I just finished watching this movie for the second time.....and I've read the graphic novel 3 times.....

I dont think this movie got it's due. Except for the change of making Dr. Manhattan the the threat instead of the manufactured alien, this movie was about as accurate as you could get for the 2 hour limit.

All of the characters were like they jumped off the pages......

Reflecting back......what do you guys think??

I really want a sequel to this book and movie. Rorshach's journal published from the "crank files"? He get's his revenge.....Oz is brought to justice. Those that covered it up get theIr world torn apart......earth is on the brink AGAIN....

    Anyway.......opinions??

Watchmen, theatrical, director's and extended cuts, have always been in my top five favorite CBMs of all time. I honestly don't understand why it isn't quite popular to anyone outside of the comic book fanbase and what not because it's such a great film, imo.

The only change I'd have had, though, is I'd take out the so-awkward sex scene.

The music they played was definitely not appropriate....

I got the feeling that it wasnt even well received among comic book fans..........go figger.

    Rorshach was perfect!!!!

I'd argue that was sort of the point. A melancholic song for a sort of pathetic pair of has beens.

Watching the 4 hr cut tonight!

It seems like the only real way to watch this is how the graphic novel intended its audience to.

See, I kinda feel differently, especially around these forums...I've been hearing much more love towards the film, so I think the CB fanbase do enjoy the film, but then again...it's been years since the film's been out, maybe that appreciate has just grown over the years.

Pretty much this. The scene was as terrible as the song choice as the song choice was as terrible as the scene. It goes hand in hand.

I'm thinking of picking up the director's cut sometime, I've only seen the theatrical cut. I thought it was well done and actually enjoyed the change at the end. Which do you guys think is better, theatrical cut or director's cut?

Also, that sex scene was painful.

The complete film with Tales of the Black Freighter is the best option, then the Director's cut, then Theatrical.

The Director's Cut is the best superhero film ever made. Not a fan of the Ultimate Cut's pacing.

What was so painful about the sex scene? Other than the music...I thought it was kinda hot.

I have never scene the directors cut. What's on it?

It's just very uncomfortable and awkward to watch, at least to me.

    No idea.

Agreed. It's a LONG film, but gives the complete experience of it.

The sex scene is SUPPOSED to be awkward and a little sad.

And yes, it's kind of hot.

The first time they tried it on the couch was awkward....Dan couldn't get it going.

But after that fire rescue......he was ready Freddy. Didnt seem a bit awkward. And she suuuure knew what she was doing.

It didnt seem "sad" to me. They overcame their fear.

The sex isn't all that awkward...the nature of it is. The scene itself is supposed to be a little odd, a little off, a little fetishistic.

Yah....the only scene I don't care for at all in Watchmen.

Indeed. While the pacing feels a bit "off" with Tales of the Black Freighter being added into the product, the product itself just feels like the graphic novel albeit a different ending from the novel itself, but I prefer the change anyways with Dr. Manhattan being the "villain".

I seriously doubt it will happen now but the best way to do the book would have been as a 12-part HBO miniseries. Making the whole thing work as a single film of reasonable length and pace was and still is next to impossible. Snyder did his best and while he got some things right he got a whole lot wrong. It wasn't even close to being good enough.

I was so hyped for this movie. It's one of only 2 movies for which I've ever channeled my excitement into a making fan trailer, as Watchmen was, at the time, my favorite comic ever (it's still pretty high up there). But I just walked out of the theater so colossally disappointed. I hated how Snyder ratcheted up the violence to the point that gives the impression they all had some kind of super-strength, I hated most of the acting, the make-up, half of the music choices, the pacing....I just didn't like it. I loved exactly two parts: The opening credits and the Dr. Manhattan origin sequence. And ironically, one of the few things I didn't mind was the changed ending. The biggest change from the comic and I thought that worked fine. It was just, aside from those couple of inspired sequences, the whole affair felt totally stiff and soulless to me. After I walked out, so let down by such a slavishly faithful (for the most part) adaptation, I couldn't help but think, "maybe Terry Gilliam was right and it truly was unfilmable." I don't know, it just didn't work as a whole for me.

maybe i need to watch it again, as i haven't watched it in years , but i think snyder stylized and "glamourized " it way too much . it didn't give me the same sort of feel i got when reading the graphic novel, even if alot of it is straight from the comic, a movie based on that book should NOT look like 300 and have slow motion beatdowns every 5 seconds. bottom line. jackie earle haley as rorschach was great though.

also, MCR is great and all, but it would've been better off if the original bob dylan version of desolation row was used at the end. just my opinion.

Happy, I haven't read the book in a while - but how much is truly missing from the unlimited cut? From my memory it is practically the ENTIRE graphic novel page by page and shot for shot. So I'd call a "completely faithful" reboot way too much at this point since I'm pretty sure that's exactly what Snyder did. Also HBO could never afford to do it.

The Ultimate Cut doesn't have all the Malcom Long stuff and some of the other subplots from the graphic novel. It was never going to be a "complete" adaption. But it's the best superhero adaption we've gotten, easily.

Crudup's performance as Manhattan was my fav. even tho i love jeh as Rorschach

billy was able to make a character who is emotionally disconnected from humanity not feel boring very hard thing to pull off

I agree with everything you said. My least favorite part is the action scenes - all of them. But the rest of the movie was very well done and very faithful to the story.

    Agreed

I really loved everyone's performance in that film, especially Haley's Rorschach, Morgan's Comedian and Crudup's Manhattan.
