With higher demand and restricted supply you price higher to maximise profits. If you raise price enough there won't be a supply shortage any more. And after supply/demand come into sync you can adjust price down to the new equilibrium. They could have sold the same amount at $500 as at $400 with the crazy mismatch of supply and demand and made an extra however many million times $100 of pure profit. 10 million units would mean $1B (the company is only worth $20B altogether) for eg.
but they didn't though. they just stayed sold out just like every new console does at the beginning of a generation. as far as sony pricing the Ps4 way cheaper than they needed to, essentially the Ps4 and the xbone are the same, the Ps4 has slightly better hardware that equates to overall 50% more raw computing power, but if the difference was that drastic we would see bigger differences in practice.
Most multiplat games run better on the Ps4 but lately with the parity issues and what not things are much more even, and Ps4 exclusives (aside from what we've seen in the Uc4 trailer) don't look substantially better than xbone exclusives.
ah, i don't even know why i'm rambling about this crap now
