Sorry it couldn't be something as highbrow as 'first'

Doug is by far one of the best cartoons Nickelodeon ever produced.

This was before Spongebob made being ******ed a fad?

I've never understood Nickelodeon. Avatar: The Last Airbender is proof that they can make epic cartoons with serious production values but they choose to go with crap like Spongebob as a flagship title.

I really liked Rocko's Modern Life. I think that was Nick.

Way before. This was in the early to mid 90's. Nickelodeons' golden era.

Look at it this way. It's far more expensive and time consuming to produce something at the level of Avatar, both with stories and animation. Spongebob, all you really need is a guy with enough weed to think of enough jokes to fill 17 minutes or so. And children will eat it up.

Eh, it's all a buncha boos**t. Every era says the same thing. This was the best era. People from the 80's say all their cartoons was the best with Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, and He-Man. Then people from the 90's say the same thing with the Disney shows like Darkwing Duck and Tail Spin or Duck Tails. This generation will revere Spongebob, Phineas and Ferb, and whatever else the kids all love. All I can say is, enjoy what you liked, but understand that at some point, your opinion will become irrelevant.

When I was younger, the Disney Channel was my my best friend and Filmore was a cool way of introducing kids to a detective style story.

Disney stuff will always have this special place in my heart.

Well you may be correct Anubis but all I can say is...SUPERDUDE!

Actually...I'm pretty sure they don't :o

I think I generally agree with you to a point, but the writing and such definitely improved a lot between the '90s and '80s. Mainly because it was finally being seen as an actual storytelling medium and not just a way to peddle toys (though they still peddle toys). I think the thing that makes this era lesser than the last in comparisons is that there's pretty much just fun gag shows. Which there's nothing wrong with since the '90s were filled with it, but there's less that really feel like fully developed shows like the DCAU shows and Gargoyles and such. The only one I can think of is Avatar.

Honestly, I never saw the appeal of All that. It's like Tyler Perry was writing their stuff. If I'm thinking about awesome sketch shows of the 90's, I'm going in Living Color.

Hahaha, ILC owned.

"Homey don't play that", **** yeah

While I agree that most of those shows were made to sell toys, a lot of the producers didn't realize just how much these characters meant to the viewers. Case in point, the infamous Optimus Prime death scene in the very first Transformers movie which shocked the hell out of me (and my dad). The backlash was incredible that Sunbow needed to change the planned death of Duke in the GI Joe movie to just a coma or something.

Ben 10 is a show that was made to sell toys but I actually enjoyed the first few seasons with younger Ben and Gwen rather than the grim, angst-ridden Ben 10 Alien Force.

That said, I saw Turtles Forever and was stunned at how goofy the 90s Ninja Turtles were as compared to the 2000 Turtles. I really didn't remember them being THAT light-hearted.

Well, yeah, I'm saying that they still don't make shows to peddle toys or anything. I mean, hell, I think 90% of animated shows are all about the toys, but I think the standard of writing has increased since people stopped looking at developing and writing their shows in that manner. And it seems to me that developed in the 90s with shows like Batman: TAS and Gargoyles and things of that nature. I'd sure they had their predecessors from the late '80s, and there's probably some expectations out there, but that seems to be were it started as a widespread thingy.

Optimus's death might not have gotten so much backlash if Rodimus hadn't been so lame.

EDIT: I mean they took the ballin' awesome sportscar character they'd just introduced, and turned him into a ****ing RV.

What the ****, Hasbro.

Well, yeah, they don't exactly stand the test of time, but, peoples love of them is no less.

I mean come on, Hasbro in 1986, just turn him into a monster truck.

You know who loved monster trucks in 1986? EVERYBODY, how the **** did you guys miss that one.

Speaking of Gargoyles, Disney still has the rights to them right? I had a friend who was thinking of pitching a Gargoyles/Ninja Turtles team-up story or something.

Gargoyles was a great show. The Biblical implications, the Lore, the dark settings...MacBeth...the show had everything needed to make in sexy without having to resort to T&A (though Demona was a hottie)
