BvS The Official Zack Snyder Directs Everything Thread - Part 2

After this film, I believe that Zack Snyder is overrated as a visual director.

He did do a good job with 300, a very good job, but that was a long time. Man of Steel was beautiful, but they abandoned that approach for this video game approach they adopted in the sequel.

The issue with Snyder is that he is overall awful, "F-grade" as weezerspider put it, with story, character, tone, and so on. However he is B-grade or C-grade with visuals. It's his strongest attribute, and thus people describe Snyder as a "visual director" which leads to the perception that he is an elite talent for visuals.

I suggest that another reason Snyder is overrated is that the Marvel films, his competition, have predominantly weak and uninspiring visuals.

Are they better movies, though?

Some of them. It's well known on this forum that I'm not Marvel fan #1. I find them flawed and am disappointed in most Marvel comic book movies. I think I like MoS more than *all* the MCU films, but if BvS were a Marvel film I'd definitely rank it in the lower half.

I'll say that the Marvel films are ... superior as commercial products. They're better at creating value for shareholders.

Or at least a good time at the movies....which, to be fair, a lot of people want.

The longer this is allowed to continue, it becomes less and less likely that anyone note-worthy will want to be associated.

This is pretty much why Snyder got the job in the first place, from what I've been hearing. Lots of good directors turned down MoS.

Sadly, I think Superman was already considered a tainted brand prior to Snyder getting his hands on it. And Snyder is damaging the brand even further.

Glad or not glad it didn't end up with Michael Bay?

Yeah I believe 6 or 7 directors turned it down before Snyder took it. Everyone from Duncan Jones to Matt Reeves

Duncan Jones, Matt Reeves, Ben Affleck, Darren Aronofsky are all said to have been in the mix.

Michael Bay or Zack Snyder ... Yeah, that's a Catch 22. :funny:

Bay would have made a movie that's just as annoying as Zack Snyder's BvS.

I gotta respect when a smaller director gets the opportunity of making millions directing Superman and still turns it down.

only one out of that list i would want is Matt reeves

duncan jones take on superman was terrible LOL

Reeves would have rocked, but it's ok he made amazing Apes film.

If he's the Planet of the Apes director, yeah....that's the kind of skill with characterization that these movies could have benefited greatly from.

I love Matt Reeves.

Was hoping WB would pick him up for something.

They were both excellent. I haven't seen the second one in quite some time, I really need to rewatch it soon.

Maybe Serkis could have acted for a later-to-be-mocapped Superman too...at least give him some character.

Sorry, that was mean. :cwink:

I doubt that any director will be willing to take his place now, especially given the fan expectations, the level of scrutiny done for DC movies by critics, the commercial expectations by Studio execs. and they will have to work under Snyder who is still the producer for all DC movies.

It would have to be someone passionate about DC in general. The only person I can think of who has the flack to get his way is Miller.

I am sure after the bsahing BvS got by Critics and fans alike, Sucide Squad director David Ayer and WW director Patty Jenkins must be feeling pressure, the kind of pressure no Marvel movie director has to face.

I truly feel sorry for them now.
