This threads devoted to talking about Superman IV. Anything you liked or disliked. Plus this is a great place to talk about all the deleted material, like Nuclear Man One, which hopefully we'll see on the DVD.

I can't help but feel for Christopher Reeve. His intentions were good. But in the end, didn't play out.

Blame it on Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus. They should be condemned to the seventh level of Hades for what they did. Reeve was looking to extend the series and breath fresh life into it...they were looking for a follow-up hit to Iron Eagle.

I also appreciate his attempts to bring a more serious idea into the Superman canon with Supes tackling the nuclear warfare issue; it could have made for a fascinating film, but the film was killed by a non-existant budget. I appreciate it that he stuck with the series to the bitter end, even though he must have been kicking himself in the ass off camera the whole time with 3 and 4.

The fights between Superman and Nuclear Man, though cheap and shoddy, are among my guiltiest guilty pleasures.

I agree, there are some good lines that Supes gives, but the story goes no where. Supes intervening in human affairs is a good idea, and one as serious as the nuclear arms race makes it interesting, yet the plot was second to Luthor making Nuclear man, a cheap device I may add.

Still I love the line Supes gives at the very end, the last line by Reeves as Supes, "See you in twenty Luthor", and 20 years later, after Reeves said that (the movie was filmed in 1986, released in 1987) Superman Returns is released.

Personally, the film was bad but it reminds me of my childhood so I like it for sentimental reasons.

You know, I like it better than Superman Returns. So there's that...

It's almost not fair to pick on Supes IV - it had the budget cut in half at the last minute, meaning the crew had to try and create the same ammount of effects with half the cash. If they knew earlie aboutthe budget cut, they could have changed the script and had half the effects, thereby having less action but better quality action when it occurs. Having said that, the effects in Lois & Clark are just as poor as Superman IV, and that's a TV show.

And then, of course, the movie was rushed out without even being finished-! So you have lame special effects that are not even finished.

Add to this, the movie is gutted, like Daredevil, a 2 hour movie whittled down to 90 minutes, and it stands no chance.

I don't believe any movie would stand up to these huge setbacks. Superman IV is half a movie.

Just found this picture, must be a deleted shot - Suprman never punches Nuclear Man, does he?

^uh.. dude, how can you not remember Superman fighting Nuclear Man?? yes he did punch him and kick him and all that ****.
and Nuclear Man scratch'd Superman's back or something, which made him ill. and he lost his cape at the foot of the statue of liberty. and lois found the cape and left it at Clark kent's doorstep, and somehow it re-energizes Superman to comeback and fight another day.

and aside from all that ****, it had the worst special effects of all superman movies. and Nuclear Man just suck'd. with his bad 80's hair and wrestler look. plus Christopher Reeve was looking way too old and fat.

He gives him one hell of a knee strike to the snout, though. One of my all time favorites...in any movie.

LOL, it's so awkward and fake, though.

The Nuclear Man/Superman fight is possibly the least convincing in any so-called 'professional' movie....it's like amateur hour. Did they even have choreographers?

Huh? How the hell was Chris Reeve looking old and fat?? Did you watch the same movie I did?

Upon watching it and seeing the photo of Superman above, I believe the scene appeared disjointed because part of the fight was trimmed and the cut was bad. I personally liked the simplicity of the fight and just like the rest of the movie, editing and FX work could help it. But then again, what's there is there, sadly.

The editing messes up the fight, sure, but the actual footage itself is awful. It's just so laboured, so unconvincing. I mean, I'm not asking for Casshern action from a 1987 release, but IV was seven years after Superman II, and the action in that film blows away Superman IV.

Look at the scene where Nuclear Man 'pounds' Superman into a hole. Reeve seems to be standing on a platform, which he slips off momentarily and then corrects himself. Woeful.

.....and then I saw this...

In the Reev interview, he says that Superman speaks Chinese in the film. Was that cut?

Probably a cut shot.

Yeah, from the Great Wall of China scene. Of course, you can't mention that scene without pouring scorn on the terrible 'Great Wall of China-vision' sequence.

I thought it had some good scenes but overall it was poorly developed and it has really bad special effects on 90% of the movie. But it still is one of my guilty pleasures.

Reeve was only like 34/35 when he made that film. He hardly looked old or fat, if anything he was closer to Superman's true age than he had been in the beginning. I thought Reeve's physique looked pretty much the same throughout all four films, keeping in mind that he was never as large as a Schwarzenegger.
