Fans and Critics of Superman, lend me your ear!

I have been posting on this message board ever since X-Men 3 came out and I wanted to share and read other fans' critics and reactions to that film. From the discussions I've either read or participated in, everyone seems to me to be very well-informed and well-behaved and quick to listen to other people's comments before formulating their own.

But, man oh man, did "Superman Returns" bring out the nastiness in everyone! I have never seen so many fans so divided over a comic-book film before. Everyone agrees (to an extent) that Spider-Man and Batman were well done films, while Fantastic Four and Daredevil and Elektra decline in quality. There seems to be no controversy as to how those films stack against one another.

Superman Returns, however, polarizes people so much! A very vocal group of people are incrediblity disappointed with the picture, and another equally vocal group of people think it is one of the best comic-book films of all time.

I don't think we as a online message board community will ever come to an agreement about Superman Returns. It will be a debate that goes on for years. And years. And years.

But I do think that the people who protest so vehemently about the film do so because they really wanted to like the Superman Returns movie, and were disappointed by how much they didn't enjoy it.

And I also think that everyone should just relax about this film. I mean, is it really worth it to continually post about hating this picture with a passion, or getting worked up and defending the picture since someone that lives so many miles away hated it? I mean, c'mon, at the end of the day nothing is really accomplished by this "online message board wars" or whatever you want to call it. Some people are going to hate it, and some people are going to love it. There is really no point in arguing about it anymore since everyone is pretty much set on their beliefs about the movie.

I had a fun time kidding around with Upper Krust because I know he didn't like the movie, and I did. But pretty much everything I said was in jest because I'm just very tired of this whole debate. I say, have some fun if you guys want to continue arguing with one another and spice up your posts, but it makes me laugh so much when fans formulate whole "thesis" and "papers" explaining their particular point of views about a film. It is only a movie, don't take it so seriously!

I must say, I agree whole heartedly.

Debate's fine, debate's great, but when you have people going around saying things like - and I quote - "F*** SINGER, F*** DONNER!!!!!" it's just pointless, and probably quite harmful to the people doing the cursing.

I'm not just saying that because I like (well...love) SR. I've suffered plenty of disappointing, even horrid films and comics and whatnot (Batman & Robin and the Star Wars prequels to name a few), but it's just not worth it to feel a deep hatred against, well, anything as unimportant as a movie.

There's much more important things in life to care about, and think about, and - heh - write papers about.

So true.

I mean, it was great and kind of inevitable that people would write about how they feel about this film... but it was released way back in May! I think everything Pro and Con has been said about this film before. I personally can't wait for the DVD to come just in time for Christmas, and I'm sure the SR critics can't wait to boycott the DVD, or buy it just to smash it in protest. =)

Adieu.

Adieu.

I think everyone needs to express their feelings on this movie.

For some people it's a really important movie, it's Superman's cinematic revival after all, so I can understand people being vocal about it. (Love it or Hate it)..... But I suppose that's what you get on message boards. Fanboys, both defending and attacking a movie they feel passionate about. It's part of the fun.

But you are right. It's time to move on to discuss something more productive than teh suit. A sequel is coming. Bryan Singer is coming back, and apparently the whole creative team behind Superman Returns. Wich means, it's time to propose ideas for the sequel, changes, improvements, etc. It's time to be constructive. We shouldn't hate on the sequel because SR wasn't your cup of tea. So, how about changing the attitude around here and start seeing the franchise in a more positive light. A sequel is coming, let's see that it lives up to most people's Superman interests.

Well said. 100% agree.

I think those of us who did not like SR feel disenfranchised from this series of movies now b/c we have seen an approach to Superman that we feel is completely out of character. Therefore, like many disappointments in life, we have to find a way to work it out. It may just be a movie, but what if you only see a few movies a year? What if you are a comic reader and you fear this version becoming the standard one in the comic? What if you feel that SUperman has been ruined by someone who doesn't seem to understand the essence of the character? The implications go far beyond just a movie.

Superman is supposed to be a role model. Now we have a role model that can unknowingly father a child and still stand for the same ethics and values as before? The movie changes a lot about the character and rather drastically. It really is bigger than just a movie. Superman is not just a comic character. He is an American icon. He stands for certain things. He does not stand for absentee fathers or irresponsible, immature and cowardly behavior. You can't show this movie to your kids.

