The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread* - Part 61

Can we talk about how absolutely gorgeous the animated parts of this trailer are? Between this, and this little explainer vid released a few weeks ago:

I’d kill for the animated Marvel tv stuff to look as good as these (only thing that comes close is X-Men 97’). Obviously I’m aware of that’d be practically impossible considering the realities of production/budget and there be a world of difference between doing animation on this level in the context of 120 second segments versus doing animation for 20+ minute episodes but…a man can dream.

I agree with you about the animation.

That “before we fall in too deep” line when discussing Death of Gwen Stacy was nasty work though.

That’s the last time I let you take a peek at my joke book. :o

Ian McKellen had that bad fall not too long ago, now they’re gonna hoist him up again to make him fly? Feige is ruthless. :sneeze:
McKellen is 85, Stewart is 84, Grammer is 70, Cumming is 60, Romijn is 52. Not counting Tatum since he's not an OG cast member, Marsden is the youngest at 51. Combine that with a 56 year old Jackman, 58 year old Halle Berry and 60 year old Famke Janssen and it's gonna be looking like that bit from the first Jackass movie.

I kid, I kid. CGI makes everyone look younger. :o

Okay, Endgame. It's good, but I like it less than its predecessor. Infinity War builds up on the entire franchise, whereas Endgame feels more like a gratuitous victory lap. I understand why it's so beloved, but I guess I just lack that personal connection and superfandom for the MCU that would elevate it. Overall, I think the two movies are quite impressive for what they are, and I certainly hope the Russos can spark magic like that once again.

Is anyone else laughing at the irony of how 10 years ago when Marvel had the Netflix shows and Agents of Shield and all those random Hulu shows nobody watched and Kevin Feige was like "nah, not in my MCU." And now after introducing a plethora of characters on Disney + firmly set in the MCU, Feige is still like "nah, not in my MCU." None of these characters are popping up in these movies (besides Kamala and Monica who had their one shot in The Marvels lol).

Grace is pissed, first time I've seen that, over the lack of female characters the final Main Cast for Avengers 5.

Honestly though, saw this coming. Iger wants to re-establish Marvel as the boys brand again. Wants the characters on the lunch boxes, action figures and backpacks and so on. He bought Marvel for that reason.

This gives Vanessa Kirby a really great opportunity to stand out as the lead actress in this, as Sue Richards plays an important role. She's got the talent to kill it.

5 out of 27 is undeniably grim for the announced cast.

Maybe they'll take a page from the current X-Books and have Magneto in the Hover chair while Xavier can walk

[Remembers his action scenes in Picard]
Keep Picard in the chair.

Yeah, especially given some of the big names left out are the women.

Food for thought. Joanna Robinson wrote that book about the MCU a few years back. She wrote about Feige's retreat with the Marvel team to course correct the MCU. She mentioned that Doom was the emergency plan if Kang doesn't work. We're in that moment now.

She also mentioned that the characters from Phase 4/5 that didn't work, would get killed, depowered or removed in this Avengers film. This was mentioned in the trades.

Curious who they might be, aside from the obvious Eternals. There's so many characters that can be 'pruned' off.

Nah, they're just going to deage them all

I have to imagine there'll be more female characters that we don't know about but I didn't even realize how skewed the ratio was. Jeez.

Nah, they're just going to deage them all
Snapchat babyface filters for the win! Marvel is gonna catfish the audience. :o

Time for some fun kitchen math with speculation

RDJ=$50 million
The Russos=$40 million

Those are established.

Hemsworth got $20 for Love and Thunder, definitely getting that for Doomsday.

So already at $110 million.
For the FF, going with $20 million for the 4, though I suspect Pascal is getting more than his costars. Up to $130 million, already a decent sized movie budget.

Rudd may be in the $20 million range now, but just going to keep him in the $15 million range for now. Mackey and Hiddleston are definitely in that grouping. I also kind of want to put Pugh in that level, so another $60 million. $190 total.

Liu and Wright I feel are under 8 figures, so go with 8. I think Harbour is there as well. So, another $24 for $214 million.

I think I will toss Duke, Ramirez, Pullman, and John-Kamen together in the $3 mill. Another $12 for $226 million.

I think Stewart and McKellan can demand big buck after Jackman got paid for D&W, so $5 mil a piece, for $236 million.

Which leaves the remaining 5 X-cameos. Call it half a mill each, round up for someone being a diva, call it $3 million.

So, $239 million dollars just for part of the cast and the directors. And I am possibly being generous to Marvel to some of them. Thank you for reading this distraction I gave myself.

Are we talking per movie or Doomsday and Secret Wars combined? Add in the ones we don't know about yet and we're talking well over half a billion. Jackman, Reynolds, Holland, and Pratt by themselves are going to be close to $100 million if not more than that.

Just for Doomsday, because RDJ and the Russo's deal are for both, I split them in half. But yeah, it adds up quick.

Those Born Again season 2 set photos.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if they poured all this money into Doomsday and its budget becomes so high that it will need to break more than a billion to even break even.

It is a little misleading since you can easily see Leticia, Vanessa and Florence having the most screen time after Pedro, Downey and Hemsworth. Not about how many characters but what they do in the movie. The only thing that sticks out to me is Brie not being back

Not really. We are quickly approaching the point where $2 billion will be a financial disappointment.
If any studio is disappointed by a $2 billion hit I would be more than happy to give them my address so that they can spread some of those “disappointing”” grosses around!

Brie not being back, YET!

The higher the budget, the higher the expected return will be. While $2 billion may be technically profitable, you don't spend that much money for only a few million in profit. They want Endgame money.
