The Xbox One - Part 8

With higher demand and restricted supply you price higher to maximise profits. If you raise price enough there won't be a supply shortage any more. And after supply/demand come into sync you can adjust price down to the new equilibrium. They could have sold the same amount at $500 as at $400 with the crazy mismatch of supply and demand and made an extra however many million times $100 of pure profit. 10 million units would mean $1B (the company is only worth $20B altogether) for eg.

but they didn't though. they just stayed sold out just like every new console does at the beginning of a generation. as far as sony pricing the Ps4 way cheaper than they needed to, essentially the Ps4 and the xbone are the same, the Ps4 has slightly better hardware that equates to overall 50% more raw computing power, but if the difference was that drastic we would see bigger differences in practice.

Most multiplat games run better on the Ps4 but lately with the parity issues and what not things are much more even, and Ps4 exclusives (aside from what we've seen in the Uc4 trailer) don't look substantially better than xbone exclusives.

ah, i don't even know why i'm rambling about this crap now

As of Today.. halo is sold out at my local target. That's pretty impressive.

"The PS4 has outsold the Xbox One for nine consecutive months with a total of 13.5 million units, but Microsoft hints that Sony's winning streak might be coming to an end soon."

10 million units shipped. I told y'all the race was closer than you thought.

Good!!

although some will quibble that MS is reporting units "shipped" ( sold to retailers ), whereas Sony has been reporting units sold to consumers.

however, in Sony's latest report, there was conflicting reporting on whether the new PS4 numbers were units sold or units shipped. Some sites said sold and others said shipped.

I found that a bit curious, cuz it seemed they always seemed to emphasize how the PS4 sales #s were for units sold, and then all of a sudden they start using the term shipped just like MS has been doing.

But, I would think, if the X1 has indeed shipped or sold to retailers 10m units, then the actual sales to consumers # shouldn't be that far behind.

I really don't give a ****. If you like the system, just keep playing.

Even if it is just "shipped" obviously retailers wouldn't continue bringing in xbones if people weren't buying em.

the gap is closer than y'all thought

exactly.

I really hope this marks the tide change and sales of the 2 consoles become much more even paced, regardless of who's in the top position.

neogaf's peeps got some interesting things to say. some think ps4 is still winning holiday 2014, but i'd say most say it's pretty obvious the xbone won.

honestly though, it's pretty pathetic how many price cuts they had to make in one year just to try to beat the Ps4. it's not like they HAD to beat the Ps4; the xbone's sales weren't bad at all, I'm sure they were making profit even when the kinect was still bundled, and it was selling better than the 360 in this timeframe; they're just so desperate to BEAT the Ps4.

It's not like the Ps3 where their price tag was making them have dangerously low sales; they HAD to cut the price. microsoft didn't have to, they just want to have the lead. at least that's what it looks like to me

hey. as a consumer, I'm not complaining about the price cuts and sales. :o

hey... as a consumer and long time follower of video game trends, i have to ask myself why the company who had the most expensive console of this gen made it the cheapest in relation to its direct competitor in a year, you know

because they were behind and wanted to boost sales.

it was a mistake for them to force bundle Kinect at the higher price point in the 1st place. Kinect should have been optional and there should have been a cheaper Kinectless bundle available at launch/holidays last year. That was a costly mistake.

whether or not this tactic was pathetic or desperate remains to be seen.

if it manages to turn the tide, then, even though it was a bit desperate, the tactic worked. sometimes hail mary plays work.

however, if it still fails to boost sales significantly and create sustained momentum for next year's sales, then yes.....the tactic would come across as pathetic.

of course, as a new X1 owner who wants to give the console a chance, I'm hoping that last scenario is not the case.

As a X1 supporter, I kind of love how COD AW and Unity run better on the X1 then PS4. It's starting to begin...the real next gen war. The Underdog is finally starting to throw some punches. It's Rocky vs Apollo.

just because they were behind doesn't mean they were failing though

I wouldn't even say bundling the kinect was a mistake. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like the kinect and what it can do, minus the whole 'always on, always watching' thing.

when you mention "next gen" at this point, it means Ps5/Xbox Two. The new gen is here, it has been a year, and the whole thing with asscreed unity has been a pretty big mess. reviews for the game haven't been so stellar and there's been a ton of controversy behind it all.

regardless... look forward to the rest of the year

and that's an important distinction, despite what all the Sony "fanboy trolls" and doom and gloom spin articles say ( saying the X1 is doomed or a lost cause, etc. ).

if the 10m shipped ( sold to retailers ) is true, and the actual sales to customer #s aren't too far behind, that's a pretty respectable #.

and the Kinect bundle wasn't the problem. it was the lack of a cheaper, Kinectless bundle that was the mistake.

I think it is because people are trying to label microsofts position as the same as Sonys back in the beginning of last gen when the realize is, sony was in a way worse position in the beginning of last gen than Microsoft is now. When don't was behind with the PS3 they kinda were failing. That is the distinction. Thank god they were able to bounce back.

And you right... I think it is likely that sales would've been way closer or even going back n forth, had the xbone had a 4 block option at launch next to the 5 block

some sites are still reporting that the # of X1s sold ( to consumers I guess ) is 6m vs. 12m PS4.

like this post made just yesterday ( based on October #s ):

http://www.vgchartz.com/article/252...etime-salesoctober-2014-updateps4-lead-grows/

somehow, given the numbers from MS yesterday, that 6.3m lifetime "sold" number seems kind of low. it seems unlikely that 3-4m units would be sitting on retailer shelves waiting to be sold to customers.

anyways, don't the October NPD numbers come out today?

It's going to be funny to see how those Song trolls act when the PS4 hits market saturation.. Which will happen. I suspect the XB1 to outsell the PS4 through November and December.

^yep. I've been saying/thinking that, too. At some point, the PS4 will hit market saturation and the sales will start to level off.

Take that with a grain of salt, x. Whatever the numbers are now, we really should just pay attention after New Years, when Christmas is all said and done.

And yes, npd numbs come out today and I'm pretty sure the Ps4 won again, it would make sense for Microsoft pr to announce this, right ahead of October's npd numbs.

Eh, well there's a reason the xbox and GameCube and even dreamcast for that matter couldn't even touch the Ps2. But I agree that Microsoft has this Christmas in the bag.

many people speculated that the price cut of unbundling the kinect would've been that time, but it wasn't. At some point the Ps4's momentum will cease, but we still don't really know when that will be. Every generation since the 5th, there's always been a clear winner (except perhaps the most recent) and that's always because one platform becomes the most dominant. But that doesn't mean the competition failed/didn't do it's part or did bad at all.

I'm not sure the X1 taking christmas is a given. Just from my own personal retail professional experience, I'm seeing just about as much demand for the PS4 as I am the X1.

I think Halo will sell Xboes (the Beta for 5 alone will) and I believe GTAV will sell better on the One. PS4 bundle or not. Destiny was more or less marketed as a Sony game... And the single game by itself sold more on the One.

PS: My iPhone hates my fingers and I'm too lazy to fix the mistakes. :p

Destiny did better worldwide on the PS4. It appeared to do better on the X1 in NA in September bc NPD doesn't count bundles and of course digital sales also aren't tracked. You really think GTA V will sell better on the X1? I don't see that happening. If anything those bundles may skew the numbers again (especially with it being the BF promo), but I think overall the numbers will be higher on the PS4

I think GTAV will do better on the PS4, because there's more PS4's in more households, and there's not as many AAA titles for the system. So I can see more PS4 owners picking it up, as apposed to X1 owners who have more to choose from at the moment.
