The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread* - Part 61

All this positive talk about Born Again has inspired me to try and finally finish the damn Marvel Netflix shows :D

This is what I still need to watch:

Defenders Season 1
Daredevil Season 3
Jessica Jones Seasons 2 & 3
Luke Cage Season 2
Iron Fist Season 2
Punisher Seasons 1 & 2

This project should keep me busy for awhile :oldrazz:

There's some gems in there
but all in all, I'd say, take your time lol

Also, I’ve really been enjoying BA, was worried the reshoots would be poorly stitched together with the original version of the show.

Just finished Infinity War, next up: Endgame. Josh Brolin's Thanos is a great villain, there's an everyman quality to him amidst all the megalomania. He's a misguided hypocrite, but not unlike John Kramer, he genuinely believes in his agenda and its righteousness. He might be a big purple Ballchinian, but he has layers.

You really don’t need to watch any of Iron Fist lol.

I'm watching Infinity War, and I do really like it still. It builds on everything that came before and successfully mixes characters and elements introduced in other projects. It's almost like a whole season of Game of Thrones in one sitting, but it works, somehow. The humor is hit and miss, but that's the MCU for me. I like how dark this film is compared to most projects in the franchise, it's not pulling any punches.

This brings me to Doomsday and Secret Wars and a recurring topic. These are supposed to be the Infinity War and Endgame of the new era, but those films were built on a mountain of material that captivated their audience. There were two smaller Avengers films and an Avengers 2.5 in the form of Civil War, all adding to the big conclusion emotionally.

We have nothing of the sort for the new duology, which means that the Russos aren't equipped with a rich filmography of material to cultivate, but rather a catalogue of films and streaming shows that largely haven't found the same kind of success. This is going to be challenging, making an artificial setup into something grand. We'll see, I'm certainly excited to meet the Fox-Men again, even if the versions are new. That in itself is a challenge, since this is supposed to be an Avengers film, and I'm not looking forward to the Avengers.
Infinity War is still one of my favorites. It jumps around with all the characters very well and I enjoy Thanos having a protagonist's journey to mirror Thor's (also the best balance of Thor's character this far). It also succeeds in making the villain winning a "satisfying" conclusion.

I agree that it won't be as easy to have people buy into the story as in IW/EG as the story was already clearly started before and they are missing two or all three of the most popular ones (depending on Spidey). On the other hand many characters are still loved though, as are the Avengers as a concept/brand, and the vast majority of films have to get the audience to buy into the story from nothing as most don't build on other films, so I don't think it's too much of a problem. The problem is mainly a financial one, as the company will have extremely high expectations there.

Here's a better question: Are Marsden, Grammer, Cummings etc playing their OG X-Men selves or...are they playing a live action version of the X-Men 97 crew? They're just, you know, using the 2000s cast to do it? Gambit's casting has me wondering this.
Probably variants with more comic inspired costumes
This. It'll probably be separate from the whole convoluted timeline of the Fox movies. It's also an easy way to explain why Tatum is there. What would make the most sense is if it's the universe that Monica ended up in at the end of The Marvels.

That makes sense to me.
After all we have to go back there to see her again.

Wow. I hadn't even heard about the Avengers cast reveal until I logged into The Hype earlier today. I really need to start paying more attention to my feeds :oldrazz:

Anyway, nothing too surprising here. The Marvels post-credits scene made the return of the Fox-Men inevitable, while both No Way Home and Deadpool/Wolverine demonstrated the public's insatiable appetite for nostalgia superhero casting...

I'm just hoping this will be the last we see of returning pre-MCU Marvel actors for awhile. I know the whole Bold New Direction thing is a hoary old chestnut of a cliche, but I'm ready for some fresh storytelling with more street-level adventures for Spidey and a different take on X-Men than we've previously seen onscreen.

Of course, if Doomsday grosses in the vicinity of $2 billion, we'll probably be seeing the likes of Stewart, McKellen, Snipes, Garner, Marsden, Romijn, Cuming, and Grammer in the MCU until the sun eventually vaporizes our oceans :o

Not really. We are quickly approaching the point where $2 billion will be a financial disappointment.

My theory now is that Jean and Storm havent been announced because they'll be leading the gold team with Iceman, Bishop, Colossus and Angel.

Omar Sy should come back as bishop

At that point we'll be calling them the AARP-Men. Most of them are there already. :o

Do we think we will ultimately get Rogue in this movie, especially with Gambit there? And will they bring back Anna or recast?
It is rumored that Anna has MS since she has been using a cane in public and looking a bit frail in recent years. Can see why she might not come back if she doesn't feel healthy enough to do so.

So what’s the over-under on Taskmaster actually dying in Thunderbolts. She’s unpopular so I could see it, but I can’t remember the last time a company was so blatantly signaling “This character is gonna die” and it wasn’t a fakeout.
Making Taskmaster another boring mute assassin was lame. The comic book version is fun because he has a lot of personality.
