The Xbox One - Part 6

I am reading that some games on the PS4 (digital) will not let you play offline. Though that's just from a forum, so not sure how accurate that is. Apparently the lock out was left up the developer.

The lack of information on this topic makes me think it's a minor issue.

Yea its never a persistent thing, it just happens when I first boot up my system and I try to go into a game immediately. For the One i get some message and for the PS4 there is just a small Lock icon on the games cover. I was under the impression that was some sort of digital DRM thing.
No sir. PS4 was never doing it - Xbox WAS and then they completely reversed it. You've probably just got some sort of network difficulties. If the console thinks you are connected to the internet, it will ALWAYS check for updates to the game, but if you're not connected to a server and in offline mode, it'll completely skip that step.

Because of my – and 30 million other people's – *****ing! The system works.

Im not sure what it is but there have been multiple instances where my X1 didnt think I was connected(meaning my pins weren't showing up etc) and the system would not let me access ANY of my digital titles and for the PS4, theres just a small lock icon on the games cover, which prevents me from starting the game up until the system catches up. Maybe this is what you were talking about, the updates and what not, but I just know theres been a few times I was locked out of my games, even if it was for a short period of time.

Can't comment much on the PS4. I know with Xbox if you are connected to the modem but not the internet it can get screwy. Next time that happens, try going into offline mode (disconnect from live and forget password), see if you can access it then.

I just checked, I went ahead and disconnected my One from the internet, and when I go to play a game I get this message:

Do you own this game or app? If you have a game disc, insert it now. If theres no disc, make sure you're signed in to Xbox Live. If you don't have the rights for playing it, you'll need to try it or buy it at the Xbox Store.

None of my digital titles will play.

From the Xbone forum (courtesy of Maxen13):

"Did you used to have another Xbox One, or at least used your profile on another one before this?

Either way, the reason appears to me to be that you have another console set as your Home. The default is the first one you logged into. The solution for this is:

Connect to Xbox Live. Go to Settings, then in the left-hand column select "My Home Xbox". Go through the steps to make this your Home Xbox. Your downloads should now work even offline."

No, my current xbox is the one set as my primary and there's no other accounts associated with my current X1. All I did was disconnect my X1 from my internet and suddenly I can't play any of my digital titles.

This seems like DRM to me.

Edit. I just checked and it looks like my Xbox wasn't set as "My Home Xbox". I thought I had enabled that some time ago, must have been reset during an update or something

Can you play your games offline now?

I havent checked. Ill try today when I get home to see if thats what the issue was.

Outside of when I first boot up the system, I haven't had that issue save for like once, so it hasn't been too big a deal, but when I first noticed it, it did raise an eyebrow.

Its Seagate. They tend to be cheap bc their quality has declined significantly in recent years and have been reported to have the highest failure rate of the major brands. Link. I had 2 of their 3tb models fail on me within 9 months (the second with 3). Avoid unless you want to turn on your system to corrupted data a year from now

I won't touch a seagate ever again. I've had two HD fail on me, and all the data got corrupted. Never again!

The reviews on there do say that the majority of the complaints for bad drives have been with the 3 TB models. I was just hoping with over 2000 reviews that it would be ok. Maybe I'll cancel the order.

I canceled my order and will continue to hold out for the 4 TB Western Digital EHD like I planned.

Oh so MS recommends Seagate? Does MS own them or something? Cuz yea, I wouldn't wanna go that route if they have such a high failure rate.

Cool to know. Ill look into those when it comes time to add more space.

The 4 TB Seagate drive only had a 4% failure rate on that chart posted earlier but I'd be more comfortable with a Western Digital since I already have 2 other drives by them with no issues.
