The Superhero Cinematic Civil War of Tomorrow Thread - Part 62

They all do kind of look the same.

But I did really enjoy the Gotham by Gaslight, Red Son, Doom and Death of Superman movies.
Death of Superman is one of the best film interpretations of the character ever made. I love it. It is better than its comics counterpart in nearly every fashion.

Doom is fun enough but it pales in comparison to the singular classic that is Tower of Babel, which happens to be my favorite Justice League story.

Sorry, but Red Son and Gotham by Gaslight animated adaptions were utter trash that were terribly unfaithful and woefully inferior to the source materials.

Really? I thought Red Son would've been your jam, but then again, I still have yet to read the actual comics. From what I remember, I did like the voice acting with Amy Acker as Lois.

I'm still waiting for an animated adaptation of Arkham Asylum A Serious House on Serious Earth aka my favorite Batsy story.

Red Son sucks. Comic and movie.

Death of Superman is far superior. Movie, not comic. Both comics suck lol.

Absolutely. Death of Superman really was great.

I know it gave the nuts and bolts of the whole Death of/Funeral For a Friend/Reign Of Supermen stories, but I enjoyed Superman: Doomsday too.

Was gonna start defending Red Son then realized I hadn't read it in like fifteen years and didn't think going to bat for noted David Icke friend Mark Millar is ever a smart idea lol.

Yeah I loved it when I first read it too, so I get the inclination. But as I got older and encountered other takes on the “Supes raised in a different setting” concept, I started to see how A.) not-so-special that take was and B.) how Millar-y and surface-level it feels to me.

The Arkham Asylum comic would be difficult to faithful adapt to animation, because the art style is very dreamy and painterly. You would need CGI animation for it (same for Kingdom Come, if you want to be faithful to Alex Ross's art work).

Outrageous fan service?
Stopping the story dead to tell uninterrupted, repetitive backstory for a character who takes ages to die.

What makes it worse, is that do it two other times in the movie, far more elegantly. Even still, it's always hilarious that they will have someone run into a room be a like, "that person killed my family member" in their head. And then show a flashback of the incident. Then have them say it to the person to killed said family member then show us the incident again. And then when one of them eventually dies, have to show it again.

I love anime. But I also hate how all the really cool stuff has large sections where it's clearly written like the audience are dumb children. You don't need to adapt the manga panel for panel!

That does sound like Demon Slayer :funny: I'm excited, I'm going for a Dolby screening on Tuesday. It's selling like crazy over here.

Did not know Ruroni Kenshin's creator was a distributor of child porn and a pedophile.

I’m with you. I hate Red Sun comic and movie as well.

I’d take a number of alternate setting Superman stories over Red Son. (Speeding Bullets, Secret Identity…)

I watched the Gotham by Gaslight one. And… I know these adaptations aren’t copy/paste and I don’t need them to be. But it was so wildly different from the comic in terms of style, story, action, characters…

I don’t know. Maybe a more faithful adaptation would have made for a really dull movie. But the comic felt like an old school, gothic, Ripper investigation story (though admittedly it needed more suspects to make the mystery more compelling and less easy to figure out). And the Mignola art really sells it. The movie felt like a slick, mindless action film to me. It was kinda fun but it just had so little in common with the comic. I liked having new characters like Selina brought in so Bruce isn’t just brooding alone the whole time but I don’t know. I wanted it to work for me and it just didn’t.

I adore Secret Identity. My favorite elseworlds Superman comic. It does such a good job of capturing what it would actually be like if Superman actually existed in our world. I was on the verge of sobbing when I first read the ending. It really hit me emotionally.

Pretty certain he was only charged with possession of the materials. Granted, he had so much, that they had to investigate him as a maker of the ****.

The Dragon Quest original composer was big on WW2 denialism.

And I still can't help but side eye the Attack on Titan mangaka. The ending did not exactly ease my discomfort of some of the **** he did in that series.

I mean if he has it and is distributing it, I think one could safely assume.
