even if only a small subset buys the Pro, I don't think that subset would be too happy if they bought a Pro this year only for Sony to turn around and release a version with a 4K player next year.

that's why there are pros and cons for both options. and why it's best to provide both options to the consumer.

well, let's hope Spencer stays the head of Xbox for a long while, and let's hope Sony can get their own Spencer equivalent.

They really don't need a Spencer equivalent. Sony's been doing very well for years now. After Ken's mess with the launch of the PS3 they've been doing great. This is really the first mis-step (possibly) that they've taken. Not enough to knock them off at all. The PS4 is still an amazing system....you know if you play games and not just worry about console features.

well, to be quite honest, I haven't been that impressed with any of the PS4 exclusives.

Infamous Second Son was ok. TLOU didn't really appeal to me. Same with Bloodborne. Uncharted series doesn't interest me much either.

No Man's Sky sounds like a mess, so I'm glad I avoided that.

The exclusive I was most interested in, Street Fighter V, was a complete disappointment as well.

Other multiplat games I really anticipated like Dragon Age Inquisition and Fallout 4 were somewhat of a letdown.

So, I've not only been underwhelmed by the features of the PS4, I've also been a bit disappointed in the exclusives and games.

Not saying PS4 isn't an amazing system. Just that I haven't been terribly wowed by anything yet this gen.

I think that's partly to do with my own changing gaming habits. I've become much more of a casual gamer in recent years. someone who does use the console as much as a media player ( if not more so ) besides a gaming machine.

There are upcoming games I'm looking forward to on the PS4, like Rise of Tomb Raider in the immediate future and the Final Fantasy VII Remake coming whenever. The FFVII Remake, being a timed exclusive to the PS4 which may never come to the X1, is a reason why I'm a bit hesitant to jump ship back to MS.

I was looking forward to Skyrim Remastered but the recent mod news has tempered my enthusiasm for that somewhat.

The PS4 also has JRPG and fighting games that are usually exclusive - but even those are somewhat hit or miss in terms of interesting me.

And the PS4 does have the power advantage - even more so now with the Pro. And I can't ignore that either. But I can't deny that the X1 has the advantage in terms of features and overall functionality. Hence, my unending quandary........lol.

Let me try this again:

Consoles are about simplicity, and accessibility. As time has gone on computers and computer gaming moves so quickly in tech, it makes it expensive, and complex. I used to be a hardcore PC gamer, and it was. But now most PC gamers relish in that now a days many of them are big tech junkies and tinkerers.

But consoles were always and more so lately have been about simplicity. Not just for us but for the developers. We all know that I will be able to play the last PS3 game like The Last of Us as easy as I could my first PS3 game Resistance. It is why people buy these things because they want to play games as simply as possible.

Hard drives and internet functionality is just where gaming was going period. On a macro level. It was not about having better graphics, it was a massive part of the gaming world that was being introduced.

Sony with the PS2 and the network adapter messed up, it's why the 360 kicked the PS3 hard because the original Xbox had online play as a uniform functionality and it was where gaming was going. Sony was stubborn and thought it was just a phase.

Hard-drives were just an evolutionary upgrade but one that became uniform. Just a necessity. Mainly because of the digital downloading era. Just like CD's and memory cards started to come out because some things games just require.

But this is something different that could lead down a dangerous road. The Pro really adds nothing to the gameplay or functionality of the games. It just makes it look a little prettier. It could snowball into something more. Right now MS and Sony are saying that every PS4 game made this generation will play on both. I could see them breaking that rule, I mean Nintendo got slammed when games like Perfect Dark required the damn expansion pack. It blew up in their face.

I could see someone looking at the Pro and Slim this Christmas and saying...well what does it do different? If they hear it's more powerful, that will start to create confusion and take away the core aspect of simplicity and uniformity with the general audience. I just see doing down this rabbit hole is way different then having different hard-drive sizes that really don't do much to the games. Just limits how many one can have installed.

I think going this route could lead to some exclusives for the Pro/Scorpio they say no now, but there was really no showmanship of something like PS4.5's either. This takes away and starts to muddle the waters where the GA may start to get confused and just walk away from consoles such as these. After seeing the Pro I think it just seems pointless and possibly dangerous if they go down this road further. Uniformity of power and simplicity of use and accessibility (that is a huge one) is big. People may start thinking they have to have a PS4 Pro to play certain games, and if they are told not they may get more confused and wonder why the Pro even really exists. Like I said now they can use the 4K thing as an excuse but if they try this again with the PS5 let's say they may not have that rock to hide behind.

Hope this is clearer.

I just think this is a dangerous and foolish route for consoles to start to go down. Because I think it takes away the core aspect on what makes console gaming what it is.

under stood.
but the thing is the both company's and the dev's that worked under them have been pushing that the ps4 and Xbox one are pc interviews alot. from inception.

I even remember the director Jen's Anderson of dcuo when it was under SCE which owned sony before them becoming day break studio's and allowing their game to be on other consoles beside sony said the ps4 was a pc . All prior to sony selling off their MMo division of theirs .

also I just found this below just now and yah I'm sure alot of people will find this strange. but Inot sure I wouldn't buy too much into it or not if sony really did state this.

