, and theres so much there for adults, but also that little girls were going to want to see it, so I tried to make it as safe as possible. If we succeeded in bringing something to people while theyre growing up, that would be something.

How does the director and writer of a film Roger Ebert deemed the third best of the decade not immediately get hired to make another feature?

There was a movie I was trying to make right after Monster, a bigger behemoth, the Chuck Yeager story. It was a life dream, but it just didnt line up. We just had issues with the life rights ultimately. Also, I got pregnant, and making a feature is not compatible with the first years of a childs life. Then the bottom fell out of the indie film world, and nobody was interested in what I brought, but instead in what I could do for them. I had my own scripts, but people didnt want to read them. They only wanted to do tent poles. So I began doing pilots.

Do you think gender hurt you in terms of trying to make feature films?

I dont know. Ironically, tent poles were what I was asked to do, though they werent ones I was into. I think [being a woman] might have had something to do with why people were not interested in my screenplays. It was, Ah, we dont want that point of view, we want our point of view. If you want more diversity in the industry, you need diverse people writing scripts and developing them.

When you started the project, was the casting nailed down?

The only casting in place was Gal. Im so picky about casting, and when I heard that theyd cast Wonder Woman, my heart sank. But oh my God, it was one of the luckiest things that ever happened to me, because Gal Gadot is so magical and wonderful. They found the best person in the universe.

Do you think Wonder Woman needed a woman to direct it?

I dont think any movie has to have any specific kind of person. I wasnt directing a woman, I was just directing a hero, and that freed me up to go broader with her personality than someone might be able to do if they were afraid to make her vulnerable and loving and warm, and not always right, which is absolutely imperative to a leading character. Thats been one of the hardest things about leading characters: Other people might not have felt safe, or worried [that] if theres any vulnerability, what thats saying? But main characters have to have flaws, and have a journey and be rich. I felt the same way about Monster. A woman didnt have to direct it, and I wasnt directing a womans story. I was directing a person.

Did you get studio pushback on making Wonder Woman vulnerable?

There were a lot of conversations, definitely, and it was a constant surprise to some people that I was doing it. But you look back at the history of characters, and oftentimes any notion that the lead person doesnt get to be anything but impeccably right, that becomes D.O.A. Thats been a problem with some of the female characters theyve tried to put forth. Theyre too hard or too strong. I think Hunger Games was one of the great things changing that. Shes just a girl.

Monster was an indie, and this was a huge movie in terms of its production budget. Was that ever daunting?

Surprisingly, no. The TV projects I was doing were getting to $11 million or $12 million, shooting over an eight-to-10-day period, shutting down the Chicago River with helicopters and 1,000 people. In TV, you can end up working with a very high budget. Then, my vision was so clear for Wonder Woman. Its the exact same math applied to more.

Will there be another Wonder Woman film?

Yeah, I sure hope so. It seems that way.

Youre doing it?

Id love to, and thats definitely a conversation, but nothing we are announcing yet.

This may be a cheesy question, but what do you want people to take away from this movie?

Did you say cheesy? Cheesy is one of the words banned in my world. Im tired of sincerity being something we have to be afraid of doing. Its been like that for 20 years, that the entertainment and art world has shied away from sincerity, real sincerity, because they feel they have to wink at the audience because thats what the kids like. We have to do the real stories now. The world is in crisis.

I wanted to tell a story about a hero who believes in love, who is filled with love, who believes in change and the betterment of mankind. I believe in it. Its terrible when it makes so many artists afraid to be sincere and truthful and emotional, and relegates them to the too-cool-for-school department. Art is supposed to bring beauty to the world.

Patty Jenkins Reddit AMA: Superman, Romance, And What Influenced Wonder Woman

Despite the fact that the movie she just made had a huge weekend Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins took the time to do a reddit AMA where she answered some questions about what influenced Wonder Woman, what other DC properties she would like to work on someday, the romance in Wonder Woman, and offered some advice for someone just getting into film school.

When asked what DC properties she would like to direct someday:

Thank you so much. It's no secret that I love Superman but right now I'm just happy doing Wonder Woman.

When asked about how much of an influence Zack Snyder had on the movie:

I think Zack mostly had an influence in getting things back in order to be a good origin story, and then Geoff and I worked super closely to work on the script and the story and Zack was a great producer, but creatively they gave me the reins.

