Captain Marvel The Rotten Tomatoes/Critic's Reaction Thread

That’s not what I said.
Sorry, didn’t mean to misrepresent. Would “didn’t care for it” be more accurate? I was just trying to make the point that you seemed to have a highly contrasting opinion from the particular critics I was referring to. As did others.

I wonder how people would feel about this movie if Endgame wasn't a month away. Would they still be giving it as much leeway? I haven't seen the movie yet, just wondering. From what I hear, it's definitely not Marvel's Wonder Woman like I was hoping . I'll see for myself on Sunday morning.

I think people just had too much high expectation after IW and want "innovation" from marvel.
and CM is not and don't try to do that. imo If this was releases years ago, it would get better score and reaction from some critics.

also for female feminism angle, imo CM did much better. but that is already used card.

Also, maybe see the film for yourself before you pass judgement like that. I’ve read several very positive reviews, some from top critics. While our own jmc hated it. Opinions are funny like that.

I will be seeing it opening day if possible.

Staying in the 80's is the goal now, lol...

Critics Consensus

Packed with action, humor, and visual thrills, Captain Marvel introduces the MCU's latest hero with an origin story that makes effective use of the franchise's signature formula.

From what I have read it seems to be falling somewhere in the middle a lot giving it praise and a lot saying its kind of a by the numbers superhero flick.

Will try and get in to see it this weekend get my own take:res:

I get where Abudefduf is coming from. Being the first female lead movie in the MCU, he wanted it to get better reviews. With all hate the movie got, he wanted it to be well above average, because anything less than that wouldn't be enough to shut down the haters. I understand how he feels because I felt like this about Black Panther. A lot was riding on it and it ended up delivering beyond my wildest expectations. I wanted the same for CM, it didn't quite get there but what we got is still very good. The box office is looking very healthy and all things considered, the movie is doing better than fine.

I hope you enjoy this movie kind Sir, I love your countdown thread and you did a great job keeping us hyped. At the end of the day, what matters most is that you enjoy this.

I'm not saying Captain Marvel had to be the next Black Panther or Wonder Woman (that would be ridiculous), but it sure as heck didn't have to be the next Ant-Man & the Wasp either.

Still don't get the AM&tW hate...its so good! Low stakes, sure, but its better than the first, and better than Wonder Woman to me
BP's saving grace was its style and vision and production design and all the smaller elements that create a wonderful whole. But plot-wise? It is pretty damn basic, with an (imo) overrated villain
WW was basically just Thor and Cap mashed into an extruder and turned into a Marvel-like film that just happened to feature a classic and beloved character, in a fairly unexplored time period. Wonder Woman's cache as a character is the only thing that elevates it above "average"

So CM seems to just be lacking a hook, like BP's cultural aesthetic, and Wonder Woman's period setting and name recognition
and no, the 90's doesn't count as a period setting lol

Well, to each their own. Personally, Wonder Woman is so much more than that: Diana herself is what makes that film so strong, not because of name recognition, but because the character herself is so well-crafted. WW is (and probably always will be) my favorite superhero movie.

Preach!

Yeah hey, not trying to put anybody's love for the movie down
to me it just felt like CA: TFA with a different lead... which was a great movie, there are worse films to copy! lol
mainly, I just want people to stop hating on poor Ant-Man... this movie is in good company having a similar RT score to that

My favorite CBM (since this is a topic now) still stands as The Avengers. Before that, we had the promise of it all coming together, but when we finally saw it, for me it was movie magic. Yeah, we've seen plenty of crossover since, but that first time it happened and we saw them come together was the most special for me. I do think IW/Endgame (since I view it as 1 story) can maybe do that for me again if Endgame sticks the landing. But until then, give me The Avengers!

Based on what I'm reading in the reviews it seems like she would've been better served as being introduced somewhere else first then her story follows. Hopefully the 2nd one gets her something better ala winter soldier now that the origin stuff is out of the way.

I disagree wholeheartedly. WW was actually just telling the story in the comics so the Captain America comparison is a little trite an unimaginative of a critique. And really Thor and WW have about as much in common as Buffy and Sam Winchester do.
Ant-Man is not good films imo I prefer The Incredible Hulk because characterization is far better there and they don't make a bunch of changes to the source but anyway...

I see CM just went back down to 83. I wonder how much it will be in the end when all is said and done.

I agree it was so awesome to see it come together and from my childhood hero Joss Whedon no less. I've had those kid moments only a few times before that with X2 and the first Spider-Man.

Avengers was definitely my greatest theater experience ever, at the least
It was like a concert, people cheering and leading chants and going crazy waiting for it to start, lots of people dressed up, and everyone cheering and laughing and gasping at all the right moments... I'll never forget that night, which will always give that movie a special place in my heart

Critic's don't decide, how I feel about a movie.
And, I don't need this to be Marvel's Wonder Woman, just my Captain Marvel.

I have a feeling I'm going to like this movie, enough to watch any and all sequels. I drive back to my hometown every time a new Marvel movie comes out (7 hours away) to watch it with my Dad.

After Endgame, it's going to be sad, knowing that the original cast of the Avengers won't appear onscreen anymore. I hope that the angry white men can get a life so that we can enjoy future CM movies without the nonsense.
