The thing that's annoying about it is, why not just make her MJ then from the start? Why is she Michelle with this pseudo MJ nickname. Now we are gonna transform her from Michelle to Mary Jane Watson because her friends call her MJ? Characters like this shouldn't be going through some transformation it makes no sense. Watch next movie we will get an amateur online blog writer named Jake but his friends call him JJJ, thus begins the transformation of Jameson

actually no... we have no idea what's happening with her... people don't go from "Michelle to Mary Jane" but it sounds like she wants to have the initials.

and from the reviews, it seems "Michelle" is getting universal praise as a character. So why not just let her be that original character?

and it sounds like Michelle isn't even in the film very much, and the big "twist" is tacked on at the very end in an almost blink and you'll miss it moment.

so it just begs the question, why??

why potentially piss off MJ fans? And why interfere with Michelle as her own character?

But this thread is about this spidey movie, as was my post, which you responded to. Hence, my saying it doesn't matter what we want at this point. But feel free to continue complaining and pushing for what you want to see in the future. I never objected to that.

Iron Man 3 shows if enough whine about it MARVEL is willing to change some things around as it is MARVEL that set this precedent & after this character back fires on them there are plenty of things MARVEL can do to either change her or get rid of her all together right down to completely ignoring the fact she said call me MJ & she is never mentioned as MJ again. They can even go as far as send her to Sonys universe & Sony can keep her it will be interesting to follow this moving forward

the frustrating thing is that we don't actually know. i am no fan of this michelle/mj hybrid, but if it was 100% confirmed that they mean for her to be this universe's only and only mj i could accept it and learn to live with it.

but at this point we don't know if she's going to be the real mj and grow into the character we know from the comics, if she's going to be a hybrid, if it was just a throwaway line as an easter egg, or whatever else.

I'm sorry but much of this sounds like wishful thinking. The character, regardless of who she turns out to be, seems to have always won over a lot of people who've seen the movie. And if that holds (no reason to think it won't), it gives Feige and Watts even more room to explore whatever they have planned. I guess there's a chance they could just drop the MJ reference, which I think is more likely than anything else you mentioned, but I'd be surprised if they even did that. I mean, given the way they did it and considering the actress is said to have a bigger role in the sequel, I suspect it's something they'll expand on more, not just completely drop it.

I don't think it matters. Your IM3 comparison would hold more weight if we were already seeing a notable backlash but from I've seen, the criticism seems mostly confined to forums like this one. Heck, there's been so little mainstream rumbling, that we can only hope at least one journalist will ask Feige/Watts why they chose to this MJ twist. Like I said several times now, I think we deserve an answer but I'm not sure we'll get it any time soon.

I'm not a comic book reader but I understand the annoyance and disappointment when your fav characters aren't portrayed accurately as in the source materials. But honestly I think that you can just consider that MJ line as a nod to comic book MJ, and Michelle will almost be an original character they build from scratch a la Jane Foster. And if Zendaya and Tom have little chemistry then they'll definitely give him new love interest in the 3rd movie like what they did to Jane and Thor.

This either means one of two things.

1. She'll end up being Peter's love interest through high school, but nothing more than a red herring to the actual MJ.

2. They changed the name "Jane" to "Jones" for another godforsaken reason. Again, she'd become more Mary Jane In-Name-Only.

Suffice to say, the second one being more likely doesn't bode well for me.
