The Xbox One - Part 7

external but its all the same as Seagate externals are simply their internals in an enclosure. You can open them up and its the same model number as their internal line

ah. I see. thanks.

so, for the PS3/PS4, you can replace the internal drive and that won't void the manufacturer's warranty. But, how would that affect an extended warranty you get from the store ( like a Geek Squad plan )?

would replacing the hdd void the store's extended warranty?

also, do you think it's possible MS could release an update that allows you to run the X1 entirely off of an external drive?

so, you can load your profile, the OS, your games, apps, and save files all on the external drive instead of the internal drive.

do you think that's possible?

No clue. You'd have to check with the actual retailer in that event. Different stores might have different provisions for modifications

No. Why would you or anyone want that? Anything happens to the connection and that's just asking for catastrophic errors. The external is meant as a supplement, not replacement

hmmmmm..............good point.

but if the internal drive goes poof.......then you'd have to send in the whole thing for replacement.

do you think MS could just change their policy on the warranty voiding and remove that policy? thus allowing people to upgrade their drives if they choose, at their own risk.

oh, and from my understanding, in order to use an external drive with the X1, you have to format it first, and that makes it usable only with the X1. yes?

so that means you can't use it with a PC?

I don't have an X1 but its my understanding that its not built for one to open it up and replace the HDD. Its not like you can just slip it out and swap like with a PS4. It takes a bit more work and they probably wont change their policies on this for risk of users messing up their systems, which leaves MS liable to pay to repair/replace it. They'd be losing tons of money if they did this. Now they could release a model in the future that reconfigures the internal layout to allow this but don't expect anything with the current one

Q: Can I use my external storage device with my PC as well as my Xbox One?
A: No. The external storage device will be formatted for use by the Xbox One console only. PCs won’t recognize the drive partition created by the Xbox One.

That wouldn't work. You have to literally take the Xbox apart to get to the hard drive. If every guy did that, you would have thousands of stripped screws, broken pieces of plastic, frayed cables, etc. And then they would all want Microsoft to fix it for free.

true.....

so, basically, only through a future redesign could we get a replaceable and easily accessible hdd.

shame that wasn't part of the original design.

did any of the 360 models not have a replaceable HD and all were proprietary?

not sure. I think all of them did have replaceable, proprietary hdds.

but, I only own the 120 GB Elite version, so I don't know about the models before or after.

I think the later Slim and E models did have their own replaceable hdds.

So, anyone know much about this D4 game that just released? I haven't heard of it, but apparently it's getting some solid buzz.

I imagine it was the DRM stuff. They didn't want people to have easy access to it.

Making a HDD inaccessible for no good reason would be pretty stupid. Hell, even now it must be rather annoying for the warranty people who are fixing them.

yeah.....it was probably related to the DRM stuff.

something about a detective trying to solve his wife's murder or something......

Yeah, some type of time travel is involved. Apparently, it was going to be designed as a Kinect title but got delayed to add in controller use, and it got stealth released this week with little notice. Got a cool cell-shaded look to it.

think it's supposed to be one of those "quirky/weird" titles.

is it digital only?

Yeah, it's digital only, but it's episodic like the Telltale games, I believe, so it'll probably get some type of physical collection at some point in time maybe.

so, are Avatars still used on the X1?

can you customize your Avatar's look and go to the store to buy "premium" styles like you could on the 360?

Yeah, I think so, but they aren't displayed on the home page or on the friends list anymore. I know you can make gamerpics out of them, though, so they're still there. I don't know, haven't messed around with them, never cared much for avatars.

ah. thanks.

so, how are you liking your X1 so far? is the experience still pretty good?

does the system and UI perform fairly fast and stable?

Yeah, after I starting using the wire everything is fine. I do have occasional hiccups like when I sign in it won't let me the first time, or my friends list or acheivements won't load the first time I pull it up. But it only takes one refresh to fix usually.

that's good to hear!

and that's interesting to hear about the wired setup fixing the issue you had at the start.

I wonder if I will run into any problems, because I have to go wireless with my consoles ( since my router is located in an entirely different room than my game consoles ).

well, hopefully sometimes in the future, I can rejoin you as a fellow X1 owner! I just think I jumped the gun too soon......lol

I'm wireless, and I'm fine with my X1, 360, Wii, Wii U, PS3 and 3DS.
