If SONY didn't interfere, I believe Raimi could've created a villain at least on par with his Doc Ock.

Such a shame. The daughter subplot if expanded upon could've given Sandman the emotional anchor needed to be a genuinely sympathetic and driven foe.

Sandman's tragic tone was given merely by that little portrait being shown and the same sad music over and over.

I know. That's why said I if Venom was not present and eating screen time, Sandman would've gotten more development.

Eating screentime? Venom was on screen for a total of like,8 minutes. I'd say he was the character that got screwed over most. However,I do agree about Sandman.

Venom got what he deserved. And yes, Sandman could've been a great tragic villain, as it is, he was a fairly good one.

Actually, I think Harry should have been the great tragic villan. He was the one the audience had followed since highschool. We watched him struggle for his father's exceptence and MJ's love , only to lose both of them to Peter. He started off a decent kid in the first half of part one and decended in despair in part 2. All the while , for good or ill, Peter withheld the truth about Norman's death which lead him further to the darkside. His arch should have been the focus of tragedy to the end but with that shakey script he ended up with the short end of the stick. His story was far more appealing then Sandman's imo. However , I'm pretty sure had Raimi decided to focus Spiderman 3 with Harry as the sole villan with a more personal story between Peter/Harry/MJ and Liz Allen as love interest for harry , the studio would have put their foot down and forced Raimi's hand anyway.

There was a bit in the novel where Penny arrived at the construction site & told Marko to let it go. "They can't help me. You can stop."

I thought Sandman's portrayal was great. I didn't care about his character in the comic books.

It would have been better, but the problem was his family got one scene and then....well..vanished. The alternate scene of the finale, while not making it a huge improvement on the family angle, would help Flint's angle more than what we saw.