When asked what other things influenced the movie besides Richard Donner's Superman:

When asked about what was the most important lesson learned from the movie and whether or not she would like to get more into the Greek mythology:

Faith in mankind at every step was restored by people's passion for sharing this story and now, by their support of it. I love the mythology too and I think we can't help but delve deeper into it in the future to some degree.

As for the romance, yes I thought it was absolutely necessary. I think that all of the great epic classic films that I was basing the movie on had that as an integral part of them, and I wanted Diana's story to have EVERYTHING no lesser than any other superhero. It's not about her needing anybody, itï¿½s about her deserving someone amazing.

What surprised her the most about taking on such a huge project:

What surprised me was how fun it was, truly. As hard and daunting the task was, we laughed every day and we're all great friends so it was a wonderful job.

When asked for advice on someone just going into film school as a producer:

Hard work and passion are worth more than talent, but also really try to learn everything you can about great storytelling and how you can facilitate bringing that to the screen.

What inspired the pure heart that the movie has:

I would say that Wonder Woman inspires it because she herself has the pure heart but I also felt that that really missing in the world right now, and so that was exactly what I was excited to celebrate in this film. Some very pure hopes and ideals in addition to how badass she is.

The AMA had a ton of other questions including her talking about her time on television, whether or not she'd ever think about directing a Star Wars movie, what movies she' looking forward to this year, and a few other questions about the film. Jenkins has been fantastic during the press run for this movie. She's been engaging, calm, and very entertaining in almost every interview she's been in. She's got a lot coming her way and she deserves every bit of it.

Summary: Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman Director Says Shared Universes Not Always A Good Idea

Director Patty Jenkins says she doesn't think it's always a good idea for studios to try and create shared cinematic universes. These comments come in the midst of a celebratory time for Jenkins, following the release of Wonder Woman last week. The film which gave Gal Gadot's Diana Prince a chance to finally shine in her own standalone, live-action feature film has been met with widespread critical acclaim and is currently one of the highest-rated comic book movies of all time on Rotten Tomatoes. But while Wonder Woman's record-breaking box office success can mean hopefully good things for the future of female-led blockbuster outings, it's also an important movie to every DCEU fan around the world.

Following the divisive reactions to both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad last year, many DCEU critics and supporters had started to wonder when the cinematic universe might be able to finally turn things around. Fortunately, Wonder Woman found a way to do that and has since emerged as the long-awaited turning point in the DCEU that fans had been waiting for. However, just because her film found a way to make its connections to other DC films a strength, Jenkins doesn't think it's always a good idea for shared universes to exist.

During a recent Reddit AMA yesterday, Jenkins opened up about what it was like making Wonder Woman in an already established, functioning cinematic universe, and what she thinks about the current explosion of shared universes that it feels like every major studio is attempting to create right now:

I would say I have very mixed feelings about that. There's a version of every kind of film that I celebrate, but there seems there's also a tendency to make a mess if there's too much going on so it's not something I think is always a great idea.

Obviously, this boom in cinematic universes in the entertainment industry right now is a byproduct of the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has steadily taken over the industry in the past nine years. While the Warner Bros.-controlled DCEU is the most viable of the universes that have been established since then too, there are a number of shared universes in the works right now that don't feel nearly as believable or necessary.

Jenkins comments also come on the same weekend that The Mummy has hit theaters, which is the first film in Universalï¿½s announced Dark Universe franchise. But with overwhelmingly negative reviews and even more disappointing opening numbers at the box office so far, the studio's attempt to bring all of their most classic movie monsters into one universe isn't off to a good start, after already being met with skepticism from both general moviegoers and film insiders alike. So while Wonder Woman has proven to be one of the biggest successes of the year so far, Jenkins comments here may hold even more weight than most studio executives would like them to.

Even Hillary Clinton is down to see Wonder Woman, and it just might have something to do with President Donald Trump.

That's what the 69-year-old politician revealed during a surprise video message presented at the Women in Film Los Angeles' Crystal + Lucy Awards on Tuesday night in Beverly Hills. Clinton taped the 95-second message to honor her friend, Democratic activist and Clinton supporter Elizabeth Banks who was on hand to receive one of the evening's highest honors, the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film.

