I don't think this is quite a movie or tv question since this is more of an general obervation that i've noticed due to the release of the new star trek movie.

Do Trekkies as most people know them even exist anymore? I've heard people on and off this forum try to argue that the reason the theatres are so crowded for the new film is that trekkies are out in full force. Also, a lot of people are saying they're not going to the midnight or earlier shows because they "Don't want to be near the trekkies", etc.

First of all, do Trekkies even exist anymore? I'm sure there are still some SOMEWHERE but when is the last time you actually met one? If Trekkies were so powerful supposedly, why did Star Trek:Nemesis flop SO hard. Yes, it's not a very good movie but by many people's ideas Trekkies are such a huge fanbase that they can open and shutdown movies and...they just can't. Their numbers are miniscule. This movie is a success because tons of people who don't normally see Trek movies...saw it.

Also, what exactly IS wrong with being a Star Trek fan? Why is it such a stigma? How come nobody cares if you talk about comics, videogames, cartoons, anime, or even star wars in comparison. If you like batman, you like superheroes but if you like Star trek, YOU'RE A TREKKIE(SHAME ON YOU! YOU FREAK!).

I love Star Trek. I don't own everything related to it and I don't dress up during coventions or during movie premieres but I do love the property. I have about 2 dozen action figures, most of the movies, the original series on dvd, and an assorted mix of the next generation, deep space nine, voyager, and enterprise(mostly compilations). So for me, I'm a fan. But what really makes one a Trekkie and why are people more open about snorting coke and popping pills than how Kirk cheated on the koyabashi maru(or however you spell it lol)?

I agree with most of this. I'm one of those people who've never seen a single Star Trek film (minus a few episodes) and loved this new movie. I was thoroughly entertained.

To the first part....that's me:yay:

to the second...yes...they are all over at AICN and Trek BBS crying about how horrible the movie is and death to Abrams and all that

Will Trekkies hold it against me that I, as a non-fan of Star Trek, loved the movie? I know of some long running series *CoughDoctorWhoCough* which have seen a modern revamp and the oldschool fans seem to resent that new fans haven't appreciated it in the same way.

My point being, now that this Star Trek movie is considered 'cool', will this start a war between the Trekkies and the new fans? OR will Trekkies regain their proudness and wear their uniforms in public again?

1. Why don't you want to be near the trekkies? Do they smell? I've found that you can find smelly nerds of every nerd fandom.

2. People keep saying they hear trekkies saying the new movie is horrible but I just don't see it really. I've been to the aicn talkbacks and there's negativity but it almost seems like on that site that they hate EVERYTHING sometimes and there's nothing indicating the folks there that didn't like it are Trekkies. As for the folks here who don't like it, they're even rarer as I've seen very few posts of people here who didn't dig it.

I wonder what it's like right now on an actual star trek forum. Offtopic, why is there no Star Trek DK book? Or BSG for that matter?

hmmmm, public eh? Are the Trekkies in hiding?

I think they are/were. It used to be easy to spot one back in the 80s/90s, but around the time Enterprise was aired, they vanished. Probably traded it all in for some Elvish gear and Hobbit lovin'.

It's not the smell....it's the entitlement

DK book??

Because it sucked SO hard. Trekkies put up with 7 seasons of Star Trek Voyager, but they saw the first half hour of Nemesis and said "I CAN'T TAKE THIS ****!"

Problem is, poeple tend to think of Trek fans{and geeks in general} as the stereotypical nerdy loser who lives in his mother's basement and dresses up. This isn';t really the case{except for those really hardcore fans}. I just can't help but roll my eyes at people who think this.

and some of theme are scary. My mom knew a guy when she was younger that when they cancelled the original series went beserk and bashed his mom in the head with a brick. He was on LSD at the time, but I'm sure that didn't have anything to do with the attack.

Trekkies are still around. they are usually older, but they are still around. Trekkies are the original fanboys.

I've been a Trekkie for over 40 years....loved the movie.

Give this man a button.

I wanted to throw my little worthless two cents into something I couldn't help but notice around these parts that kinda irks me:Seems to me the preamble "Well, I'm not a trekkie but" Has started far too many sentences for my taste. I dont like it. Its like you're trying to tell me you're not a blind sheep who'll eat anything served at the troth of Trek.
"As a Christian,..." or "Well , as a Cannibal...."

I myself never wore another humans flesh as a mask, yet still enjoyed Silence of the Lambs,.. Strange I know.

Wow, just got back the IMDB boards. They are tearing this movie apart! Why can't people just be happy? The movie was really good, & I think they got all the characters right. Even Chekov's.

I really like how they have done the alternate reality stuff, because now Abrams can do whatever he wants with the series. Very clever me thinks.

I myself will never be a trekkie. My heart will always belong to the Sith/Jedi. But this movie wore a short skirt, tight top, & came pretty close to seducing me.

Trekkies or Trekkers aren't the same as we were many years ago. In the days of ST:TNG when new movies were coming out regularly and there was ALWAYS a new episode of some series of Star Trek on. Sometimes there were actually 2 series on at the same time!

Now what's happened after the poor reception of Star Trek: Enterprise and the time elapsed between series and movies is people have stopped having conventions. Actors have stopped attending conventions. Those who are still Trekkies have resigned their community activities completely to the internet and active "Real World" communities have died down as the number of Trekkies gets lower in each area.

What does Star Trek (the new movie) mean for Trekkies. Nothing. It will not generate Trekkies because Trekkies were part of a Real World community that had conventions and conferences and in person meetings and activities. That's not needed anymore we have the Internet. I think the resurgance of Trekkies will happen almost entirely online.

even as a nerd...I've always put Trekkies in their own special category

They pretty much are their own category.
