This couldn't really get me in legal trouble...could it?

This is about a Facebook post and whether it can get me in trouble...but first the back story...

Recently I was contacted about helping a traveling political rally book around my area of the country. I agreed and everything was great. Eventually I learned that the main attraction was actually NOT going to be there. I was told to keep telling the venues that he would be so that they could get nicer venues. They claimed that he WILL be at the first several, but would not be available for my events. I of course refused to book under false pretenses, and sat back waiting to see what would happen next. I ended up not booking a single event.

Then the events started in another part of the country. As it turns out, the headliner was not at any of these events either. I waited for some sort of announcement to be made, but the organizers remained quiet as another and another event happened without him.

I should point out that they were soliciting for donations the entire time while promoting this headliner. They did receive donations, but I have no clue what the amount was.

A few days later they simply packed up and went home. I dont know why. I waited for there to be an announcement made about the cancellations, but no one said much of anything. Meanwhile, they kept the donation link up for people to give money to the cause and left the schedule of events that were supposed to happen stay on their website.

After a few days, I got fed up with the silence. I was an admin on their facebook page, so I used that to get the word out. I simply said that the promised headliner was not at any of the prior events and wouldnt be at any future events, and that in my personal opinion, I felt that people should be able to seek refunds on donations if they felt they had donated under false pretenses.

The reaction I got surprised me. Instead of "thanks for informing us", I got "you should have waited for the owner to post something". I felt like that type of info was something that should be told IMMEDIATELY, but few agreed with me. In fact, people defended their "right" to get donations even if the events were canceled and the headliner was not actually at any of the events.

So...now Im worried that maybe I did something wrong...like...legally. I made it a point in the comments to say that I didnt know who did what wrong or whether or not the headliner was to blame or if there was a contract or whatever (though obviously it was easy to see that I thought SOMEONE did something wrong)...but I dont know...

I would doubt you did anything wrong legally. The headliner will usually keep the donations anyway even if they don't come to your particular venue. Most people won't mind and probably wouldn't have minded donating some money to the headliner anyway even if they didn't get to see it in person. It still helps out the cause, even if people get a little effed about it.

Actually, the idea is that the group never even contracted the headliner (or the headliner broke the contract)...so the group would have kept the money or spent it traveling without the headliner.

I'd be more concerned that the group wasnt affliated with the headliner at all and the whole thing was a scam.

I don't think you can get in trouble at all for this and it sounds like the people who are donating are either blind idiots or don't care, so let them piss their money away. The whole thing sounds like some kind of scam.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

Well, what was the cause, and who did they claim was the speaker? If anyone could be in legal trouble, it would be them for potential fraud.
