I got the subtext and the grand meaning.

As it is presented, in the film at least, it's just not that engrossing. It's a cold, detached movie that doesn't come off as intellectually stimulating as the book. No matter how ambitious the ideas are, if the characters aren't worth following then I couldn't care less how philosophical the whole thing is.

I finally saw Watchmen yesterday, and I have to say I agree, i liked the idea, but the execution...i don't know, it was hard to really care about what happened to any of them, or even the world in the end, there was something a little b-movie-ish about it that I can't quite describe. I'm not sure, maybe i just need to see it again. I did finish the book finally though, and I wish the movie had lived up to the book.

Simon's expression was hilarious. He couldn't believe his ears.

I thought it was some joke when I saw the clip on Morning Joe, but it goes to show you can never judge a book by its cover...

She's surprisingly good.

Secret Identities on ABC News!

"In what respect, Charlie?"

Just got out of Star Trek. And let me tell you, fanboys should rue the day they chased JJ off of Superman. If his reimagining of Superman was 1/3 as good as what he's done with Trek...

(FWIW, in the latest ish of Wired, Abrams revealed that the draft of Superman that got panned by online critics was an early rough draft. Most of the stuff people objected to--like Krypto-Lex--was gone by the time he left the project.)

^we saw it today too - hubby took a day off from work so we could do a double feature of Star Trek & Wolverine. I went in thinking it was supposed to be a real prequel that Abrams had messed up and retconned through sloppiness or lack of caring. I came out thinking there were a few specific bits that were too coincidental even for a Star Trek movie but that otherwise it was a fabulous way to write a whole new set of Star Trek films. Really enjoyed it. Wolverine was awesome too.

If Abrams wants to pick up the towel and write a new imagining of Superman for BR to try out, I say go for it. Having the whole Jason thing being Brainiac-induced hallucination to make him lose faith and come under Brainiac's control would fit perfectly. Our hero would wake up, be sad that he didn't have a son since he wants one, but happy that his life wasn't the mess it was throughout SR and that he hasn't really lost five years and that the real Lois - any real Lois, for us fans - is back and is happy to see him. Add awesome action and bright colors (like in the new Star Trek - very bright bridge there!) and outfits you can actually wear (though the Trek outfits rode up on the guys' middles a lot), and we're set and happy :->

Abrams yes, everything else no.

Please, no more connections to the disaster that was SR. That includes its uninspiring cast. JMHO. Start completely from scratch, as they should have done.

I love you Patsy.

I saw it last night too and thought it was fabulous. Question though....
was Vulcan Take 1 destroyed in the original series???
I cant recall that detail.

Saw it Saturday and it's one of the best Revamp movies ever. If they had gone to credits after the first 15minute intro I'd still say it was awesome. I left impressed. I have a babygirl due to be born this week but if she doesn't come I'll see it again. Heck I'll prolly see it again regardless. The wife won't mind, right?:cwink:

Nope. That's the only thing that I didn't care for. Doing that completely eradicates the past 40yrs of Trek history.:o:cmad:

Good luck with the baby! :yay:

Yeah, we've talked about it here, around my home, and no matter which way we try and spin it we cant make sense of it and what happens to all the next generation Star Trek series, are they now non-existent??

And Romulus is gone as well

Thanks avi. It's gonna be an adjustment to say the least. We have two boys so I don't know what I'm gonna do w/ a little girl.

All Trek canon after this is non-existent now:csad:

Romulus was destroyed roughly 30 yrs after the last Star Trek TNG movie so it might not ever happen now

You guys missed what Abrams was doing. He made it so that the old Star Trek series is still in tact, but instead created a divergent universe where he can now do anything he wants without having to keep track of years of continuity.

When Nero went through the black hole and to the past, he came upon Kirk Sr...battle ensued...and it ended like it did. Once Nero destroyed that ship it caused an offshoot reality, since Kirk died earlier than he was supposed to. It was like Uhura said in the movie, they were dealing with an alternate dimension due to Nero's interference.

So effectively now there are two realities: One in which Nero didn't appear and things went like normal, and one in which he did appear and killed Kirk Sr, destroyed Vulcan, etc etc. So the old reality is still there, like it always has been. But now Abrams can take this new dimension he created and do anything he wants in later sequels.

So yea, I loved the movie, and though the way Abrams avoided years of continuity was pretty genius. He did it in a way that didn't destroy the old continuity in any way, but created a seperate continuity that he could have control over. It was awesome. The guy who played Bones McCoy was spot on, it was like watching a young Deforest Kelly.

Blk, congrats on the youngster.

Two boys and now a girl. That will be interesting and fun. Well I had a third boy after two boys, and I love 'em to pieces. :yay:

I got that. And in that respect it does bring a fresh new look to it, where they can go anywhere they want and alter the characters' personalities slightly.

But its Vulcan!!! First Contact. And now all the other series feel like they are moot.

He was awesome! My favourite.
