BvS The Wonder Woman Costume Thread - Part 9

Your opinion on the new Wonder Woman costume?

  • Love it! This is the outfit from livescreen I wished for

  • Good. Expected something else.

  • Don't like it.

Meh. To me, it looks like a transvestite viking who is anachronistically wearing some of 2012's wet-look leggings.

Generally I don't care much for the details... it's more about the general concept. And for the female Thor it followed a similar design to the original Thor. Like it should be. Like it is with Bitgirl or Batwoman...

With the opposite being something like Supergirl, or Fury from Earth 2. Both which I consider to be terrible.

While I'm not a big fan of the female Thor costume, I like that they resisted the temptation to have her show a lot of skin, which is a method sometimes used in comics to denote "female" (highly unfortunate). Supergirl and power girl are examples of that.

It's actually impressive how unsatisfying almost all of Supergirl's costumes have been.

Anyway: Wonder Woman's costume is actually pretty easy to fix. You only need to make fairly minor adjustments.

True, and most of those are to the lower half.

Indeed.

I like Supergirl's costume from her last two appearances on JLU. In that it's basically Kara's original costume. No midriff showing, no ultra short skirt, no ultrat tight crotch hugging, bare legged one piece.

Which brings me to the biggest problem of the classic WW suit as it pertains to both live action and artist renditions. There have been ways to show the classic suit without it being to over the top in sexualizing WW. But let's be honest, the last twenty years they've taken it upon themselves at DC to play up the cheesecake big time with almost all the female characters. The reinterpretation of Supergirl has been the most grievous of them all. With WW they can't seem to help take it to the extreme too often, by making the suit and excuse to show it tightly running through her crotch and the crack of her buttocks, as cleavage overflows from her top. Looking at Lynda Carter you never see the suit in such a way. And there's the meat of it... I wouldn't trust Hollywood to adapt the classic suit to be anything but a skimpy nothing these days so I will be happy if they decide that the traditional look has to go the way of Superman's live action trunks. But, as with Cavill's suit, I think a costume that screams WW can be done while deviating from the traditional look.

I wish I thought that a live action WW suit done in the classic style would come off like Perez or Bolland in real life. I just think there's a greater chance it would just be Ed Benes.

Jesus the hype hates every female costume that shows skin, its really weird.

It's not the fault of the people here that the majority is terrible. There is nothing inherent wrong with showing skin, quite the opposite. This has been said many times and I'd like that it doesn't get confused.

I'll go with the Faora/Supergil example again because it's extremely precise. Faora dressed like this in MoS:

Obivously she did. She was a soldier, she was armored just like all other soldiers.

Now let's say she dresses something closer to this:

Would it make sense? Would it be ok? I'd say no.

Yeah, I think people forget the most important aspect of these complaints about "too much skin." It's about the situation in which the skin is shown. I don't care if people show skin on the beach, in magazines or wear shorts in hot weather. It bothers me when female characters wear bathing suits, lingerie-inspired get-ups, or show their bare bellies when they are supposed to be superheroes/warriors, who are out there working to save people, fighting, and risking their own lives. Overly skimpy clothes do not make sense in those scenarios. No one needs to see ass cheeks and half of your breasts while you're pulling them out of some rubble. That doesn't mean everything needs to be covered either. Just be reasonable.

And yes, I know I've said it before, but people don't seem to get it and hence these "why do people hate when women show any skin?" remarks.

But, but, but Wonder Woman has super-powers, so she doesn't need to have her skin covered for any practical purpose. Wonder Woman could fight evil-doers nude just as effectively as if she was wearing a full suit of armour.

Also, as an equalist, Wonder Woman is a champion for a woman's right to expose herself in public without being threatened by men. Wonder Woman is also a champion for a woman's right to be sexy in any situation, whether they're a super-model, secretary or super-hero.

Wonder Woman is free to express herself by wearing a teeny-tiny Australian flag as a one-piece bathing suit if she chooses to do so and anyone saying otherwise has simply been brainwashed by centures of patricarchy!

Also, as anyone who has watched Xena: Warrior Princess can attest, a reasonable Roman/Grecian inspired armour looks ridiculous in live-action and any sex appeal associated with a woman dress in a skin-tight leather mini-dress and boots is immediately nullified by the fact that her stomach, ass-cheeks and breasts were not readily visible!

You're just pulling my leg, right? Not sure if serious...

I think he is. Sounds a bit too ridiculous to be serious...

I think so too. He seems to be poking fun at some of the excuses people make for skimpy costumes. The sarcasm smiley would be useful though. :oldrazz:

There is more sarcasm in that post then there is in a place with a lot of sarcasm.
