I mean the public figure optimism Captain IS part of Ultimate Steve, but only on the television and public events. Steve is the ultimate black Ops soldier whom you send into a camp full of terrorists and Steve simply kills them all. :) Thats why he's the ultimate badass.

don't compare Cap to Superman... They are way different. They may have used to be alike in a lot of ways during different eras in comics, but Marvel has made Steve Rogers a different person. Supes is a hopeful, optimistic and Cap, after seeing what his government is capable of, has become something of a cynic I'm afraid.

The two don't compare!

How is Captain America cynical? He still works for the government. He disagrees with them and at times finds himself at odds with them, but he obviously must believe in what the US is all about, even if the government fails to uphold those ideals, or he wouldn't actually agree to represent the US by wearing its flag anymore. He's still very optimistic. Perhaps a bit more of a realist than Superman is, since he will kill if he feels there's no other choice and he'll organize covert ops and such, but he's first and foremost a very idealistic person. Given his outlook and the fact that he inspires everyone in his universe more than anyone else, I'd say the comparison to Supes is quite appropriate.

Seconded.

Yeah, when they were discussing how they were going to reboot Superman Moore told them that throwing out all the previous stories and continuity would alienate the fans of that material because it in essence told them that those stories were a waste of their time. That by throwing out the baby with the bathwater those supporters would be lost because the many many years of stories they invested themselves into were to be annulled. These comments were not made public at the time but have since been revealed.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

He's inspiring because of how great of a tactician he is. Not because of moral boyscout speeches.

Cap's been portrayed as extremely pure and noble over the years. They even had a mini series where Magneto used a device that was supposed to detect prejudice in people on Cap and it detected nothing. Cap can pick up Thor's hammer. Cap is every bit as honorable and pure as Superman. That doesn't mean he has the exact same standards and policies as Superman. An example: Superman's code against killing. Although Superman has that code for himself and pledges to renounce his powers should he break it, he does not expect others to have the same code. In fact he (as Superboy) acted as Star Boy's defense attorney in his trial because he felt people who aren't invulnerable may have to use lethal force to defend themselves.

What issue of what book would that be from? Do you know?

What's the general census on Starlin's work on "DC Comics Presents" in the 80s?

I've always had mixed feelings about Starlin because while a lot of what he does is great, he also loves death and pushes his own characters to obnoxious levels-they're a little Mary Sue-ish to me. But his DCCP work was great and the Superman/Spectre issue earned praise from Jerry Siegel who created both characters. There's no better recommendation than that!

Starlin is great at DC. He did Death In the Family as well. His Superman is tops!

My opinion on him is similar and I think his DCCP work was very good and is overlooked these days. No one mentions it.

"Death In The Family" is quite flawed but I have a soft spot for it. (But I didn't like Batman calling Superman "Kent", just to stay on topic ;) What's even more amazing is "The Cult", also not a perfect work by any means, but it's a cute DKR rip-off which also No Man's Land, Knightfall and Officer Down in one.

I'm not as familiar with Starlin's work at DC, but Thanos is the ultimate Mary Sue. Starlin went so far as to retcon various losses Thanos accrued over the years when he got to write him again--a couple times, in fact. I know for sure that a great story from Thor vol. 2 where Thanos concocted a plan to rule the universe with various mystical and cosmic artifacts was retconned to be a clone of Thanos solely because he lost at the end.

Now you have to have the Watcher there to to verify that he lost and it wasn't a clone or alternate universe version, or robot, if you want him to lose. Which is why Squirrel Girl totally kicked his ass. :o

Heh, yeah, I get the feeling Dan Slott will find some way to write a new short story re-retconning that loss back into continuity whenever Starlin retcons it out. It'll be a vicious cycle, only hilarious. :D

Heh, I could totally see Starlin saying that The Watcher was actually Thanos in disguise.

Thanos implanted a subliminal message in the Watcher's mind when he had the Infinity Gauntlet so he could warp perceptions about himself and keep people's expectations low, thus giving himself an enormous advantage when he reveals his true power! "Pff, Thanos? He got his ass kicked by Squirrel Girl." (Thanos roasts that person alive by looking at him hard.)[/Starlin]

Which is why Squirrel Girl is :awesome:

How long is Lex Luthor going to be the star of “Action Comics?” For a while yet. The Lex Luthor story really pays off in epic ways, Sattler said, adding that so long as Cornell is writing “Action,” it is a comic definitely worth picking up.

Lois Lane will start to play a larger role in Paul Cornell and Pete Woods’ “Action Comics.”

Death in the Family is a masterpiece, but I agree, in that it is flawed in small ways.

Also, what did you think of Officer Down?
