I'm never good at finding these links. I'm pretty sure he said it in the Empire magazine coverage.

I remember him saying he chose Tom for Bane during Inception too.

I remember what Rag's saying too. The Empire article i'm pretty sure had Nolan saying he pretty much "always knew it was going to be Bane" from the wrapping up, or heck it might have even been the middle, of TDK. Someone's gonna have to find the direct quote.

it's all lies. He stole most of his story from mine.

Emma Thomas said they knew it would be Bane when they were filming Inception.

Combine that with Goyer saying, "I have a villain and theme" back in July 08, and we can pretty much surmise that sometime during TDK some preliminary discussions were had.

the way I remember it.

Nolan: Confesses he knew he wanted it to be Bane for TDKR during TDK time.

Thomas: Confessed she knew it would be Tom hardy during Inception time.

This. If only we could find the damn transcript  So bad at digging this stuff up.

Yeah, I remember Emma saying that they knew Bane would be the vilain during Inception. And I also remember Nolan saying that Goyer told him about Bane right after TDK, and that he didn't really know him. But that's about it. I would like to read the interview where Nolan said that he chose Bane since TDK.

And that's what I really like about the whole thing. They had a villain, and they had the perfect casting choice for him in mind way in advance. It could have been someone else in the role, since Tom had to star in Mad Max, but God bless the people who decided to delay that film, so Nolan can go ahead and pick Hardy for Bane. :woot:

EMPIRE January 2012 (Page 58):

Nolan and co-writer David Gorey had settled on Bane as the main villain three-and-a-half years earlier, when they first put the story together just after The Dark Knight's release.

Maybe, but let me correct you right here: he's the fat muffling midget who's gonna kick Batman's *** and beat the **** out of him. :cwink:

I don't remember Nolan saying the first part but I believe it's true. Nolan did say that it was Goyer who clued him in about Bane, and with Goyer saying he had a villain picked in 08, that gives us a rough timeline of when those conversations probably started. I'm fairly sure in retrospect that Goyer was referencing Bane and not Catwoman, because in a separate interview from around the same time, he and Jonah were talking about how vast the Batman rogues gallery is and that they don't feel like thery are walled into only doing the big-name ones.

Edit: Damn I'm slow on my phone lol. But yeah, that Empire excerpt says it all nice and simple.

Gorey :lmao: did bring the idea of Bane to Chris

http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2011...christopher-nolan-opens-up-about-bane-choice/

“I didn’t know [Bane] very well,” Nolan said. “David Goyer got me a bunch of stuff on him and we looked into him. I only knew him by name, I wasn’t familiar with his back story. He’s a very cool character. And getting an actor like Tom to take it on, you know you’re going to get something very special. Tom is somebody who really knows how to put character into every gesture, every aspect of his physicality in the way that great actors can. He’s a very, very physical actor. He transforms himself and it’s there in every movement. He’s not afraid to look at a character from the outside as well as the inside so there’s a deep psychological branch to the character but also a very, very specific awareness of how he’s going to use his body and his appearance to express that character too. Christian is like that too, very much.”
And this http://movies.ign.com/articles/121/1214486p1.html
IGN: I know you guys have worked with Tom on Inception so were you already thinking about Dark Knight Rises and Bane when you were doing Inception? Were you looking at Tom like, “Oh yeah. That’s our guy.” At what point in the process did you say, “Tom should be Bane”?

Thomas: We already knew that Bane was the villain when we were shooting Inception. And actually as we were shooting, we did talk about how, wow, Tom would be perfect for Bane. We talked about that pretty early on. The issue that we had was that Tom was going to be doing another movie. He was committed to be in Fury Road, and we knew he wasn’t available. So every conversation that we had about how Tom was perfect to be Bane was sort of tinged with regret because we knew he couldn’t be. So as soon as we found out that that movie had pushed we approached him.

da fat muffling midget who's gonna kick teh puffy batman's ass.

I do want to reread some of these articles. Is there not some place where they're archived? :argh:

Thanks for posting those, venus! I was just looking for them.

I like how Nolan compares Tom to Christian. They indeed have a lot of similarities when it comes to acting and their approach to the characters.

I wanna know what stuff on Bane that Goyer got for Nolan. Info like that would be awesome on extras and stuff for the BD/DVD.
