I just had a quick flick through. Supes didn't make the list. Not really surprised though since he hasn't had a decent movie since 1980. Considering his four successive movies since then range from bland to god awful, it wouldn't help his good name.

On a side note I am VERY happy to see Bill Finger's name being listed as one of the creators for both Batman and the Joker.

Its a shame, because Chris Reeve deserved to be on the list. But when your franchise has such a lousy track record, it makes sense. Its very telling that even though MOS came out 2 years ago, Superman still didn't make the list.

I'm glad to see Finger get credit too. I love that even a popular site like Wikipedia has him listed as a creator.

Jake Gyllenhaal was talking about how he'd play Batman: [YT]/watch?v=BRs1oRcmCAE[/YT]

Wasn't it finally between him and Bale for the role in 2004? He was certainly a fanboy favourite for Batman v Superman until Affleck was of course officially cast.

Based off his Nightcrawler performance alone, I can see him playing a great DC villain.

Jake in a DC movie would be amazing.

I was thinking the same thing. Personally MOS left me cold.

It's about time, too. He's the unsung genius behind Batman and many of his great villains.

While Batman and Superman are both tremendous, powerful icons in pop culture, Batman is a way more inherently cinematic character than Superman. He just is. I don't think it's just blind chance that Batman's had way more good movies and more success at the box office.

I don't think its blind chance either...I think its simply that WB has no idea how to make good Superman movies, and the only reason he even has two good ones is because of Richard Donner and Tom Mankiewicz.

Contrast that with the Batman franchise, where they actually hire people with the right sensibilities for the character.

Jake Gyllenhaal could've been our Batman? With Heath Ledger as the Joker?

That would've added a DEEPER layer for sure.

It would've been NUTS.

It would be awesome from TOP TO BOTTOM.

^ Good god that is disturbing!!!!!

I don't think he's more cinematic, but I do think Batman lends himself more to social commentary in a way Superman does not (at least in modern years). I would argue certain versions of Batman have become a better Superman than what's meant to be the actual Superman.

I've always maintained that Superman is just a very hard character to do well. It's the problem of creating viable stakes and audience connection with a character that is practically invincible and flawless. And even if you accomplish that it's hard to maintain story after story.

I think Superman is harder to write the more you try to ground him. Superman should be all out scifi crazyness. Grant Morrison understood this when he wrote All Star.

I guess what I mean is that when you look towards the history of film, the influences in Batman lend themselves to some very iconic, tried and true film genres- mystery, film noir, crime/gangster films etc., whereas Superman is more rooted in B-movie sci-fi territory. There's just a lot more inherent cheese with the character, whereas with Batman it's easier to get around that because it's darker material and very compatible with some very credible movie genres.

That's not to say it's impossible to make a good Superman movie, but I do think it's harder to make a good "serious" Superman movie.

The funny thing is, MoS was all out scifi craziness. It was easily the most "sci-fi" Superman movie yet, full of funky sci-fi-isms like the World Engine, Genesis Chamber, The Codex, etc. Jor-El rides a freakin' alien dragon for crying out loud. Sure, the tone is psuedo-"realism" a bit to give the world's reaction to the events more weight, but at the core it was a first contact/alien invasion movie, just set in a recognizable version of our world. That alone didn't make it good though.

Maybe it was merely an issue of having the right ideas and the execution faltering, but we still don't really have a modern reference for what a universally-loved Superman movie looks like. In other words, there's still no way to definitively say that even someone with the "right" sensibilities for the character would produce something that resonated with the majority of moviegoers and critics. That's just my theory, because I honestly think Superman simply doesn't have the same appeal to the GA as a lot of other superhero characters, regardless of how you dress it up. I think the idea of Superman is something that appeals to people, but translating that into a great film is a different story. Not impossible though, I just think it would take someone with a really strong vision. I heard some rumors that George Miller is being looked at by WB to possibly do the solo Supes sequel. Now that is something I'd be interested in.

No one said that making Superman all out crazy sci fi is the only thing you have to do to make a good Superman film. It should go without saying that execution is just as, if not more important.

If Superman didn't have the same level of appeal as other heroes, he would've fallen by the wayside already. To say people only like the idea of Superman is strange to me. Superman has consistently been one of the biggest and most popular Superheroes of all time. You don't become or stay that popular by people merely liking the idea of you. The problem isn't Superman's appeal, its that there hasn't been a good Superman film since 1980 (IMO), there's yet to be a good Superman video game, and he doesn't have the constant media push that Batman gets.
