Don't forget, Sony wanted to keep the Pro at a certain price point. You can argue that the X1 S has one and is cheaper, but remember that the Pro's GPU is also more powerful, so their manufacturing costs may have went into that.

Sony wants digital 4K movie purchases on the Pro. They just won't say it.

there's truth to both of those.

Rumor has it that Sony will launch their own 4K Blu-ray player in 2017. Could this be why it as not included in the Pro?

http://www.sonyrumors.net/2016/09/15/sony-will-launch-their-x1000es-4k-blu-ray-player-in-2017/

oh, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony withheld a 4K player in the Pro so they can push their own standalone player.

You guys realize that even when the PS3 was out Sony was producing standalone Blu-ray players, right? While gaming is a mainstream activity, it's still not nearly as popular as movie watching, so they are obviously going to have products out there for people who want 4K media who don't game. One really doesn't have anything to do with the other.

if they had Blu-Ray players out at the same time as the PS3, then why couldn't they have a 4K player in the Pro at the same time as their standalone player?

That's the question, isn't it? But the point is it makes little sense that they're trying to promote one device by gimping another device of said feature. There's no real precedent for it.

that's why it's such a headscratching decision.

the other reasoning could be to keep costs down and the price under $400, as Spideyville mentioned.

but, would it really have cost that much more to include a 4K player?

ok.

so, looks like the missing Add-on/DLC section was just a temporary bug/glitch.

now, I'm starting to see that section in the info area for games, and it's showing the Add-ons I've purchased already for that game.

Well Sony in 2016 isnt the same Sony it was 10 years ago when that launched. The company has gone through major restructuring and its gaming division is very separate from its electronics division, whereas they were more intimately tied. I can see why they'd want their electronics division to get a boost in revenue considering its floundered. With that said, it overall wouldnt make sense bc standalone 4K players already exist and the Xbox has one. Sony is late to the party and keeping it out of the PS4, only allows other companies to get larger marketshare. And keeping it out of the PS4 doesnt automatically equate to standalone Sony sales. People will get whats available, especially the much cheaper Xbox.

that happens often. Apple for example has a long history of that.

the ironic thing is that I tend to buy standalone products from Samsung, not Sony.

My current 1080p tv is Samsung, as is my Blu-Ray player. When I get a 4K tv, it will also be a Samsung, not Sony. If I need a standalone 4K player, it will also be with Samsung, not Sony.

However, if the 4K Player was built into the Pro, then I wouldn't need to buy a standalone player, and thus my 4K player would be a Sony ( assuming I got the Pro, of course ).

I'm assuming with the digital movies they'll be.labled 4K digital? Because nothing is labeled that now.. so I'm not buying ny movie until then..

On Vudu I think you see it labeled as UHD or HDX? I may be wrong, though, but I thought that was 4K. Don't know about other services.

Cool, I don't notice any movies in UHD on the PS Store.. I'm guessing we won't until the Pro.

Probably true although they would have sold more Pros with the physical player and probably sold at least the a similar amount of digital 4k films altogether across the larger base. There don't seem to be many who actively wanted them not to include a 4K player in the Pro (or are speaking up agreeing with the decision in any of the places I've looked) so only the increased cost of including the player could have been a downside, but as others have said the cost can't be that much if the weaker S can afford to include it in its lower price.

so, it looks like I may be upgrading to a 4K tv sooner than expected........lol.

for those of you who are more familiar with the tv tech side of things, how can I tell that a 4K HDR tv supports HDR10 ( which is what the S and Pro support )?

the 4K HDR tv I have my eye on is this 40" Samsung.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...h-dynamic-range-black/5133600.p?skuId=5133600

The Best Buy site lists this unit as an HDR tv. The Samsung site says it has "HDR Premium."

http://www.samsung.com/us/televisio...7-series-4k-uhd-tv-2016-model-un40ku7000fxza/

Samsung also has something called "HDR 1000" which is found in its higher end, pricier SUHD tvs.

So, now I'm confused by all these terms........lol.

Based on reviews I've read, the "HDR Premium" found in the 40" I'm looking at seems to be on the lower end of the HDR scale compared to the HDR 1000 found in the SUHD tvs.

but, would the HDR Premium still be considered HDR 10 and thus compatible with the Pro or S?

I know I'm not going to get the best picture quality or features with the 40" model I'm looking at. But the SUHDs are way too expensive and don't come in 40".

I just want to make sure that 40" "HDR Premium" tv is HDR 10 compatible and will let me experience HDR with the Pro or S.

I certainly hope I don't have to buy a pricey SUHD tv to experience HDR 10.

I would really appreciate your help on this, guys.

thanks.

I don't know if HDR premium is different or not. I thought HDR was HDR. I am not a tech kind of guy though but I have never heard HDR premium before. I did find this sit that goes into reviews for tvs though. http://www.rtings.com/. ThatTv looks to be this one http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/ku7000. Looks like it does video game while but other things not that great.

thanks for that review site. much appreciated!

Yeah sure thing I don't have a 4k tv yet and may be a few years before I get one. I want to get one but I am still trying to move out and I want like a 55-60 inch 4k tv for around 1000 and the good ones at that size still cost like 2000-4000 for the most part.

yeah. the price for those will come down in a few years.

but I'm not even considering those sizes because they are too big for my room.

but, at the 40" size, it seems the selection isn't as robust and they don't include a lot of the fancier features.

and I accept that, especially at the price point I'm willing to pay.

This may be the wrong thread but what on earth is happening with GoW? No updates, no news. It's getting a little worrying.

While those kind of sizes are 2 big for my room to witch is part of why I am probly going to want lol. I have a 37 inch 720p upscale 1080p tv sinces 07. I want to upgrade but I don't want to upgrade just pitchure but size to. The crazy thing is that Tv that you had in that link cost about the same has what I paid for my 37 inch tv 9 years ago and it is 4k compared to my 720 but that is tech for you lol. Tech cost so much at first and then goes down. Now there are Tv's similer to what I have that cost 250-300 where it was 700 when I got the tv years ago.

It has only been a few months and we don't have any news about Spider-Man either really sinces then. Its not like TLG where you didn't see any thing from like 2011-14 lol. Also it sounds like GOW is still a long way away like maybe 2018. If that is true we may not see any thing in till next year.

So while I was saying I may want a while and try to get a 55-60 inch 4k tv for around a 1000 when prices go down I just saw this tv that is 49 inch and 1100. http://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/samsung/ks8000

Maybe I will get this tv not sure. That would still be a solid 12 inches bigger then the tv I have right now and it is only 100 more then the 1000 I was saying and with holidays coming up maybe it will get cheaper in a few months. It looks to be a solid tv that is balanced when it comes to how while it does like video games, movies etc. The only thing is it may be slightly to big for my room and the current 37 inch tv I currently have on a old computer stand and it already covers the whole stand from end to end.

While I like Samsung.. I just decided to go LG due to my sound system and basically everything I own being able to sync up with it in a click of a button. Also I got the same quality TV for 200 less.

Keep in mind that it's easy to fall for bells and whistles with 4K.. our eyes can legit only see so much, lol
