The Superhero Cinematic Civil War - Part 60

The X-Men and FF pre MCU certainly were more popular. I was an Avengers fan the most of the 3 growing up personally. I probably would have ranked them Avengers, FF, and then X-Men. But I def had the most X-Men content of the 3 to chew on. In the 90s, that's when they ruled the world of comics

Robert Downey playing himself in all those movies is the biggest reason the Avengers brand is where it is today, no wonder Iger and Feige were so willing to throw everything at him

And now because of that, the monkeys paw just keeps curling

I'd even say late 80's, 90's, and early 2000's they ruled the comic world
Even now the X-books are up there on the sales charts, right behind Spidey and Batman
And here on the Hype's comic thread, X-Men gets discussed regularly, whereas nobody ever really talks about the Avengers

You could definitely include the early '80s too. The Dark Phoenix Saga, God Loves, Man Kills, Days of Future Past, Wolverine's first solo book...so many classics in a short amount of time.

I’m so late to the party but:

The X-Men were THE team (and will be again) and STILL hold the best selling comic of all time in the record books. There’s no debating that.

But then the Avengers came with their damn movies and the rest was history. :sneeze:

And shout out to all of you who live in tornado prone areas. You are braver people than I am because the second I see one funnel cloud, you could just take me on to glory. That is scary as hell.

On a related note, I actually like Ferris Buehler’s girlfriend as Harley Quinn.

She was great on that show. Always thought she and Dina Meyer as Babs Gordon/Oracle were perfect casting.

They just never made the transition to film that Avengers made - that's what happens when instead of Feige you have Tom Rothman having a say and continuously slashing budgets last minute, getting extremely petty over X3 and tanking the franchise for his own revenge, and generally having no faith in CBMs (why is the dude still involved with them decades later?!). X-Men have one more shot now with the MCU transition but if they blow this then it will be very difficult to ever make the jump to their full potential.

I think if Marvel Studios could help right some of the wrongs about the Fox movies like they did with DP&W and embrace more of the out there/colorful concepts that Fox mostly avoided…… they’ll be able to do something cool, different and worthy enough of the X-Men brand.

I can appreciate the Fox films, and what the good ones tried to focus on…. But it’s time to push the boundaries on what the characters can do on the big screen.

What helped the Avengers film surpass the X-Men and FF franchises is that a team made up of superhero All Stars is a franchise made up of other franchises, and required set up films in order to reach it's full BO potential. Which worked out wonderfully for Marvel Studios when the Thor, Cap and (especially) Iron Man films were well received though it could have gone very badly. The mistake WB made with their All Star superhero team was trying to jump to the good stuff instead of setting up their franchise of franchises for success.

What concerns me about Avengers 5 & 6 is that we are not getting a New or Young(er) Avengers film to determine a post Endgame roster and set the table for the next superhero mash up film. I think that might be a mistake.

The X-Men are personal to a lot of people. I just need Cyclops to lead, for Storm to be cast correctly and soar, and the right tone to be set.

You got one job Feige.

LOL! Ice, Feige just better come correct with The Mutant Saga, or else…

Odds are he’s taking a bashing from at least a few here haha. I consider myself pretty chilled compared to most at least in terms of character choices. I don’t have particular favourites - there are about 11-14 characters with not much between them for me, which is what makes the team so great. But it needs to be top quality and be given the opportunities Avengers got.

With a naturally rotating roster Feige could reap the dividends over many related projects over many years if he delivers something that takes off like Avengers. And otherwise after X-Men and F4 the availability of unused high profile Marvel characters to support the next couple of decades gets slimmer.

Back in the 90s, definitely. But things change. The MCU completely upended the apple cart and gave the Avengers newfound popularity that blew away what things were like when we were younger.

My thinking was that WBD would eventually be swallowed up by Kabletown or spun off with NBC Universal after the end of the Reverse Morris Trust restrictions. But the Biden administration's regulatory environment, WBD's huge debt burden and the company's recently devalued linear networks are going to be an impediment to any major transaction. The Wrap says the company is looking to sell off a Polish TV network and WB video games unit before investigating the sale of a bigger piece like CNN.

The idiot should have sold the video games unit before wrecking it and while there was significant interest before regulators started taking a big interest in the industry. Now many of those studios would be viewed as very risky and it’s tough for platform holders to get involved going forward.

In other horrible WB news

They're either gutting everything and/or they're gonna start selling off different divisions.

Never thought I’d see the day when Cartoon Network was treated like this.

Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, the Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, all the Hanna Barbera reruns, not to mention Toonami…

Shame on the IIC for not respecting what they had.

First Game Informer get's shut down now sights are on Cartoon Network. Seems like corporate America is trying to take out my childhood one memory at a time :weeping:

Maaaaan, I haven’t picked up an issue in years (thus being part of the problem), but Game Informer shutting down HURTS.

My parents subbed to that, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Next Generation and PlayStation Magazine for me back in the day.