Xbox didn't prompt Sony to make PS4 Pro - they were worried about players migrating to PC

The world of consoles is a bit of a weird one at the moment, what with both Microsoft and Sony making mid-generation hardware improvements,...

I heard that a while back too. I'd assumed that it didn't need to be said as the Neo rumours were around so much earlier than the Scorpio and the Neo is coming out much earlier and is less powerful so it looked if anything like Sony had the idea before Microsoft (which could have been responding if they somehow found about it). If neither knew of the other's plans it's a coincidence that they both decided to come out with mid gen upgrades for the first time.

Yep.

Really hope so. And Nintendo could do with a Spencer equivalent to advise them too!

So Farming Simulator tweeted out that their new game will have mod support on both X-Box and PS4, leading some to speculate further on what the real deal with Bethesda is.

One thing I heard is that Sony wanted all mods to be QA tested to make sure one wouldn't go and brick their system, but I'm assuming Bethesda was against that because they wanted people to feel like they could do whatever they want. But whatever the case is, it doesn't sound as simply as Sony blocking all mods. They had specific reasons for blocking Bethesda's mods.

The issue isnt that Sony wont allow mods. They have in the past and were allowing Bethesda to do it here. Sony isnt anti-mods so people need to stop getting that twisted. On one hand its kind of silly to expect Bethesda to QA material they didnt create bc there is no money made and that would be a resource hog. One the otherhand, they have really bad track record with releasing broken games on Sony's platforms and the mods have broken the games by previous accounts

this is interesting.

don't know much about Farming Simulator. I wonder if their mods are of a different "nature" than the Fallout 4 mods - like, not as complex?

still, though, it does call into question Bethesda's position if another company can get their mods to work on the PS4.

The way I see it, people tend to believe the first thing they hear, so since Bethesda came out and said something, people are gravitating towards that and blaming Sony. Sony most likely won't address the issue so we may never hear their side, but I guarantee that the tables would be flipped if Sony came out and said something first.

instead of engaging in a war of words, I'd rather Sony and Bethesda work together behind the scenes to resolve the issue.

Nice. And it makes sense now. You do need an HDR TV (or other compatible display device). Hopefully we see this feature used as much as possible.

yeah. I knew it was too good to be true to enjoy HDR benefits on a 1080p tv.....lol.

but if I get a 4K/HDR tv, I'll probably be switching over to the Pro anyways.

hopefully there will be some great 4K tv deals this BF/Xmas and maybe some good Pro deals, too.

Are you trading in your regular PS4 at the same time? Would like to know what kind of deals are out there for that.

yes, if I upgrade to the Pro, I'll be trading in my regular PS4 at the same time or right before.

I'm hoping at the Pro's launch, BB will offer trade in bonuses for the regular PS4. Hoping to get at least $125-$150.

I don't want to trade in my PS4 too early and then be without a console during Thanksgiving weekend.....lol. So, I'm not sure if I'll wait for any BF Pro deals.

but it will depend on the trade in deals for the PS4 and when they are offered.

and if I get the Pro at launch, I'll probably just get that first and wait for a good deal on a 4K tv ( hopefully around BF ). The good thing about the Pro is that it will offer me as a 1080p tv owner some tangible benefits. And maybe the BF 4K tv deals will throw in a 4K player, too. ;)

Do you usually get deals which combine the trade-in of the old console with the purchase of the new console? Those are the deals I find to be the best here but don't know if it's common in US.

usually, Gamestop and BB offer some kind of trade in "bonus" around the launch of a new console.

Like BB will offer a $25 or $50 bonus credit coupon that you can use towards the new console, on top of the regular trade in amount for the old console.

Or Gamestop will offer slightly higher trade in amounts during the launch period for the new console.

Oh right, sounds good.

I had a moment of weakness yesterday when I convinced myself to get Pro or X1S for 4K media but then managed to set up my 2nd TV properly and realised it was better direct on TV. Plus I don't really need a 4K player in the bedroom as I watch in the lounge when I want to see top quality.

well, since you already have an X1 ( actually you have 2 right? ), then getting the Pro would at least let you enjoy PS4 games. ;)

I play PS4 exclusives at my friend's who lives next door (and he plays Xbox at mine). Quite a fun arrangement. Been doing that since the last few years of last gen. But I was considering getting the Neo anyway (before it became the Pro) for 4K media until MS also announced new consoles which I can use to just replace my old ones.

well, that's a convenient arrangement. :yay:

Anyways, anyone else download 4.0? I did and so far Ive made two folders. One for Retail Games and the other for Remasters. On the PS3, I divided stuff by genre so I might do that for the PS+ offerings.

One thing I dont like is that all the games show up on a horizontal plan. I was hoping for a grid format

Not convenient enough lol, we need a 3rd friend to buy all the Nintendo consoles. :woot:

hah!!

just downloaded it.

played around with the folders a bit. created one called Utilities for the Media Player and Web Browser. created one called Physical Games for all my disc based games. and one called Digital Games for all my digital stuff (duh). might create a Demo folder for my demos.

overall, I like the Folders. too bad there doesn't seem to be a way to arrange the folders in your desired order. seems like the newest one you create always goes to the left. Might have to start all over to create the folders in the order I want them.

also, still no option for custom wallpaper/theme. :(