It may seem like a movie, but it really goes deeper than that.

But you're point about being civil and polite is well taken. It doesn't mean the ones who didn't like the movie can't campaign against Singer's vision in the sequel.

I enjoyed X-Men 3 as much as I did the first two, maybe even a fraction more than I enjoyed the first two (in part because Juggernaut is my favourite 'X-character').

Was it all over a bit too quick...probably. I'd have liked to have seen another 15-20 minutes. But it also didn't outstay its welcome...unlike a certain other movie. :oldrazz:

Did it deviate from the comics...almost certainly. But so did Superman Returns and I remember reading Harry Knowles hypocritical reviews of both movies and losing a lot of respect for the guy. Haven't read any of his posts/reviews since.

The bottom line was that I found X-Men 3 entertaining. Even though I am generally not an X-men fan.

Agree on Spiderman and Batman.

I actually watched Fantastic Four again recently and even though I thought it wasn't great, it was certainly entertaining and fun. I think the main problem therein was the lack of an actual story and the handling of Doctor Doom. I have high hopes for the sequel. One last thing, I never thought I would be critical of Jessica Alba getting her kit off, but the two scenes in FF where she did strip (on the bridge, and in the street when people chased her) were just the most gratuitous nonsense I have ever seen. They were totally illogical. How did her stripping off on the bridge help get Reed and Johnny 20 feet further up the bridge nearer Ben. Also when she was getting chased in the street all she had to do was get in a cab for goodness sake! :whatever: That said, an invisible shower scene would have been cool. :oldrazz:

Daredevil I also quite enjoyed, I don't understand a lot of negativity about it. I actually thought the biggest problem with Daredevil was that they simply didn't establish Kingpin as any sort of threat at all. So when Daredevil beats him at the end its meaningless to the audience, and totally anti-climactic.

Hulk had a number of problems. Firstly it was too slow to get to the action. Secondly Hulk doesn't talk, so the audience can't empathise with him. Thirdly, the ending was just a confused mess. His dad turns into the Absorbing Man (a Thor villain just to be clear) but the fight between them is totally impossible to follow. Also (as with Kingpin, and Doctor Doom) they never really establish the villain as a threat.

Elektra was a total misconception. Its a kids movie about an assassin. Those two things don't sit well together. They should have let Frank Miller write the script and made it an '18'.

I've generally given up posting my thoughts on the matter. But I still like to pop in from time to time to correct people when they label Superman Returns a 'success', because thats simply not true.

You know who you people are, the ones who say nonsense like "It made $390 million, of course its a success". "It made more money worldwide than Batman, so it must be a success, because Batman was a success." I mean with all due respect these people don't have even a basic grasp of elementary economics!

I explained why I was so vocal about my dislike of the movie.

1. So that they wouldn't bring Singer back.
2. If they did bring Singer back, that he would actually listen to the constructive criticism.

I never made any personal attacks on Singer, and I think people that do so are a bit immature. But at the same time I think he made a lot of really stupid decisions.

I also think, when you are given that responsibility and immense amounts of money, that you should stand accountable. However, Singer did vet the questions at comic-con, which tells us he had little faith in his own movie.

Also he did mention in interviews that he didn't have reasons or answers for why things in the movie happened the way they did. I wouldn't expect that level of incompetence in a comic, let alone a movie.

They pretty much butchered the character. If I was a Juggernaut fan, I think I'd be pretty pissed at what they did.

How specifically?

Within the context of the movie, Juggernaut was always going to be relegated to the role of henchman. From that perspective I think he had enough screen time and some very entertaining and fun moments.

Secondly, the whole Cytorrak business would have been a total and utter distraction, within the context of the movie and thus I'm glad it was ignored.

Thirdly, given the contraints of the human body, I think the look of Juggernaut was about as good as could be expected. I mean the comic book design is a 'tad' exaggerated, and you have to wonder how he turns his head. :woot:

Best thread I seen in a while in these boards. Yeah, I don´t think I seen a superhero movie polarize opinions so much on the boards before. We jumped a lot at each other´s throats when we should have debated things more calmly and with a little more objectivity. Now that a lot of the dust has settled, the fact is, there´s going to be another Superman movie and Bryan Singer will direct it. If you hate everything about Singer´s take on the character, let go of the franchise, don´t buy the DVD, don´t pay the ticket to see the sequel, stick to the Donner movie, the Animated Series or whatever your favorite non-comics version of the character is. If you support him, well, everything there was to be said in defense of Superman Returns has been said as well, now we can await with excitement for the new installment. If you don´t completely hate his take but think it can be improved, the sequel is your opportunity to defend what you want to see, more action, a new villain, whatever. But it´s time we get past the whole flame war on SR already.

