John Stewart pulled the collar of his heavy coat up around his chin. The wind was coming in and their was a cold chill in the air. His breath misted in front of his face as he made his way down the street. Across the road from him a bunch of kids, wearing the colours of the gang they belonged to loitered around an old chevy pumping out a HipHop track through it's tinny speakers John had never heard before.
Further down the road a basketball hopped its way across his path. As it bounced into the path of an oncoming garbage truck, John pointed towards it and by sheer power of will, a green hand stretched out and retrieved the ball before it was crushed under tyre. John took the ball and turned to look for its owner.
A young voice called to him from a small concrete basketball arena set between two of the streets apartment blocks. A throwback to the days of Johns youth.
"Hey man! sling that thing over here wouldya?"
John smiled and threw the ball, aiming for three points and scoring none as the ball rang off the hoop rim.
"Unlucky dawg!" the kid chuckled.
"Yer skills have gotten rusty with age Johnny". Came a voice from behind.
John spun on his heel and found himself staring into the face of a small man. Only two people had ever called him Johnny and this old man could only be one of those two. His face wrinkled under his flat cap, but his eyes the same deep brown that John remembered from his youth.
"Mr Cooper?!" John exclaimed as his old gym teacher stood there with his hands on his hips.
"Aww, it's just Jim nowadays Johnny, my 'Mr Cooper' days ended when I retired six years ago. Ain't seen you around these parts for a long time now Johnny, thought you were all about spacemen and aliens n' stuff now?"
John smiled and nodded.
"Yeah, I am pretty much. I've taken extended shore leave from the Corps and thought it was time to come home and visit the old hood".
"Heh. Well I can tell ya that things never change around these parts kid. Just how some like it".
John nodded and looked around.
"Yeah, you know, I've travelled to distant galaxies, seen hundreds of different species and things that most people only imagine in their wildest dreams. But you know what Mr Coop? Right here, on these streets, this is home. This is where I belong".
Jim Cooper laughed and nodded in agreement.
"Yeah, spent damn near my whole life here and if I'm honest, I'll probably die here too. Home is home though and I'd have it no other way". Jim took his cap off and ran a hain trough short silvered hair before replacing it.
"So yer goin' to be hangin' round for a while? I know a bunch of kids I do classes with down in the community hall that'd love to meet a bonafide superhero".
John rested a hand on his old mentors shoulder and smiled softly.
"I'd love to Mr Coop, I'd absolutely love to".
