The Superhero Cinematic Civil War: The SUMC Was In The Amazon With My Mom Studying Spiders Right Before It Died - Part 61

Why are being weird about Wicked and Beetlejuice? I'm not even talking about quality, though I know which I'd rather watch. I never brought that up. I was talking about Beetlejuice being something people grew up with and like.

My point is nostalgia sells, especially in our current environment. The #1 reason BJ 2 and Wicked made money, is because of their history. These aren't fresh new products that sold because people were excited by new concepts. It's because it was a sequel to a movie that has grown in popularity since it's release and the most popular musical of the century, outside of maybe Hamilton.

It's the same with Inside Out 2 and Moana 2. Now, Moana 2 might not beat Deadpool (I think it will with the holidays and the natural long legs of kids movies) but if the answer to the question is what are the three biggest movies of 2024 is three sequels to beloved franchises, then that's my point. People are flocking to the familiar. The only two movies in the last 2 years in the top 10 that isn't a sequel or tied to an existing IP was Oppenheimer and a film from China .

Look at the Disney slate for the next three years. It's insanity. And I think what happened post-COVID, especially with stuff like Lightyear, that what we are inline for is a bunch of stuff that looks just like what came before. Not similar, the same. Iger know it works. Even when the movies aren't good, it works.
I wasted all that time typing back and forth when this whole time your point was actually that known IP’s make money?!?! Boy bye! :weeping:

I mean, I said it from the start. I didn't hide it. I'm so confused. I don't think Doomsday is making money because it's going to be good. At this point I don't think there is a good Avengers movie. FC you put too much faith in people liking things that are good. :funny:

The continuity is great for making money. Not so much for the creative endeavor of filmmaking.
This can be an issue, but I don’t think it has to be an absolute barrier to creativity. One of the best things that Marvel made in recent years was Werewolf by Night, and that was very different from standard Marvel action comedy fare.

I’m also of the mind that the Reevesverse should DEFINITELY merge with Gunn World if making money is Zaslav’s main motivation. Have Pattinson meet Coronswet on a rooftop in a post credit scene could have a Nick Fury in Iron Man type of impact.

Oh man, Gunn probably can’t wait fast enough to respond to this one

I just find it puzzling that WB dated Clayface and The Batman: Part 2 less than a month apart, even though the former is a typical WB early September horror release.

I do appreciate the fact that Gunn and Safran are green lighting scripts that are finished and ready to shoot. It makes it less costly in the long run and gives the studio a reliable stream of movies (provided that DC Studios’ Superman relaunch is a success).

Well now you have me nervous.

If anything, I think Penguin's success has given Reeves more freedom. If anything, I am thinking Gunn has lost Batman while Reeves is doing his thing. And honestly, possibly even after.

(stares at all GOT spinoffs....)

This isn’t all that relevant here but I just saw that Hulu is reviving PRISON BREAK again.

Serious question… is there some huge Prison Break fanbase out there that keeps goading studios into reviving that ****? The last time I knew someone who was into that show was way back when the original series was still on the air. Who the hell keeps asking for more?

I don’t know why yall getting worked up about these DCU/Reeves Elseworlds release dates or whatever.

While that damn Zaslav is still in control, everything is uncertain. :o

Us next week after the trailer drops and the stinger is Clark telling Lex his head looks like a penis:

LMAO you laugh, but this is James Gunn we’re dealing with here. That is a VERY real, penile possibility.

You really have been listening to eternal sunshine! I see you Flick!!

LOL, I think he knows he has to restrain himself for Supes. He can get away with that for Guardians and Suicide Squad because that humor lends itself more to groups of misfits and ****bags but I think the humor in Superman is gonna skew more towards the neighborhood of the Donner Superman/Raimi's Spider-Man, etc.

You’re probably right, but the only thing that gives me pause is when he recently praised Corenswet for his comedic timing.

When I heard that I knew. :csad:

I don’t know if R&B is your thing, but listen to the boy is mine remix that has Brandy & Monica on it with her.

You’ll hit replay!
Considering I was initially disappointed at my first listen to that song (like a fool) because I had assumed it was a straight-up cover of Brandy/Monica's, I will be doing this immediately! :hrt:

Mackie going over his Marvel contract very, very closely right now....

They tried to give Sam the mantle in the comics and that didn't last. So why are people surprised when the MCU has an even bigger audience where for them, Steve Rogers IS Captain America?

Because Chris Evans sounded like he was ready to move on.

Here’s the thing, we all knew Chris would be back ONE day. RDJ also. I think we all thought it’d be much further down the line for a special occasion with a ton of time and distance. I dont think we anticipated it’d be literally in the next Avengers movie following Endgame.

And make no mistake, had Chris’ career post endgame been going smoothly he likely WOULD have moved on. And now he’s following his Red One co-star’s lead and going back to the thing that made him famous.
