Producers Rush to Appoint Daniel Craig as Conciliation James Bond

A New Breed Of Film Making

After three rejections by popular actors, James Bond has found a taker.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try, and try again. That’s the lesson learned by James Bond film producers in their latest casting ventures.

Stinging from the slap of rejection by having three actors turn down the role of James Bond, this week producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson hastily abandoned plans to search for a youthful success to Pierce Brosnan and named 37-year old Daniel Craig to the 007 throne.

Broccoli had long championed Craig as her choice to play Bond, but was outvoted by disparate opinions of Wilson, Sony Pictures executive Amy Pascal, and director Martin Campbell.

A-List actor and recent Academy Award nominee Clive Owen was offered the role and flatly turned it down, favoring more creative control over his outside roles than the Bond obligation would allow.

Box office star Hugh Jackman was next offered the role. He too turned down the offer.

Although publicizing a strong desire to play James Bond, Jackman was reportedly seeking a bigger payday than the producers were willing to extend.

Licking their wounds from snubs by A-List, Hollywood elite, setting their sites lower the producers extended an olive branch to lesser known but highly heralded up and comer Rikki Lee Travolta.

Hailing from the famous entertainment clan that spawned Academy Award nominee John Travolta, famed director Joey Travolta, and Broadway star Ellen Travolta, the six-foot Shakespearean-trained actor was the focus of a worldwide fan campaign.

Unfortunately, while fans were eager to have Travolta sport the Bond tuxedo, the actor was not so interested. With Travolta entrenched in discussions for what is believed to be a notable comic book-to-film action role, the James Bond franchise received its third rejection.

Rushing to control the media fallout of yet another round of stories citing the tarnished image of Bond, producers needed to announce a successor to the Bond thrown immediately or risk permanent damage to the franchise.

With factions divided over the box office promise of Julian McMahon, the youthful promise of Henry Cavill, and the swarthy good looks of Goran Visnjic, Broccoli was able to take advantage of the immediate need for a decision and push through her longtime favorite Craig.

Although widely unknown to American audiences, the 37 year old Craig comes with a notable resume in British film and television.

Craig, to the delight of the producers, reportedly agreed to the offer, proving that the fourth time is the charm when it comes to Bond, James Bond.

An official announcement is scheduled for Friday.

^ I totally believe the story now that he is a front-runner or in talks. There's no certainty he'll get the role but he clearly REALLY did turn down the Bond role. None of us have likely seen him perform before so maybe he really is good and maybe we just don't know enough about him. Let's see how it pans out. The only thing I don't want is Goyer to direct it. I'm seriously ok with this news except for that part.

Edit:

I just read on a few message boards around that Travolta was up for one of two roles: Captain America & Thor. The article below further confirms he turned down the Bond role but mentions Captain America & not Thor. This is from 2005 though.

I know it's a Contact Music link but Contact Music was NOT the source of the news. They just had it laid out the best.

All of this just doesn't seem right. This guy is a highly heralded up and comer? By who? Come on, this guy isn't even b, c, or d-list actor. This tool better come no where close to Cap.

Movie Version of Marvel Comic’s THOR Moves Forward Towards Sony Production
Mar 25, 2006, 15:10
Posted By Craig Bernstein

MOVIE VINE (March 25, 2006) - ComicBoards.com has confirmed that Rikki Lee Travolta of the famous entertainment family is the top candidate for the planned film adaptation of the Marvel comic book character based on the Nordic deity.

Although many comic-to-film casting decisions are met with distain by diehard graphic novel fans, the Marvel fan community in general and the Thor-specific fans have embraced the concept of John Travolta’s nephew in the role.

“6-foot 1, muscular, long blond hair. Good choice!” summarized one fan in a recent ComicBoards.com posting.

In addition to his muscular frame and model looks, Travolta is both a Shakespearean trained actor and high decorated in martial arts and hand-to-hand combat.

According to the media reports, Travolta turned down an offer to take over the role of James Bond from Pierce Brosnan because if he was to be typecast, he preferred the idea of being typecast in a superhero. Few actors are ever accepted in more than one icon role such as James Bond or Thor.

Following the dismissal of Pierce Brosnan, the role of James Bond was first offered to Clive Owen, then Hugh Jackman, and then Travolta. All three actors turned the role down leading to the acceptance of the opportunity by Daniel Craig.

David Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins) is reporting writing the script for the initial Thor feature film for production through Sony Pictures. Goyer also has expressed an interest in directing the feature.

