Looks like Disney's conference call is scheduled for November 8. We might get a closing date then, but if we don't get an actual date then. We're almost certain to get more information and a narrower window on the closing date.

I really hope we get something on the 8th. If not an actual date, I guess I would be fine with a window. Something a little more substantial. Tangible. Definitive. We got the news a while ago that it would be January 1st, but that turned out to be inaccurate, in that they would only be "ready to close", so I'm definitely looking forward to hearing something from Iger and co.

The audio of the conference call will be livestreamed like the others, right?

yep.

Disney’s Fiscal Full Year and Q4 2018 Earnings Results Webcast - The Walt Disney Company

Its curious that the EU delayed their deadline of approval to just 2 days before the conference call. Probably just a coincidence but my guess is Disney wants EU approval confirmed by the end of this fiscal year so it looks good on their financial reports. And it keeps the merger moving forward in a timely manner.

I blame JUMANJI. They have a longer leash now.

Yeah, that movie ended up being an explicably huge hit for them. Between it's over performance and now Venom's over performance, their leash seems to be getting longer by the day.

I think there are some pluses and minus as far as Marvel getting the Fox characters versus Sony (let's assume that they do lose Spider-Man). On one hand, I do think that Fox had the more valuable pieces for the MCU as a whole. Mutants, some big villains (Doom, Galactus, Kang, etc.), the Fantastic Four, and a larger base of supporting characters, worlds, and alien species to interact with. Except for Spider-Man himself, what Sony has is more easily replaceable with other characters in the MCU. I love Norman Osborn as much as the next person, but Marvel isn't exactly lacking in evil, rich industrialists with dark secrets. Fox over Sony is definitely a net boon for the Avengers franchise and the MCU as a whole.

On the other hand, I am personally more of a fan of Spider-Man than anybody Fox has, so from that perspective I would rather Marvel have Spider-Man. Also, Fox for its faults and misfires, has made much better films overall than Sony has. I really liked Deadpool, and Logan, and most (not all) of the X-Men movies. Sony hasn't made a good CBM since Spider-Man 2 (not counting HC which Marvel made for them).

Fox has ruined the Fantastic Four several times already so the FF have to return home somehow and this deal is just the best & fastest way for them go back short of Fox just selling the rights back in exchange for something(which they never would’ve done). I prefer that Marvel gets full access to the Fox characters over them getting full rights to Spidey. And the main X-Men franchise kind of feels like it’s run it’s course and needs a fresh spin on it to revitalize it. I thought of Deadpool and Logan’s as more exceptions rather than the rule and from my view they’ve been generally pretty hit-or-miss.

I like Spidey a lot but I think the “wow!” factor of having Spidey in the MCU has worn off by now — we’ve seen it already, but we’ve never seen the MCU version of the Mutants and The First Family. In an ideal world, Marvel would get full access to all their characters but it I had to choose between Marvel getting full access FF and X-Men or Spider-Man’s continued involvement with the MCU, I’d rather they get the Fox characters back home where they belong the most(especially Fantastic Four).

No doubt Fox has messed up Fantastic Four. They have never been lower as a franchise and a brand than they are now. But on a personal level, I care far, far more about Spider-Man than I do about them.

Why are people asking about Avengers and Guardians? We want to know about Fantastic Four and X-Men in the MCU!
I know we all want xmen and F4 back. But as someone who never read any comicbook, the mcu made me fall in love with these characters and drew me into this exciting world. So yes, I care about gotg and the avengers they have a special place in my heart. the mcu is what it is today thanks to these characters.

I don't know exactly how it will play out, but my gut feeling is that Sony won't make any actual Peter Parker Spider-man films without coordinating with Marvel.

I would love for that to be the case but I think once Sony gets more hits under their belt they’re going to terminate the deal.

Speak for yourself. There is definitely not "we". Avengers is way more hyped and imminent so i'm pretty sure myself and plenty of others want to know more about that.

I've come around to thinking a short term extension of the Spidey deal makes sense for both parties. Sony needs more time to figure out if the Venomverse is viable. Morbius and the other spin offs are no sure thing, and the Venom sequel could disappoint given the poor critical response to the first. There's no need to cram Peter into the series before they have at least two big films.

And while Marvel Studios has lots on their plate going forward, I'm sure Feige and company would rather they close out the trilogy. What about a two film deal, with a Marvel Studios produced trilogy series finale from Sony followed by Disney's Spidey and his Amazing Friends introducing Iceman and Firestar for the MCU X-Men?

I doubt they’ll pull Holland away. Hopefully he gets to join the mutants

Man I'd love to see Holland's Spider-Man meet Wolverine and the X-Men..

Johnny Storm, too. He has to meet Johnny.

Venom crossed half a billion this weekend with China and Japan still to come. Yea Sony ain't extending that Marvel deal. Not when Venom Vs Spider-Man has billion dollar potential.

I don't see that decision playing well for them in the long run.

I didn’t realise it hadn’t opened there yet. Bloody hell. The final WW number is going to be big.

I can’t believe it: A freakin’ Venom movie is going to make more money than the first Justice League film. I don’t know whether to be embarrassed as a DC fan or be worried as a Marvel fan about the future of Spider-Man in the MCU.

On the bright side EU approval should be confirmed in 9 days.

Im sorry, but what billion dollar potential?
Venom wont get there by himself. Sure, it exceeded expectations, but the critics and a lot fans buried it and i dont think a sequel has strong foundations to build upon.
Homecoming was successful but didnt get close to 1 bil. That shows how much damage sony did to the property. Damage that marvel tried very hard to fix.
Now we love holland in the mcu. Im sure feige has a way to prevent him from being in a sony movie unrelated to mcu.
But still, imagine the backlash if they took spiderman, holland or not, from mcu.
How would that, combined with a shaky groundwork set by venom result in a billion dollar picture? And its made by the people who thought aunt may solo film could work?
I just dont see it happening.
What i do see is a complete and total trainwreck.

I knew a Venom film had this kind of potential, even more. The character was huge from the beginning and always showed more traction in the mainstream over some established characters. He was basically the 90's/early 2000's version of Deadpool in that way. What's surprising is the way the film has achieved it's success. I assumed it's great potential needed to be tied to Spider-Man and get favorable reviews. Apparently Venom is even more popular then I thought. A major superstar IP

If Sony is smart and learn from their mistakes they could build on this.

If a standalone venom film on its own can make half a billion and homecoming made $880 million. Think how much Venom 2 will make with Spider-Man involved. Obviously there's still a few factors here to consider. When looking at a Venom vs Spider-Man film potential's box office.

1. Who is playing Spider-Man? If its Tom Holland they already have an established fan base.

2. If its a new spider-man like you say there's a lot of risk involved in recasting the role for a 4th time.

3. MCU fan backlash. Dont underestimate an angry fan base. All tho this didn't seem to effect Venom at all.
