All shows feature extremely lovely women. That's just the Hollywood marketing machine at work. Viewers prefer pretty people in their entertainment. Even ugly people are just Hollywood-ugly, i.e. they'll wear their hair in an ugly way or have glasses but be otherwise gleaming models of perfection.

To me it seems like most American youth drama television is aimed primarily at females possibly because alot of them have soap opera vibes and women watch soap operas more than males.

chamber and spoons, california dreams. a saved by the bell type show from around the same time frame. they had a band and the only episode i remember involved smoking and the phrase "i can quit whenever i want" very after school special-y.
