For the low, low price of $129.99, the Geek Squad will come to your home... Do I even need to go on? After all, a visit from the honorable techno-soldiers alone is worth at least that much money. But there's even more. With the purchase of a PlayStation 3, the wizards will:
*Set up and install your PS3: This presumably involves taking it out of the box, plugging it into the wall — and here's where things get crazy — into your TV as well.
*Install the latest firmware updates: Gritty work indeed. To do this, the Geek Squadster will power on your controller, flick the "left" button on the directional pad several times, then click "x" to tell your PS3 to download the firmware.
*Set up & configure local user accounts with parental controls: More pushing of the "left" button, followed by more pressing of "x" under the parental controls prompt. This could take as long as 15 seconds. And time is money!
*Set up & configure online account: Typing in your name and e-mail when prompted. This is an especially valuable service to those who are illiterate and/or dyslexic.

Geek Squad also offers a CD ripping service:

Amazing!

I don't shop there because the service is horrible.

Holy god. I can't imagine who could be stupid enough to pay for that. However, I imagine they're probably raking in money.

They scary part is this...

They are making money off of it, and there is people like that. Their computer services are a utter rip too, which is crazy that people pay this much money. Just half of the issues of their own would be solved if they asked around, or do a search. =)

My dad has his own small business where he fixes people's computers, and he was shocked when he learned what the Geek Squad charges people.

When me and Spec bought an HDTV for our apartment there they hooked everything up and it was the simplest ****. Good thing we got the installation free, because they just came in plugged in a couple cords, then annoyingly micromanaged them with ties so if you ever have to move stuff you have a ***** of a time getting things moved.

i shop there only for dvds, if theres one i want thats not at any other store. other than that i cant stand them anymore.

Goddamn. I'm glad they didn't try to sell me that **** when I bought my 360 2 years ago.

I fail to see the issue here. Is there someone volunteering to do this stuff for people who don't know how to do this stuff for free?

If you're not technically savvy enough to figure that stuff out, then you might be willing to pay $129.99 to have it done for you. Is it exhorbitant? Sure. This is simple stuff. But I also think, if you're incapable to the point where you can't figure out this is you getting bilked if you pay for this service instead of calling around to find out the going rates for such work, etc, or calling Tech Support in general...it's on you to a point. After a certain point in this culture, one assumes people who want to use high tech toys would learn to read the instructions and not rely on tech people to do everything for them.

A fool and his money and all that.

The only time I call a tech person is when there's smoke coming from my PC. And by tech person, I mean my brother.

That has never happened to me, so I have no need to call the little bastard.

But it's not that damn hard to hook up a damn gaming console to the TV, get the cords out of the way, and create an online account.

found out from this about SXEPHIL...wtf BB?!?! first my DVD-R of WOLVERINE : THE GAME, and now this

Well... If you don't have much of a choice then you can't complain. I don't even have an electronics store at school, and I would kill to have best within a 30 minute drive. The only electronic store we have at home IS Best buy.

I like Best Buy more than Walmart. More dvd and blu-ray selection. And more selection overall. But screw the Geek Squad. I think my deaf brother hooked up the PS3, but the bro-in-law did the firmware/wi-fi thing.

Off-topic, but I LOVE Sxephil. Him and AVGN rule.
