That might be the case even at a good school. My cousin went to Johns Hopkins for biomedical engineering, and Baltimore is a dump even if it's got one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country. Last Christmas he was mugged at knifepoint outside of his apartment, which is definitely not in gangland Baltimore.
When I went to UC Berkeley for a summer, a friend of a friend got mugged on our street. You just have to be aware of your surroundings.
I definitely always keep my wits when walking places at night; I take my earbuds out, keep my bear-mace within reach, etc. I really could use a trip to the ol' weight room, though.
Mos. Def. There are places in my small town where one would not roam. In college, my brother and I insisted on paying 100 to 150 more, a piece, on an apartment, just to know we lived in a place where we could take groceries out of the car at midnight.
I kinda miss living in a small town. I miss fresh air the most.
