The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread* - Part 61

No.

It just needed to be allowed to focus on the things it clearly WANTED to focus on - the dynamic of these women and Carol’s guilt over the way she handled both her personal life and superhero life (the villain’s motivation was a fantastic conceit squandered by not being even a little fleshed out), and it could’ve been a proper film. The multiverse BS was so painfully unnecessary and shoehorned in.

It was Captain Marvel's version of Thor: The Dark World. Lets be honest about it.

I still don’t understand the point of including the X-Men stuff in The Marvels.

Beast looked amazing though but it was truly pointless.

Because Kamala is supposed to the harbringer of the X-men. Also trying to be cute since Carol became Binary while with the X-men in the comics.

I'd watch The Marvels over the vast majority of the MCU, just to watch Carol, Kamala, Monica, and Sam do their thing. Infectious

But it does hurt that there is a lot of story there, that was clearly ripped out. If only they had hired a talented storyteller to direct- oh wait. They did. And then didn't trust her.

Given the way they threw Dacosta under the bus, it was much, much more than "not trust".

I just wanted one big emotional scene where Auntie Carol, Lt Trouble and Maria just cry it out with each other somehow.

Carol and Maria are right up there with Cap and Bucky. :o

I got a scene confirming that Carol was on earth with Maria during the blip at the end. Like a good wife.

Sure I’ll be honest: I’d happily watch The Marvels again anytime, and you couldn’t pay me to sit through TDW ever again. You obviously feel differently, which is fine, mileage varies and all that. But they are not the same to me at all besides being two movies that were hindered from reaching their potential by their studio’s meddling, which, frankly, describes a lot of MCU movies at this point.

Why would you "happily watch" an MCU movie that you also say was ruined by Marvel? If you liked it enough to watch it again, was it really ruined?

It seems like you want to have it both ways. "I like this movie... but Kevin Feige ruined it"

Like Darth, I found it perfectly enjoyable, because the action was well-directed and the leads were great together. But unlike TDW, there was obviously a much deeper story there that was chopped to bits - ergo, its potential was hindered. It could’ve been more than a fun weightless diversion, but it wasn’t, because of obvious studio meddling. Really not that complicated.

And for the record, there are plenty of Marvel movies that I don’t think are particularly good but would happily watch, thanks to likable characters and/or fun moments and action. They’re mostly empty calories that way. TDW just isn’t one of those movies. It’s a pure slog to get through imo.

I'm still confused at how I love Thor 4, but dislike Thor 3.

I attribute it to Natalie Portman.
Ragnarok is my MCU movie. I geninuely love it. But Love and Thunder is also a treat, much in the way I find the Marvels. It's the one MCU flick that made me tear up.

Thor might be the only series that has 3 movies I actually like. The first is an underrated gem imo, and my favorite of the of Phase 1.

TDW feels a lot like the Ant-Man sequels. Obligations.

I enjoyed Thor 4, mainly for Natalie. But I have I admit I’ve never had any desire to rewatch it. TDW is worse though. I wish I could memory hole that piece of crap.

I tried hard to like The Marvels but it just didn’t work for me. Is it worse than TDW? I don’t know but something about it just didn’t click. Stuff like the musical planet and the villain just fell flat for me. And it committed the cardinal sin of bringing that MAGAt idiot Kelsey Grammer into the MCU. I don’t care what anyone says; he sucks as Beast, he sucks as a human being, and I even hated him all the way back in CHEERS. Seriously, I’ve never found him funny, charming, or whatever he’s supposed to be. He has ONE character that he plays in everything. Frasier was the most overrated show of the 90s. He should go back to appearing in stuff like Money Plane and whatever movies Ben Shapiro is producing. I never want to see him in anything again.

all o' y'all

I quite enjoyed the Marvels, agree the villain was undercooked though. But I didn't find the idea of a multiversal portal to be shoehorned in. The idea of portals being ripped into the sky was all throughout the movie, so the idea that she would get the second bangle and inadvertently rip a whole to another universe made movie sense to me. The X-men stuff was clear fanbait though, surprised they didn't put it in the early trailers (which were terrible and a big part of the movie's box office problem)

Thor 4 is in no way better than Ragnarok. Ragnarok is pure gold. I give Love and Thunder some credit, because Portman was great, and honestly I still think its one of Hemsworth's best, most emotional performances. But any movie that so completely wastes an actor like Christian Bale AND a character as good as Gorr is a major failure. They should have chosen either the Gorr or Mighty Thor stories and focused on one, not both. IMO it should've been Gorr, with Jane's story in Thor 5.

And Shinobi, man, really, no love for Iron Man, even in the first movie?? It's still in my top 10, I'll watch Iron Man 1 any day of the week. It's the godfather of this whole thing.
