Yay... I managed to read ASM #698 without being spoiled...
I doubt Doc will stay in Pete's body for long. I think they pull through with it and have Surperior Spider-Man be someone else entirely...
Superior Spider-Man #1 interiors
I wonder if there's a story behind the different colored webbing or if the colorist is just trying to be different....?
Have you guys seen J Scott Campbell's variant covers for ASM 700 and Superior Spider-Man #1?
Potential spoilers ahead, of course:
Here's the ASM 700 cover fully colored and everything, no spoilers:
Doc...Doc Ock is the Superior Spider-Man.
I just lost a lot of interest here.
Perhaps it's a clue to what is really under the mask...
It's someone who was around during Spider-Island, got the virus, but had something in them that kept them from transforming into a monster. I.e. Norman Osborn was in hospital, got virus, but serum kept him from transforming.
Nah let's not get ahead of ourselves here. I don't think they'd reveal who he was 3 issues early. Dan pretty heavily implied that that issue would be resolved by the end of this arc.
all da tentacles...?
Who knows. Covers are deceiving.
Besides, that still wouldn't explain the claws or the weird lenses.
Or the change in costume and stuff in the first place.
Maybe he is
fighting Dock Ock or something
Kinda similar to The Creation of Adam painting on the roof of the Sistine Chapel.
Covers almost mean zilch in today's comics.....we'll have to wait and see for this one. It will all be clear in 4 short weeks...
It doesn't necessarily mean he is Doc Ock. From the looks of it the artist seems to be implying they're two halves of a whole, so it's possible their personalities fuse, creating an edgier Spider-Man so to speak with the desire to still protect people like Peter. It also looks like he's lost some of his powers to me somehow. He needs talons like O'Hara now to climb walls and judging by this interior art...
....Spider-Man has lost his spidey sense. It also appears he wears goggles to protect his eyes. As has been speculated all of this points to O'Hara being the new Spider-Man, but that would be too obvious at this point and wouldn't explains that cover of the Superior Spider-Man kissing MJ. My guess is that somehow in 700 Peter's body loses its powers along with becoming fused with Doc Ock. But since he still wants to protect people, we're shown in Avenging Spider-Man 15.1 (the comic that's being released alongside Amazing 700 and is supposed to give closure to it) he develops a new suit that makes up for his lack of powers. And thus, it would make the "Superior" title an ironic label, since this new version of Spider-Man is actually physically weaker and less "amazing" than the old one...yet you could also say he's mentally superior for still wanting to help people even without his powers.
Don't be silly, it's obviously
it explains why the eyes look like they could be corrective lenses
the SUPERIOR Spider-Man tag is OBVIOUSLY [blackout]Doc Ock's[/blackout] arrogance at work...
Hell yeah, I'm all for
being the Superior Spider-Man
so you want to see [blackout]Doc[/blackout] as Peter trying to get into MJ's pants?...
jeez, the creepiness factor there...
Trying is one thing... getting into... well, that's another...
if MJ is willing, thinking that it's Peter and she's none the wiser... well, you know how THAT'LL go...
What if it's
Peter in Norman's body (having kept Ock's memories as well he'ld know how to switch minds too)
which would explain why he wouldnt have the spider sense
I don't think it'll be Peter in any form, just based on the dialogue in the ASM 700 preview.
I agree, I'll be checking that out as well. I think there's a fair chance that with the mindset of the person in question combined with Peter Parker he could very well be superior in many ways. The way he spoke to MJ in 698 alone shows he was actually capable of moving forward with emotions and just laying things out there without the typical "well he's peter parker so even if he goes out to get coffee he needs to be seen screwing up completely an being an utter failure" that we've had for so long.
On a side note completely unrelated to the topic at hand one of my favorite Spider-Man stories was Spider-Man/Doc Ock Year one.
So is 699.1 just going to be a preview of Morbius The Living Vampire?
I think it's gonna be Morbius breaks free from the Raft and perhaps it's him interacting with Spidey since
Also do we still need to hide spoilers for 698 given that 699 is out?
Yeah, I notice the lack of spider-sense in those images as well. And I also agree that, based on where things stand right now (especially with those linking variant covers for Amazing Spider-Man #700 and Superior Spider-Man #1) it does look very plausible that like we're going to get a Peter Parker/Doc Ock merge a la Firestorm. Especially given how Amazing Spider-Man #699 explains how Doc Ock did the mind swap:
Notice that Peter says that the gold octobot hacked into his brain and rewrote it with Doc Ock's brain patterns, and then did the reverse to Doc Ock. While the issue doesn't actually state it outright, that technically means that Peter is still Peter, only now he literally thinks like Doc Ock and Doc Ock is still Doc Ock only he now literally thinks like Peter, meaning there wasn't a literal swapping of minds. Because brain patterns are not synonymous with a mind.
So yeah, the Superior Spider-Man being a hybrid of Peter Parker and Doc Ock seems like the strongest possibility at this point. Unless Dan Slott pulls a very out of left field swerve like having Paste Pot Pete be the Superior Spider-Man, of course.
Oh, and something else that was brought to my attention:
Notice how in Amazing Spider-Man #699, when Peter begins rifling through Doc Ock's memories to try and come up with an escape plan, one of the things he makes mention of is "robot duplicates?" Hmm...
