The Punisher 1989 Director's Cut Screening!

I would love to go to this. I'd like to know what is different about the director's cut compared to the American DVD release. I had a bootleg of the movie on VHS before it was released on video way back in 1989 and it had a lot of scenes that were good, but were cut out of the final release. I'd also like to see the original opening where we meet a young Frank Castle and Sam playing the hooker.

From what I know there's a bit more violence, no monologues and the naked meditation is about 2 seconds long.

I have the Unrated Version and a workprint. The workprint quality is not very good since it was ripped from a VHS, but it's still watchable.

Does Dolph wear the body armor with a skull painted on it like in the comic adoption?

No. He dresses like Arnie in the Terminator, except not as cool. Search Punisher 1989 on google to see a pic of him, since we can't hotlink here anymore. However, you already knew that, didn't you?

I agree, the scene where the Dolph Punisher turns down the body armor still makes me cringe. But it had awesome fight choreography. The guy who directed it was a first time director who was one of Hollywoods best action film editors.

In marvel's graphic novel adoption of the '89 movie, he sprayed the skull on a kevlar vest. I heard rumers of it possibly getting on film, but hey... we got what we got back then. Marvel didn't have the best live-action adoptions pre-Blade.

That 89 film is pretty much garrbage thats been rotting for years in the marvel dumpster that they never want you to see.

This movie isn't as bad as people make it out to be, its tied with the Jane version in my opinion, if Frank would have had the Skull shirt and a better actor playing him, People would be singing a very different tune.

Agreed its not that bad. Its a very 80s type movie, the kind Arnie made but its not bad. Some cheesey lines but no more than jane version. The fact that alot of pre punisher frank was cut from the movie didn't really help.

The movie suffered because of a low budget (script got butchered) and most movie studios pre-spiderman attitude to comic book movies (lack of belief they can be successful or liked by anyone other than comic fans.)

most people didnt like the very first punisher film
but trust me when i say that itll be a collector's item to own a vcd/dvd of it

its a classic now
its like owning a DVD set of adam west's complete batman series

I have a bootleg of it on VHS before it got chopped up. I have the official VHS and I have it on DVD. It's not as bad as some make it out to be, but it's a stereotypical 80's action movie.

The original Opening is on youtube.

I think Dolph did some good acting in it, atleast for the 80's. Should of kept it in the release.

I have the normal dvd version of the 89 cut. I'd like to see/own the directors cut. I just bought the 04 directors cut and am watching it tonight.

Does the added elements in the 89 version help it any?

This NEEDS to come out on DVD.

Do you guys know that the deleted scenes from the 1989 movie are on youtube? Like when Frank and his partner are on a steakout? Also the original ending.

I saw the original ending on YouTube. Its much darker and I can see why they didn't use it.

Does it make it a better film?

I still have some affection for it.

As I recall-- I picked up a copy of the 1989`s script before watching it. I liked the script, in a typical revenge movie kinda way. I think he even paints the skull at some point. But ironiclly the scenes i liked the most weren`t in the movie. There was a lot more before the gangster was relesed from the court.

If you read the comic adaptation, it actually has quite a few of the missing scenes in it too. And yeah, he paints the skull onto his kevlar before the final showdown with the yakuza in it. But they scrapped that in the movie as he refuses to kevlar.

ykno I was talking about P:WZ with some people yesterday at my band's show and a lot of people I talked to HATED the 04 one but actually liked the 89 one...many of them didnt even know a new Punisher was out

The original Opening is on youtube.
Is it me or was the score unfinished on that, and they stle the Lethal Weapon score, slowed it dwn and slapped it on some very Lethal Weapon like scenes?!......

The bootleg copy I have on VHS has music from Lethal Weapon and Full Metal Jacket as the score.
