The problem fans had with Johnson's treatment of Luke had much more to do with his rejection of the Jedi and hermit behavior than it did his death. If Mr. Skywalker had immediately signed up for Rey's quest and died while gutting Kylo Ren fans would have been tickled pink. I also wouldn't blame the disappointment of Solo - which featured a recasting of one of fiction's most iconic characters, was a prequel, came 6 months after TLJ and was overshadowed by Infinity War - on the fans rejecting the prior wildly successful film.
I don't want to see characters die, but it's inevitable in order for the whole thing not to feel silly, like the comics often do. Spit happens. People have kids, get older, retire and yes, die. I would prefer Evans stick around, but if he decides to hang up the Shield I don't want the MCU to issue a casting call for a twenty something up and comer to portray Steve Rogers. Let him rest in peace.
