OOC Awards
Overall MVP (in all catagories): Byrd Man
This one is just kind of a given these days, as you seemingly can't turn around without finding Byrd heavily involved in another RPG. DC, UDC, All-Star, there's no escaping him!
MVP (in Marvel): bkhedr
Backing up MB's reasons for nomination, bk has been the backbone of the Marvel RPG, and was a huge help in keeping All-Star afloat by giving us our first major villain. He's one of those guys who genuinely puts a lot of work into his characters and how they act, and it shows. Without bk, I'm fairly certain the Marvel games would have gone under quite a while ago.
MVP (in DC): Byrd Man
Again, there's no escaping the clutches of Byrd, especially not in the DC games. His stuff with Guy and Batman in WoH is excellent, and his work with the Flash and Question in UDC always makes me laugh out loud (not to mention his kick-ass stuff with Nygma, but that's not exactly comedic)
MVP (in Misc): n/a
Unfortunately I haven't spent much of this year in any of the Misc. games, so I wouldn't really consider myself qualified to pick an MVP from there.
RPG Lifetime Achievement Award: Keyser Soze
This is a guy who absolutely knows his heroes and especially his villains. His work with Hal Jordan was nothing short of heartbreaking at times, putting the GLC's knight in shining armor through the wringer like no one else. And his Joker? Are you freaking kidding me? I don't think I've ever seen any writer, amateur or professional, who has a better handle on the Clown Prince of Crime and why he does what he does. Which makes his season-ending finale in WoH all the more ballsy.
RPG of the Year: All-Star Marvel
This was a close call, as I also love Ultimate DC, but ASM meant a lot more to me personally this year. First of all, because it introduced me to the joys and endless frustrations that come with being a GM. But also because the concept and the world we had set up was just a really and truly exciting place to play around in. It's had some really great moments and some not so great ones, but at the end of the day, ASM has become my baby, and I'd be selling out if I voted for anything else.
Best Game Master Award: wiegeabo
Well, he's an AGM, but still, the man's roster checks are an ever-present and always effective way of spurring us on in WoH. Oh crap, I haven't posted as Superman in
how long?!
Breakout Player of the Year: Eddie Brock
Maybe it's because this was the first year I started really paying attention, but EBJ's work has really impressed me this year, between his work as Iron Man in ASM and as Selina Kyle in UDC. He's been really flexing his creative muscle and his range as an RPer, and it's been great to see.
Most Improved Player: Sabetoonth
I'll be blatantly honest: when Sabetoonth showed up, I didn't think he was going to last two months. But since then he's stepped up his game significantly, throwing a lot of work and effort into his stuff, and now he's becoming a capable player.
Best Newcomer: Bounce
Bounce's work as Lor-Zod and as Damian Wayne have both been extremely entertaining to read, playing not one but two utterly insufferable brats, who still feel like unique and distinct characters rather than two different iterations of the same personality. This guy's got the goods.
IC Awards
Best Multiple PC Story Arc: "Darkseid vs. Everyone Else" from World of Heroes
Considering the amount of work and planning that Watchman put into this arc, it really wouldn't seem fair to nominate anything else. It was a massive-scale showdown that had just about the entire RPG involved in it in one way or another, and while it may have fizzled out a bit towards the end, the buildup to it was immense.
Best Solo Story Arc: "Holiday/White Christmas" from Ultimate DC
I usually like my arcs big and over-the-top, but Byrd's murder mystery really drew me in. It was jam-packed with unexpected twists and turns, and it helped that the protagonist we followed was just so wonderfully despicable. Great stuff.
Best Hero: Hal Jordan (Keyser Soze) in World of Heroes
Considering that Keyser is usually known for playing the most villainous of villains, I wasn't too sure how his foray into playing one of the good guys would work out. However, I'm glad to say it's been phenomenal. Sometimes the best way to make a clean-cut character like Hal more interesting is to put him through the proverbial gauntlet, and boy, Keyser did not let up. You can feel just how much the guy is going through with each post, and how strong he's got to be in order to keep going. The end result is greatness.
Best "Walking The Line" Character: Sinestro (wiegeabo) in World of Heroes
On the opposite end of that is the guy playing Hal's perennial nemesis. wieg's work as Sinestro has always been top-notch, taking a character who really hadn't been fully explored until recently in the comics, and making him a complex and truly intriguing character. Whether he's side-by-side with the Justice League or leading an army of Fear Lanterns into an intergalactic war, it never feels out of character for him, and that's very much to wieg's credit.
Best Villain: Bane (Spike_x1) in Ultimate DC
Maybe it's just because I haven't read Knightfall in a really long time, but I've never been a big fan of Bane. However, Spike's work with him has seriously changed my mind: his Bane is one that's just as intimidating mentally as he is physically, one that can match and even outdo Batman again and again. In fact, I'd honestly say that as far as the Ultimate DC universe is concerned, Bane has supplanted the Joker as Batman's true arch-nemesis.
Best Developed Character: Loki (Keyser Soze) in Heroes vs. Villains
What I love about Keyser's Loki is that absolutely nothing is certain about him/her, whether Loki can truly be trusted or if he can even trust himself. The fact that we'd seen him go from villain to hero and back and are never really sure which one is the "real" one made him one of my absolute favorite characters to read in that game.
Best Team-Up: Superman and the Flash in Ultimate DC
While normally team-up arcs usually involve some big ominous threat or cracking an especially complicated mystery, this one was just plain fun. Spike and Byrd played off of each other really well, and the plot with Maxima was equal parts exciting and ridiculous.
Best Fight: Sabretooth vs Daredevil in Heroes vs. Villains
Victor Creed's rise to power as the new Kingpin was a real treat to read, especially when his organization ran afoul of Matt Murdock. bk and Byrd churned out a fight that was pretty brutal and very entertaining.
Best Post: Absolutely anything involving Howard the Duck in All-Star Marvel (but this one if I have to be specific)
http://forums.superherohype.com/showpost.php?p=19350874&postcount=1067
If there is one solitary reason to take part in ASM, it's this: Rain Dog is goddamn hilarious as Howard.
