The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread* - Part 61

Jurassic World sounds like the dumbest plot and will almost certainly be the July blockbuster I like the least but also I fully expect it to run laps around the other two at the box office and hey it's the prettiest looking one I guess it's got that going for it.

If a thirty year old white dude had the kind of heat and popularity behind him Pedro does we'd be seeing a dozen articles about "Is this... is this man a MOVIE STAR?!". As happens every time an incredibly boring new white guy with Brad Pitt-adjacent looks is in one to two successful movies. Strange how that happens for literally no other kind of actor.
Between Pedro, Oscar, and Diego, it feels purposeful that the attention feels so fleeting.

Ninjablade: If only Scarlett had her Jersey accent. Avatar would fall!

What the hell is this gross Variety article about Rachel Zelger? Disgusting that Disney is putting something like this out. The Gal Gadot defending is insane.
Right wing pivot plus easy scapegoat. Zegler is crazy talented but is absolutely going to get shoved into career jail. Hopefully she finds other projects and keeps speaking her truth, because she's done absolutely nothing wrong.

Every one of these articles is like "Rachel Zegler is cool as hell and that's bad actually"

Calling it now: JWorld ain’t making a billion. Each one has made notably less than the previous one, and in this case, the previous one was like the NWH of the franchise that brought all the old cast members back, which barely crossed a billion by like a dollar.

Don’t get me wrong, it will still do well, and probably beat the other July releases, but a billion I sincerely doubt.

Once again I say, Lilo & Stitch will win the summer unless it totally sucks.

Anyway, I wouldn’t put too much stock into that Fandango poll. Here are the last two:

I hate to see Rachel attacked like this. She’s a great actress who isn’t afraid to call attention to important issues, so of course the MAGAts went after her. Well, they would have anyway since she Latina and as I’m sure Megyn Kelly would remind us, “the REAL Snow White is white! Just like Jesus and Santa Claus!”

They know that the MAGA crowd lives for stuff like this and the article will be shared far and wide about how "woke" killed the film.
This has nothing to do with MAGA. It's hard to quantify what talking about treatment the Palestinian people have gone through does to a whole lot of liberals. They are defending a far right government's actions while being the same folk who will rightly call out our own in the US.

There has been a lot of young people going too far in their rhetoric so I get the sensitivity and much more do to generational trauma. There is resurgence of antisemitism on the left, with the ever present presence on the right. But the blanketing of anyone who speaks on the plight of the Palestinian people as antisemitic has been a complete attack on empathy for people, babies, who are being killed daily simply for living where they were born.

I don't think it's an accident that a lot of those that have spoke out in Hollywood are a) POC, b) long time leftist and/or c) Jewish.

What I think JW has going for it, at least overseas, is a China that has been resurgent at the box office. If anything is going to claw back the massive losses in that region for western films, beyond Avatar, it will be the dino flick. If it doesn't, it might actually be in trouble.

It's shaky domestically, but I feel like relaunching with a proper star might give it some new life. Could also go terribly.

Oh, yeah. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was a thing. What a mid lineup of movies this is here for 2024.

I was just noting in the Superman thread how most of 2024’s actual biggest hits of the year, aside from the top 2, were spring and fall releases. What a weird year!

In other news, Ben Affleck just admitted to Variety that the Snyderverse tried to be too adult and that he knew they’d f***ed up when he realized his son couldn’t watch it.

And of course the Snyder hardcore fans are spinning it as WB paid for the article to have it released on the anniversary of B v S because they fear the demand for Snyder coming back.

To be fair, The Batman is way scarier for kids than BvS but we all collectively look the other way because it was, y'know, good. :o

What studio fears demand for one of their movies? After all, it all translates to,$$$$$$

But also, it’s not a movie also starring Superman and Wonder Woman. That’s where “leaving the kids behind” REALLY becomes a problem.
That's true. By comparison, Wonder Woman is a movie that deals with mature situations but is still more accessible to kids because the story isn't so convoluted.

Affleck's comment got me thinking, though. Most of the Batman movies from '89 to The Batman have had some pretty scary stuff for kids with the exception of Batman & Robin. The difference is that those are "kids like to be scared" movies while BvS is more intense and violent with themes kids don't understand or are otherwise bored by.

Ironic considering how it deals with said violence and themes is no different than how a child would :hehe:
