I never thought it would reach 200M but I was thinking around 180M but yeah the moment the tragedy hit, it was definitely going to drop to around 160-170. Heck maybe 150s.

People have got to do what's right by them, I suppose.

It does hit close to home. I can certainly understand why some folks are shaken up by it.

It definitely hurt walkups, and pre-sales do not make a record.

ASM got hit with an estimated 70% drop. Every movie is feeling the effects of the shooting. Nobody knows if it'll recover in time to make up some of the gross.

People are going to be debating what level this tragedy had on the films box office for years. Not that it matters, 12 of our Bat fans will never know one way or the other. :(

I get the feeling that Sunday suffers a harsher drop than expected, it might fall behind TDK.

Hell, I'm wondering what this will do to theater attendance as a whole throughout the coming months.

As Anita pointed out, TDKR isn't the only movie being impacted by this. People are scared to go to the theater.

Oh yeah definitely. :csad:

By Monday, when there is an official release of the OW gross, I don't think anyone is really going to care. It'll forever be tainted by this heinous criminal act... I don't think I will ever attend a minight screening ever again. All it takes is one person to motivate many who are sick psychopathic individuals that fantasize about doing the same exact thing.

Just hearing about the six year old girl being one of the victims... That made me hug my six year old son even tighter. The midnight gross should be donated to the families of the victims. And if I were a top executive at WB, I would seriously be considering it.

It's been bad and might get worse later.

This film is forever going to be associated with this tragedy. :(

Seriously. People might just stay home with their big screen TVs and Blu-ray players, IMAX and 3D be damned.

And yeah, a 70% drop cannot be described as anything less than devastating.

The second week dropoff will be indicative of how TDKR will perform in the upcoming weeks, and whether it will have legs or not.

WB is definitely going to curtail future dark realistic superhero movie projects. So will Disney.

I doubt that had anything to do with it. Blame falls on the gunman, and the gunman alone.

Yes and no. This tragedy will always be remembered but the film itself was incidental.

The tragedy is not going to define the film. As for whether people will still go the theaters?

Do people still go to schools, or office buildings, or anyplace else where there have been shootings? Of course they do.

The chance of dying in a movie theater is probably one in a billion the world will still go on.

Seriously doubt it. Darkness is everywhere in media and there is a reason for it. The only thing that will stop it is consumers.

You know I was just thinking about this. With all the flack that Batman Returns got over how dark and violent it was, and WB turned to Shumacker in response. I think this is going to be even more drastic.

I will tell you this, I pretty much can guarantee that all future Batman films will have Robin in them.

198 million sounds better though, and its the highest estimate i've heard.

But Batman had nothing to do with the shooter. He just chose the movie because the audience is huge unfortunately.

And where exactly is that logic coming from, Tony?

Guys, a deranged maniac went into a low-security movie theater packed full of people and wreaked havoc. As for referring to himself as The Joker, considering what movie those people died seeing, the deranged maniac most certainly used that alias as one last insult to his victims. Because he is a sick and twisted sub-human.

His crimes were not inspired by TDKR in particular. Dark superhero movies did not drive this man to kill people. A depraved mind did.

Darkness + fantasy is fine

But Darkness + realism = a tiny bit chance for a mental going to mimic it.

I highly doubt that, given now their biggest successes did not feature Robin. WB aren't dull enough to move away from a method that has worked well for them, that's why Man Of Steel looks like Superman Begins based on that teaser alone. I think this will certainly hurt a little at the box office this weekend just because people love to be paranoid, but reviews are positive in the majority and there's still home media sales for Christmas around the corner, as well as the inevitable trilogy box set.

No one stopped going to school after Columbine, no one stops going into banks because of gun-point bank robberies so why should people stop going to movie theaters? It's just ridiculous in and of itself that people associate this movie as the reason they may or may not be shot because of this madman's tirade. During the subway attacks in Europe, I didn't freak out anytime I stepped into one. It's a rare occurrence.

Yep, I wish everyone would realize this

Come on man this makes no sense at all and is very irresponsible. That guy was such a freak he probably would have done the same thing at a harry potter premiere had it been the next big one.

The guy started flunking out of school in mid may and started buying guns soon after. He knew TDKR would be the 1st perfect opportunity to pick a lot of people off. There is no connection to the films content none. Your comment just fuels fire for the media.

People are probably going to see the movie more because of this.
some People are just going to be fascinated with this movie because of the tragedy.
