The Superhero Cinematic Civil War: Quoth the Kraven, "Nevermore." - Part 61

DAMN D cinemascore! Man, am i glad i opted out of seeing this. especially after reading the plot summary.

Oooooo lawdy this second weekend dropoff is gonna be one for the record books too.

Is there anything more Zaslav than not releasing Batgirl because he thinks it's not good enough and then spend $200 million on a Joker sequel which gets the lowest CinemaScore for a comic book film ever?
Seems pretty on-brand for a guy like Zaslav, to be honest. Can't wait until the shareholders get tired of losing money and finally get rid of him.

Unfortunately, it might be too late and the only way out would be to sell to Universal or something. Zaslav is killing the studio.

I bet it's because the average joe wasn't expecting it to be a musical

Movies with deceptive marketing tend to score terribly on CS

Question for Hollywood as a whole. Why the hell do you keep making musicals if you’re afraid to let people know that they are musicals? I guess with Joker 2, it kinda makes sense to hide it in the marketing because you don’t know whether people are going to vibe with that. But I also keep seeing the trailers for WICKED and it’s not even clear that it’s a musical. They play one of the big songs throughout but if you aren’t familiar with the show, you might not even realize that it’s actually sung during the movie. There are no shots of people in the film actually singing (just a lot of crashing through windows and magic stuff). I’m just like… if making musicals today is such a huge risk that you feel the need to try and fool the audience into thinking these movies aren’t musicals… maybe you just shouldn’t make musicals?!

Same thing happened to that Mean Girls movie early this year, so many people were PISSED lol

Wonka was also a secret musical, but it ended up being a huge success nonetheless. Then again, that was a family film, Joker 2 is almost certainly going to be the only musical most of its target audience is subjected to this year. It's an odd moment for movie musicals right now.

I think Wicked is more clear it's a musical. At least Wicked has a reputation for being a musical to the general public, so that's easier for people to understand. It'd be like if you make a new version of Rent or Phantom of the Opera, you know what to expect. This one I agree it wasn't clear in the trailers.

Batgirl would’ve had a higher Cinemascore and opening weekend than Joker 2.

That is a real ouch.

Yeah I think generally people know that Wicked is a musical, but that’s why it’s even more baffling to me why they don’t make that clear in the trailers.

Then again, since you brought up Rent, maybe they’re subtly hiding it because they made weird choices like they did in the film adaptation of that show (e.g., having a bunch of stuff spoken rather than sung). Ughhhh I hate that adaptation so much.

Yes there is more. Like giving a third rate wrestling company $150 million a year.

Man, I know Gunn wasnt responsible for any of these movies but it CAN'T be fun for him to be going in to the office each week after each one of these DC disasters one after the other after the other. It cant feel good knowing you're the head of a studio of a brand thats completely in the toilet as far as the general audience is concerned.

I personally think one of the biggest takeaways looking back on alot of these failures is that there just wasnt any quality control. DC/WBD had no one TO work with these filmmakers and ensure there was quality control, which was the problem. Dating all the way back to the Snyder days, there was no one around to look at the dailies coming in and be like "um, no, you're not doing that, thats not going to go over well." Or be like "ok, we need to rework this part of the movie." I know, i know, we all want filmmakers to be left alone to their own devices but when you're making huge films based on IP like this, it HAS to be a collaborative process and some of these creatives needed to be told "no," when in the process of making some of these things. But it needs to come from someone who knows what they're doing and not an ignorant studio suit who has no creative bone and just thinks about money.

And this is just the latest example, nobody looked at the Joker 2 dailies and said WTF is this and there's no way we're letting Todd do this.

South Korea has the right idea with that golden egg, rotten egg, fresh egg compared to this tomato nonsense. :o

(You know it's a joke because I don't even think incels are defending this one. I haven't seen a single positive reaction at all. :o)

Yeah, I can imagine a whole ton of people doing a simultaneous WTF when that started. :D (haven’t seen, just imagining). Although it sounds like film is **** regardless of that.

I didn't think that movie would be rated so high, given how low it typically is when compared to other MCU movies.
Cinemascores are usually very generous-sounding compared to how letter grades are often used. A B/B- is not good. A D I’ve never even heard of, can’t even remember when I saw a C. This is a truly crazy reaction.

Zaslav is the worst. But to be a tiny bit fair, this movie was greenlit under the last regime. Though it was completely made under this one.