Well said..we're getting a sequel with singer it appears,so if folks hate S.R. that much, they should just stop posting here, cause its just gonna upset them more..life's to short to let something like that get to ya.:yay:

If you (or Singer) can't take the heat - get out of the kitchen (Forum/Convention, delete as applicable). :oldrazz:

So that when the lurking Warner Bros. staff look in on these forums, all they find are a bunch of people wearing 'I  Bryan Singer' T-shirts. Posting about how much of a box office smash Superman Returns was and lets have more of the same please Mr Singer.

Zod Returns!? Wowee - yes please Mr Singer sir, in fact just remake Superman II and change a few things around.

Less action you say! Well, you know best Mr Singer sir.

$390 million dollars, you sure do have the midas touch Mr Singer sir. Superman Returns was the most successful Superman movie ever! Its a fact!

Lois Lane spin-off movie, I'm pre-ordering my tickets as we speak Mr Singer sir.

More confirmed kills for Jason, jeepers, sounds like fun for all the family!

Great thread!! And as far as I'm concerned, people are allowed to hate RETURNS as much as they want to. Let them b!tch and moan—it doesn't bother me at all. I mean, I did get a SUPERMAN film that I enjoyed the hell out of this summer, and will even be getting a sequel to it with the same director, so I really can't complain...

This reminds me of my "Civility Thread".

The "heat" has become boring at this point. Everything there was to be said for or against the movie has been said already.

Pretty soon Superman Returns will be considered the first movie in a finely tuned trilogy extending the Superman mythos to a new generation. We will all be frequenting either the Superman Returns Sequel section or the Man of Steel section discussing the disadvantages of using Zod or the hype surrounding the introduction of Brainiac.

I absolutely agree.

Also, to me it's unfortunate that a group of people couldn't enjoy the merits of Superman Returns since they have been waiting almost ten-years plus for a Superman reboot and have been deprived of its cinematic pleasure. I do hope that Singer crafts a picture that a larger majority of fans can get behind and celebrate.

Also, one last thing that I never could fully justify about Superman Returns..............

How come when standing on New Krypton, Superman receives a smackdown from Lex and his thugs........ but later he is able to lift New Krypton up into the stratosphere with his superhuman strength? As much as I enjoyed the picture, this one cinematic oversight is something I could never really reason away....

Anyone have any suggestion? Upper Krust, even though you don't like the picture, I want you to play devil's advocate and defend Superman Returns!

Adieu, Adieu.

I feel it's unfair to the legacy of the Character to say it was a SUperman movie. It was a SUperman movie in name only and just didn't contain the essence and goodness of the character to be a SUperman movie.

I think it did. What are you going to do about it?

Seriously, this is getting old fast, folks...

Don't worry folks, this forum will die the same way the Hulk and F4 forums did after the terrible conceptions of those movies. The bulk of fans already moved to Bluetights - this forum will dry out within the next 3 months.

But given the popularity of Superman, the sequel forum will get some attention once the first infos leak.

As for the studios don't caring for the fans opinion on the net: Listen to the commentaries by Singer, Rattner, Raimi on the DVDs. The studios very well know what's going on here and on other places on the net.
The only problem is, they usually don't give a crap and do what they want. The results are movies like Hulk, F4, X3 or SR.
But the attitude is clearly shifting towards the fan's opinions with the newer movies like T.I. Hulk or Iron Man.

If Singer & Co. so desperately want to keep their attitude and deliver something artsy fartsy instead of something comic based, they deserve what they will get.

Hulk, like SR, has a lot of supporters. FF is clearly much more hated than either of those.

You want to know why people constantly debate over seemingly trivial stuff like comic movies? People LIKE to argue, it's in human nature. And arguing anonymously with people over the internet doesn't carry the consequences it would in "real" life. It's not really that big of a mystery, sheesh. :woot:
