Singer Says Superman Was a Real Eyeful
EXCLUSIVE!!

[Posted by Borys Kit]

Talk about eye-poppin.’

One of the most talked about sequences from Superman Returns will surely be the scene in which Superman stops a bank robbery in progress. (Spoiler Alert!) The action climaxes with a thief pulling out a gun and shooting Superman...right in the eye! Sure, hindsight is 20-20, but that high stakes moment almost didn’t make it into the movie.

Bryan Singer had to fight hard, super-hero hard, to get that scene into his film. Sources say the studio balked because the scene was expensive and because they found it a little too graphic. Execs also worried that it could raise red flags with the MPAA. After all, Superman gets shot...right in the eye!

At the Hollywood premiere Wednesday night, Singer admitted that the scene wasn’t originally budgeted and getting it in required an impassioned argument: “Look, in one scene we can see him be faster than a speeding bullet and we can truly see how impervious he is. And how every molecule in his body is more than steel. I made a plea in the middle of production and graciously Warner Bros. kicked in some extra cash.”

And just how much extra cash?

“Uh, about $2.3 million. It’s all about that shot.”

Right in the eye!

Singer also said part of the genesis of the scene — which includes the bank robber firing tracer bullets from a giant machine gun on the cops and Superman — came from writer Mike Dougherty’s father.

“Mike’s dad sent us a film of a military demonstration of these amazing tracers and I was like, ‘Wow, we need to see that.’”

$2.3 million for that shot??? No wonder the budget went through the roof.

I personally am not that impressed by that shot. It just seems very Matrix like.

The whole scene is pointless! I mean this is not Superman 1 when nobody knows the extent of his powers.. This is a sequel to S1 & 2, and everyone, and their grandmother knows in this world he's in that he's the man of steel, and that bullets just bounce off him... So why would they shoot him with a machine gun or in the eyes or shoot him at all?
DUH it's SUPERMAN! Thats just stupid script writing IMO...

The shot looks so freaken cool, and I'm glad that it's in there, but there's nothing impressive about it at all... it's easily done...

duplicate it then :D

i think that shot is cool, shows how invincible superman really is.

It's a good shot, it's not useless at all. Whoever thinks that needs to re-evalutate themselves on how storytelling works. The eye is one of the most delicate parts of the human body and this shows how indestructable Superman really is...........

Seems to me it's one of this movie's trademark shots, glad it got made.

So will shot be in the movie???
no Cinemaman, they spent $2 million on making the shot just so they can show it tv spots and trailers and leave it out of the movie....

...i was being sarcastic btw. c'mon dude, use your brain.

Superman surviving a Nuclear Bomb detonation at ground zero would have been MUCH more impressive...if you ask me. Maybe have a terrorist with a nuclear suit case bomb, and Supes sees it with his X-RAY vision and grabs it but does not have enough time to fly it out into space, so he plows straight under ground, or into a mountain...and BOOM!!! Nuclear explosion at ground zero for Supes!!!

Plus the FX would have been EXTREMELY cool...to show how everything around him gets turned into ASH or molten liquid, yet he comes out completely un touched...maybe have a few rips on his costume and a tathered cape, dirt on his face, but have him act as if it was nothing!!! That would have been totally insane!!! A true deomstration of Superman's power level...

I wonder how much that would have cost! 20 million maybe!!!

Or maybe, during the return trip from Krypton exploration, his ship gets pulled into a Black Hole, so he has to eject and fly out of it...showing how he can withstand the gravitational forces of a BLACK HOLE!!! OR, maybe have a STAR EXPLODE, go Super Nova, while he is near it...and he comes out completely un harmed! THAT is how powerful SUPES should be!!!

2.3 Mil? that scene really is a Money $hot

but i think its worth the extra expense. its definitely gonna be one of the most memorable scenes from the whole movie

I don't think the scene is pointless, people would still want to see superman getting shot at... here, Singer upped the ante by using chain guns, and shooting him not only in the chest, but at a very delicate part of the body, which is the eye...

you have to remember that this is the first superman movie in 19 years, not everyone saw the original movies, and besides, he wasn't even really shot at in Supes 2-4... at least none that I recall of...

in the context of the story, well I haven't seen the movie yet, but if you are the bank robber, you will try everything, even if that's superman you are shooting... if superman were real and came face to face with a robber, I'm pretty sure they'd shoot him as well, and maybe even try to punch him if they had no more bullets left... :);)

In the sequel we'll see Supes take a nutshot, just to settle THAT age-old question.

okay, true we all know he's bulletproof, but it's still cool to see him get shot . . . especially with today's effects . . .

I would also like to see a bullet bounce off his hair . . . . but like; what kind of comb would he use?

Wrong!

No one has ever shot him in the eyes before in the history of Superman so how was that thug supposed to know it wouldnt hurt him?

He thought the eye was a vulnerable spot to get him...........clearly he was mistaken.

That makes me think of the Reeves TV show, where the thug would futily empty out his gun on Superman and then lob the gun at him... and miss.

Singer talked about that in the science of superman thing. he wanted a bad guy to try and shoot Superman in a place that is usually very vulnerable(i have read that the idea was to show how tough Superman was even to the smallest detail of his body) so he thought 'why not the eye?'

Crook-"....sorry..."

Compared to what they can do today, the bullet hitting the eye is no neat trick ok, it's an easy task! so like I said, it looks cool, but there's nothing spectacular about it! Superman flying in this film looking so real, is SPECTACULAR!

well then if it's so easy...i'd love to see you (or ANYONE else) duplicate it with the same attention to detail that they put into it. if you can do that effect and make it look as good then i'll totally agree, but until you know all that it takes to make that shot look as good as it does then you can't say it's an 'easy task'. if it's such an easy task then back your talk up with actions...

...talkers don't do and doers don't talk.
