So what exactly was the Phantom Zone in the movie? It seemed that it was actual sub-space, that the Kryptonians could put prisoners into, and pull them back out of at will. So were Zod's soldiers pulled back into the zone in the battle of Metropolis, or was it a staright up singularity that they were pulled into and destroyed?

Pretty sure they were pulled back into the Zone.

thats my understanding of it, right now the Phantom Zone has the remaining Kryptonians (Faora and Jax-Ur included) with Col.Hardy and Emil Hamilton.

We may.....MAY....see them again in future films if that is where they are.

But before they would have Black Zero to protect them from the elements? Wouldn't it just be vacuum for them now or something?

Also Hardy and Hamilton were in the plane that crashed and exploded. So their odds of survival seem kind of low at that. Unless Faora or the other kryptonians got them out in time for some odd reason.

The explosion would have killed the humans like Hardy and Hamilton. It wouldn't have necessarily killed the Kryptonians but it would have sent them into The Phantom Zone.

That is my thought as well. Otherwise, Hardy's last words wouldn't make much sense. It also adds more depth to them if the Kryptonians are trapped while he and Hamilton die in the crash because he is getting a good heroic death and denying the same to Faora.

Also, there is a vial of Superman's blood in the Phantom Zone. The fact that this plot detail is considered no big deal and not even worth mentioning again is shocking to me.

the black hole would have sucked up the effect of the explosion, Hardy might not have survived since he was literally right in front of it, but Hamilton was at the back of the plane so he could have survived.

In terms of the Black Zero protected them and what not, I think they said it was only a transport ship that took them into the Zone and then later out, we dont know how this new Phantom Zone is on the inside, it could have a land mass like in the original movies and tv shows (shown in Supergirl & Smallville) or it could just be a parallel reality where its occupants can see and hear but not affect anything (hence the name "PHANTOM" Zone).

Time will tell I guess :S

I don't think there was ever a possible way for it to be brought up, but it most certainly could be brought up in the sequel. Might even be a good way to use Bizarro.

He could have, but I don't think Hamilton did survive, lol.

The way they presented the PZ in the movie reminded me a bit of Marvel's Negative Zone.

The script giving Hardy that line back to Faora "a good death is its own reward" as they were about to collide hinted that they all DIED.

They're gonna want other villains for future sequels, if this wasn't the case Zod would still be around.

Why bother making it seem that they all die when they create a portal to The Phantom Zone?

It could be very similar to how Nolan handled the League of Shadows, Ra's the leader was killed, but the League survived. In this, Zod dies, but the few Kryptonians could have survived in the Phantom Zone. And that could set up one of the sequels....hell I can kinda figure out a twisted idea of how that would work lol.

Faora was pretty well hinted by many to be Zod's wife in Man Of Steel, lets go with the idea that she was and that she's pregnant, has the kid while in the Zone, Jax-Ur experiments on it.....they end up creating DOOMSDAY out of Zod's child....having a really twisted....Smallville based origin for the monster that kills Superman, now with a purpose aside from just being a killing machine.

I highly doubt that will ever happen but it's just a thought lol

I think the hint can go the other way as well that only the heroic humans died. When planning the whole thing, Superman and Lois mentioned that the singularity would "send them back". Given how much it pained Supes to kill Zod in desperation, I highly doubt he would actively plan to kill all the Kryptonians using the Phantom Drive. Rather, I believe Hardy's line had more bite and edge to it. He was telling Faora that he was getting a good death as a soldier fighting for his people and that he was at peace with his sacrifice while implying that she neither deserved or would be getting the same and instead was being sent back to the Phantom Zone for eternity as the criminal she was.
