DanielR who was one of the first people to report BVS wasn’t good, and saw an early cut of Suicide Squad(he has access to test screenings)before it was edited into the film we know now accidentally broke the Venom embargo earlier than he was supposed to by tweeting his reaction to Venom today before quickly deleting it but luckily someone already screencapped it.

Next week will be a mess.

- Reviews/RT score.
- The excuses.
- The meldowns.
- Box office (Venom vs. A Star Is Born).

Brace yourselves!

I think most people looking forward to Venom have been doing it for months.

If Venom underperforms, than it looks it’s like it’s post credit sequence will join the ranks of Masters Of The Universe & Green Lantern in being something that teases a sequel that will never happen.

Even if Venom does open decently, I just can’t see it having boc office legs without strong word-of-mouth/reviews(which is looking more and more likely it won’t get). It might be a BvS situation in which it has a decent opening weekend but it suffers enough of a steep box office decline in its subsequent weekends that’s it’s still overall considered a failure.

I wonder what the aftermath will be if Venom flops. Does morbius/Silver and Black still get made? Does Sony sell the rights back in full to Marvel? I feel if Venom flops its a good indication that you know audiences dont want a spiderverse without spider-man and maybe Sony should hang up the coat

An entirely expected comparison. As pretty much everyone has been saying, this definitely feels (early) 2000s.

I just realized we’re on Page 45. Part of the shake-up, eh?

Guys by the way here’s a reminder: The social media embargo will break tommorow after the Venom premiere. Expect some positive reactions from normal non-critics audiences mixed in with a lot of critic reactions(which will be mostly very mixed-leaning-towards negative).

And oh, tommorow Colider will have a new interview with Simon Kinberg. I expect Kinberg will downplay the significance of the Dark Phoenix delays/reshoots as part of the PR spin. It’s a Q &A and Frosty will be picking questions from twitter.

I can't wait for certain 2-3 apologists in the venom forum to go the way of the fan4stic defenders back in 2015. People need to understand that when something looks bad being apprehensive towards it DOESNT equal fanboyism.

Who are these people?

SM17 and the other guy named imhsgobwho or something like that. SM17 specifically is exactly the same as those fan4stic defenders. A studio apologist who doesn't care about the characters and only supports something based on the company releasing it.

I've never heard of these people before. But the Venom forum doesn't seem to have separate threads (eg a positivity or negativity thread) to talk about things like Fant4stic had. Seems like Fant4stic had more defenders. There were certainly more than 2 or 3. They all disappeared... like turds in the wind. :o

There is a positivity thread though. I started it because I was sick of people taking swipes at anyone criticising the movie. Though apparently that wasn't good enough for them. When I brought how it would have been a shame not to have been able to follow the Fant4stic production like we did they suggested we could have simply not talked about it. lol

That door goes both ways. People who have no interest in the Venom movie take constant swipes at the more positive posters, too. Let's call a spade a spade.

The Venom subforum has a positivity thread.

These threads are like the kiss of death. BvS positivity thread, Justice League, Fant4stic, Dark Phoenix, etc.

That's fair. Though I had seen that more recently tbh. From what I saw up until then things were a lot more civil in those threads apart from a couple of people frustrated more people weren't liking what they saw.

Though as I was trying to point out is that I think it would have been a great shame if fans on this site couldn't follow a production for a IP they loved but lamented how it's being adapted. Though sadly that often devolve into bickering.

I haven't been sure what to make of Venom. It seemed like it would annoy people like us, but might be a hit with the more casual viewers, and I thought it might be a decent movie all around.

But now that the embargo has been pushed to Friday and early reactions are indicating it might be painfully bad, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a complete mess all around.

... now I'm looking forward to what are likely to be amusingly snarky reviews.:D

Early predictions have A Star is Born expected to make about $30 million and Venom to make about $65 million.

That should make it quite a coup if A Star is Born beats it.

I don't think A Star is Born will. If Venom loses, I would be shocked. A Star is Born is not the type of film geared toward openings at like 60+. It's built to have legs and staying power.

Yeah, but with a 95% on RT and a lot of buzz, I can see ASIB over-performing and getting into the 40's or higher, and if the reviews for Venom are as bad as some of us are expecting, it could drop.

It would be unlikely, but that's what makes the possibility all the more fun.:D

It's getting a lot of buzz and will get solid word of mouth, but I don't see that translating to a 60+ OW for it. I am seeing somewhere around 40 OW with potentially lower than 50% drops week to week. That's closer to how a movie like that tends to perform.

But what about Venom? I don't think it's a lock for 60.

I'm not so sure about that. This is probably going to come off as pretty... what's the word?... elitist, but I think that we as comic book fans are a bit stricter with our assessments. Because not only are we looking at it through the lens of a general movie, but also a comic book adaptation. Simply put, a lot of comic book movies are bad comic book movies because they are bad movies. It's rare that these succeed in terms of film-making and are more harshly viewed by comic book fans. Only the first two X-Men movies come to mind. I don't know- maybe I'm just rambling and way off base here.

Isn't it still Tuesday? Or is Friday the social media embargo? I thought that was tonight.