First, Clinton thanked WIF for its "commitment to lifting up women directors, producers, writers, composers and executives," and then she name-dropped the sword-toting powerhouse who is ruling the box office. "Now I haven't seen Wonder Woman yet, but I'm going to, in part because it's directed by the fabulous Patty Jenkins," gushed Clinton. "But something tells me that a movie about a strong, powerful woman fighting to save the world from a massive international disaster is right up my alley."

The internet was up in arms recently about female only screenings of the new movie Wonder Woman. Some people loved this idea. Others really hated it. The movie's director, however, isn't quite sure how to feel. She told The Frame that she has mixed feelings about the situation and for a good reason.

When the Alamo Drafthouse theater in Austin, Texas announced that it was featuring a women-only screening of Wonder Woman, a lot of women were excited to take part. Their excitement was overshadowed by a lot of angry men. It became such an ordeal that celebrities, like Don Cheadle, weighed in.

Now, the movie's director, Patty Jenkins, reveals that she hasn't taken a side. "On the one hand, I'm so delighted by those screenings," she said. "On the other hand I can imagine being offended if I'm excluded from those screenings, particularly because Wonder Woman herself has a very, very passionate fan base, many of whom are men."

Superhero movies, as well as most action movies, are male-dominated. The obvious response to this would be, "They can go to any other screening. This is for women." However, Jenkins makes a really good point. These types of movies are male-dominated, which means they perpetuate a lot of stereotypes about masculinity.

"Many of whom are men who are disenfranchised from their own gender or their own identity," Jenkins went on. "And I would never want to leave them out of anything, you know?"

The issue has so far been dealt with as though it exists within binaries and it doesn't. Jenkins responded to the issue with a lot of consideration. In the end, she decided that she could go either way. She, along with many women across the world, celebrates the fact that there's finally a movie to make women feel powerful.

Wonder Woman became the first film directed by a woman to make more than $100 million in its opening weekend. Are you surprised?

I'm stunned by the success of the film. But I'm also surprised how rare it's been.

How long until we can stop pointing out women's achievements because they're not surprising anymore?

I can't wait till enough women filmmakers have had a chance to make movies of this size and scale and those movies have been successful. There will still be conversation about smaller issues. But it will be nice that they can just be filmmakers making films.

It's not like we haven't seen female action heroes before in Divergent or The Hunger Games or Tomb Raider or Underworld. Why Wonder Woman?

There was a very difficult time when a female hero was a man in a woman's body. Hunger Games really changed that: a woman leading a non--woman's film in the action genre. I think Wonder Woman does that on a very big scale.

Wonder Woman has always been a proxy for America: scarily powerful, but a force for good. Did you make love her superpower with current affairs in mind?

She always has stood for truth and love. Her genesis was based on Artemis. However, I do think that it's very important right now to celebrate exactly that quality.

Why?

Our fantasy of a hero is that he's the good guy who is going to shut down the bad guy. That has got to change if we want to deal with the crisis that we're in. There is no bad guy. We are all to blame. New kinds of heroics need to be celebrated, like love, thoughtfulness, forgiveness, diplomacy, or we're not going to get there. No one is coming to save us.

Your dad was an Air Force F-4 fighter pilot who won a Silver Star in Vietnam. Did his experience of war color your thoughts?

Yeah. My father wanted to be a hero. He went to the Air Force Academy, was valedictorian, and then he found himself strafing villagers in Vietnam in a war he didn't want to be in and didn't understand. He was extremely conflicted about the line where he went from being the good guy to possibly being the bad guy.

What did you do with your first big paycheck?

I've yet to have one. One day. I'll tell you when that day comes.

Your last film was Monster, about a female serial killer. Is there a through line here?

I'm as interested in exceptional characters as men are. It's very easy for me to be curious about what it's like to be [killer] Aileen Wuornos, just as I am about what it's like to be Wonder Woman. And in both cases, I think it's about what you do with power.

You have a reputation for being very exacting. How do you get the best out of people?

I want greatness. To me, aiming for greatness in a day might mean you work 20% harder, but you make that day worth it 10 times over.

Why have you banned the word cheesy?

When artists, who are supposed to speak freely, are afraid to be earnest and do beauty and sincerity, you've got a serious problem on your hands. Cheesy makes people afraid to be emotional. And I won't have it.

Your husband [Sam Sheridan] is a martial-arts fighter?

He fought as his way in, but then from there he's really become known as a writer about fighting.

If you had to settle a duel, what style would you choose?

