Finally catching up with everything...trying to collect all my thoughts.
-Definitely some nice eye candy in the new BvS trailer...more vibrant colors than MoS for sure and I like that.
-I agree that retconning Bruce into the battle of Metropolis was a good move as it immediately makes the stakes more personal. Appreciate the attention to detail of it being Zod's heat vision that knocks over the Wayne building.
- I REALLY like the bits with Martha Kent and Alfred. Love the way they're being written and performed. The real highlights of the trailer for me.
- Affleck seems pretty solid so far as Bruce. Is it just me, or does the delivery of "and we have to destroy him" sound JUST like Bale? I don't mean Bale's Bat-voice per se, just Bale's typical whispery "urgent" voice I guess. Stuck out immediately to me.
- Gadot looks good...but also a bit on the "cute" side as Wonder Woman. Not sure if I buy it yet.
-The movie seems very crowded. I'm calling it now, this will probably have a Watchmen-esque Director's Cut. And if that's true, also gonna call that a lot of the cut material will be the more Batman-centric stuff/flashbacks.
-The quick shots of Batman fighting look great (the desert stuff with the Superman army looks like a ridiculously badass scene) but I couldn't help but feel cheated by the blatantly obvious CG shot of Batman escaping with the grappling hook. It just bugs me, because we've seen countless shots in the previous films of Batman swinging with stunts and wirework. I totally get that CG is necessary in these movies, but to me there's no excuse when it's being used as a shortcut for things that could've been achieved in camera, at least on a green screen. So yeah, the action looking just like MoS's action is a downer for me, considering the visuals overall are an improvement. Even more underwhelming coming off that Star Wars behind the scenes video that showcase all the effort going into making that film feel tactile.
-Eisenberg's Lex...idk. I'm intrigued to see what the full performance will be so I'm reserving judgment, but I'm getting a whiff of "this might be comically bad" here. The last line was so awkward.
As for Suicide Squad...it's looking pretty great, I must say. I'm so excited for Robbie's performance, and I liked the glimpse we got of Leto. I think he's definitely taken a bit of inspiration from Ledger, but I've got no problem with that. It actually might've been a mistake to make a conscious effort to steer entirely away from it just to be different. Especially because Ledger's Joker had the punk rock vibe and think there's a similar sort of angle with Leto's. He definitely has a great smile. I think the a lot of the movie is just going to depend on the chemistry of the ensemble, which is hard to gauge from the trailer, but I'm feeling very encouraged.
Putting nitpicks and reservations with BvS aside, I think overall the DCU is definitely moving in the right direction to offer an alternative brand to Marvel while updating their product to reflect what the people want now. Both trailers seemed to strike the perfect balance in tone of dark/edgy and comic booky. It'll be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
