As Disney readies to release "Oz, the Great and Powerful," Warner Horizon Television wants to take a different kind of trip to the Emerald City. Warner Horizon has picked up "Red Brick Road," from producers Roy Lee and Adrian Askarieh, which takes a more sci-fi approach to L. Frank Baum's tale.
Plot details of the series are being kept under wraps, but the project, created by artist Rob Prior, is described as a dark and edgy sequel to the "Wizard of Oz," with a futuristic take on characters like a robotic Tin Man.
Lee will exec produce the show with Mark Wolper through Vertigo Entertainment. Lee and Wolper set up "Bates Motel" at A&E and Universal Television, with Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin shepherding that series. John Middelton and Jeff Krelitz will serve as co-exec producers.
Askarieh will also exec produce "Red Brick Road" through his Prime Universe shingle. He and Lee also are developing the film "Leonardo da Vinci and the Soldiers of Forever" at Warner Bros. Story, which turns the Italian inventor-designer into an action hero, is based on Askarieh's original idea.
Producer has several videogame adaptations in development, including a reboot of "Hitman" at Fox with Paul Walker set to star and bigscreen takes of games "Deus Ex" and "Just Cause." Lee is also onboard "Deus Ex," set up at CBS Films.
Warner Horizon TV's current series include "Rizzoli & Isles" and "Dallas" for TNT, "Pretty Little Liars" and "The Lying Game" for ABC Family, NBC's "The Voice" and ABC's "The Bachelor."