Boxing or mixed marital arts, probably. I'd rather not do it, but at least I understand those.

I think that it seems every few years we get some type of female led action film that everyone says will change the game in terms of female led block busters but then there's no follow up with other projects and then some female tent pole bombs and the suits and cognoscenti point to it and say "See, these types of films don't generate the revenue to justify making more", ignoring the other ones that were successful and even critically acclaimed. Hopefully being that WW is such a hit as well as being part of the current trend of super hero spectacle will dent that mentality. I know we all hope for that, what with all the great female comic book characters out there waiting to be adapted.

Well, good for Jenkins, really. Not just for doing a great job directing the film, but also because she really seems to get and be into the character of Diana. So good to know she and Johns are already writing the treatment and seems like she's all but set in stone to direct the sequel. But seems like a given at this point.

Just under a month after Wonder Woman 2 was announced and slotted for Dec. 13, 2019, the film now has a likely director. And that director is probably Patty Jenkins. There was a concern and rumblings over why she wasnt immediately signed to helm the follow-up to her $800 million+ (as of next Friday) box office blowout, as well as concerns in the aftermath of the release as to why a sequel wasnt immediately green-lit. But, in this case, we would have been wise to actually wait and see what actually happened before protesting a potential injustice. And, in this case, Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. essentially did the right thing. Wonder Woman 2 will open just before Christmas of 2019, and Jenkins will almost certainly return to the directors chair.

This matters for two reasons. First, as Deadline reported, one of the reasons for the holdup was that Jenkins was playing financial hardball, using the goodwill and financial success of the first picture to make sure she got paid whatever a male director signing on for a huge sequel to a blow-out original would have gotten in her situation in a deal that may make her the best-paid female director in town. While you can argue that some franchises are so producer-driven that the director isnt necessarily of grand importance, Jenkins was a huge part of selling Wonder Woman. If DC Films is serious about that filmmaker-driven approach, she is as valuable to Wonder Woman as (for example) James Gunn is to Guardians of the Galaxy.

The other big reason this matters is because it will mark the first time in recent history that a female director has helmed both the franchise starter and the sequel. There are a few quasi-exceptions. Walt Disneys Thanksgiving 2019 Frozen sequel will again be directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck. And after Jennifer Yuh Nelson directed DreamWorks Animations Kung Fu Panda 2 to $665m worldwide in 2011, she co-directed 2016s Kung Fu Panda 3 with Alessandro Carloni. And all three Bridget Jones movies had female directors, with Sharon Maguire helming the first and third and Beeban Kidron directing The Edge of Reason. Otherwise, Hollywood has a habit of hiring women to start a female-driven franchise only for male directors to get the reins for the sequel.

Catherine Hardwicke directed the first/best Twilight to $394 million in 2008 only to be replaced by Chris Weitz for New Moon. The next three sequels were directed by David Slade and Bill Condon, the latter of whom went from Breaking Dawn to Walt Disneys Beauty and the Beast and then Universals The Bride of Frankenstein. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed Fifty Shades of Grey to $571m in 2015, but micromanaging by author E.L. James led a shake-up, only for Universal/Comcast Corp. to hire James Foley for the sequels. Phyllida Lloyd directed Universals Mamma Mia! to $609m worldwide in 2008, but next years Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! will be written and directed by Ol Parker. Even Waynes World replaced Penelope Spheeris with Stephen Surjik for Waynes World 2.

Comparatively speaking, James Gunn will direct all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies, just as Barry Sonnenfeld helmed all three Men in Black films, Steven Spielberg will soon have five Indiana Jones movies and Michael Bay made five Transformers movies. There are plenty of franchises (Planet of the Apes, Bourne, Captain America) where the sequels were helmed by someone other the director of the first film. There are plenty of franchises (Harry Potter, Batman, Iron Man, the new Star Trek) that changed directors after the first sequel. But assuming nothing changes, Patty Jenkins will not only be the rare female filmmaker to helm a big live-action tentpole, but shell be the first one invited back for the sequel. And shell be paid handsomely for the honor.

Wonder Woman 2, starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins, opens Dec. 13, 2019 and will take our favorite DC Films hero to the 1980s for some unfortunately timely Cold War adventures. Maybe shell run into the Minions.

Particularly because the great thing about these actors is you have such talented funny capable people, so that was already great material for them to work from. ...
