Jake Gyllenhaal might have found his first comic-book movie role.

The Oscar-nominated actor is being eyed for Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel. He is in talks to play the villain Mysterio, joining Michael Keaton, who will return to reprise his role of Vulture.

Can a mod remove the extra "the" in the title? Oops..

Forgot to comment on this early but this makes me really happy. For all the flack I give/gave Homecoming, he was certainly a highlight and I'm very happy he'll be back.

I'm VERY happy to hear he's coming back. Maybe Mysterio breaks him and Gargan out of prison, but Toomes refuses to go back to crime or give away Spidey's identity, and has to get rescued? One thing I'd like to see them do in the long run is to turn Liz into their own version of Lady Beetle. I think there's room for Toomes to have a very powerful arc in this franchise.

Intriguing news.

In a weird way, I'd almost want this just a cameo. A large cameo, two or three big important scenes, but keep him in jail for now. Not sure we need Toomes out flying around causing trouble in a movie with a Mysterio focus.

Plus he came off genuine with the keeping-Pete's-identity-a-secret stuff, I can't see them going a route where he's holding all that over Pete's head trying to blackmail him or whatever.

It's possible Toomes could be an illusion, also. I assume we will get a post credits stinger for the S6, but as far as in the plot...possible Mysterio makes Peter see the Vulture.

I don't think Vulture is just gonna be making a cameo if we know that he's in the film this far in advance. Most MCU cameos are kept close to the chest. Doesn't mean he'll have a huge role or anything, but probably more than a cameo.

I'd like a scene between Toomes and Peter. Maybe Peter visits him in prison for info about Beck, and then at the end Toomes begrudgingly offers his gratitude for saving his and Liz's life.

Yeah, something like that would be perfect. Maybe even putting Pete in contact with someone with some potential information on the guy.

With Keaton, the more tends to be the better, but just feels like less is more in this instance.

When they grab their loot,they take it back to their lair where Tinkerer makes them some really cool stuff.

I don't like this idea, LOL! I don't want Toomes to be effectively the bad guy from prison. It should be Mysterio's movie. I'd rather Beck and Toomes are cell mates, he tells Beck about the Tinkerer and Spider-Man, and then he gets out, finds the Tinkerer and forces him to make him some illusion based tech so he can accomplish whatever goal he has in the movie.