They're talking about for his Stage Performances not his film career. If there's any Marvel character that would fit a stage performer wouldn't Thor fit in the most with Shakespearean type acting. I think we're all thinking he's a second rate nobody because he's the brother of a famous star...as I did. Let's see what happens. If he's good...I'm all for it. I just hope if he gets the role he really is good. Here's also a whole list of news from other sources regarding the Bond role and More

And here's a bit more history:

Rikki Lee Travolta screen-tested for Bond?
Posted by: Paul Heath
Source: 'LL'
Date: 19th August 2005

According to a source in the Screen Actors Guild, ponytailed actor Rikki Lee Travolta of the well known entertainment family was ushered from the Chicago set of 'Crime Fiction' and flown to London for a closed door screentest for what is only being described as 'a franchise action role.' The news comes on the heels of a report that actor Hugh Jackman has declined a three picture offer to play the title character in the James Bond action film franchise. In 2004 Jackman and Travolta were identified in the press as two of the final contenders under consideration to take over the Bond role from Pierce Brosnan. The shortlist of contenders was nicknamed 'the Bond Five' and consisted of Jackman, Travolta, Eric Bana, Clive Owen, and Adrian Paul. Following the acquisition of MGM Studios by Sony Pictures, by July 2005 it was believed that the focus for Bond casting had moved to a stable of Goran Visnjic, Henry Cavill, Alex O'Lachlan, and Ewan Stewart, with Jackson and Travolta as backburner considerations, and Owen, Bana, and Paul eliminated from contention. Following screentests by Visnjic, Cavill, O?Lachlan, and Stewart at Pinewood Studios under the supervision of director Michael Campbell in late July, no decision was announced.

Instead, news leaked on August 12 that Jackman had been offered a three picture deal and turned it down. If Travolta was indeed beckoned to the U.K to test for Bond as the timeline of events suggests, it could be a hairy situation on the set. O'Lachlan reported that for his screen test the producers had his hair cut to their specifications. Travolta, however, is under contract to play Jesus Christ in an upcoming feature and cannot shed his should-length locks until filming completes. If the rush London screentest was for a rival franchise role, speculation has Travolta's long mane giving an uncannily ideal look for the title character in the film adaptation of the comic book 'Thor' which Marvel confirmed on July 28, 2005 as being in development. Marvel is also developing feature adaptations of 'Captain America', 'Nick Fury', 'Silver Surfer', and 'Killraven.' Travolta's representatives were not available for comment. Principal photography on the twenty-first James Bond feature 'Casino Royale' is scheduled to begin January 17, 2006 for a planned October 2006 release.

The story quote comicboards.com as the source. Where is it on there? I never saw it.

I've heard Rikki's a good stage actor, he's been around Chicago in Second City and Tony and Tina's Wedding among other things, but if this is true, it does seem to come straight out of left field. I wouldn't be surprised if it's fake news that been planted to get him some buzz for the role.

Seriously. I'm so not sold on this Travolta guy.

"I am humbly flattered by the overwhelming outpouring of support. Although extremely honored, after very careful consideration I feel that James Bond might not be the best vehicle for me to commit to at this point."

"At this time there are superhero opportunities that are naturally akin to Rikki Lee Travolta’s charisma and physique that make too much sense not to consider. That would not be possible with the long term schedule obligations of a slate of secret agent films," stated manager Drake Miezel.

Marvel Studios, a division of Marvel Entertainment, is currently planning live-action feature film adaptations of comic book properties including Captain American, Nick Fury, and Thor. Avi Arad, president of Marvel Entertainment, stated at Wizard World LA that the film adaptation of Thor is in aggressive development and predicts it to be on the same epic level as Peter Jackson’s "Lord of the Rings."

D.C. Comics properties being developed for film include The Flash, which is slated to be written and helmed by "Batman Begins" scribe David Goyer. Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to the D.C. Comics graphic novel "The Psycho." Stephen Sommers and business partner Bob Ducsay are developing a film based on "Flash Gordon."

"There are so many talented actors who would be interested in playing James Bond and the franchise has strong leadership that knows what it is doing and has never failed. I have the utmost faith that James Bond fans will be well rewarded for their patience and that Casino Royale will be a crowning achievement in a franchise that will continue to succeed indefinitely," stated Travolta.

Just another quote I think you'd all find interesting.

Also if you go to http://www.travoltanet.com check out the pic on the right. He looks like Thor.

Avi Arad!!! you idiot.

Avi's an idiot because he's possibly a front-runner? He was also an idiot for hiring Bryan Singer, Sam Raimi, Ang Lee, Hugh Jackman, Eric Bana, Tobey McGuire, Tom Jane, and all the other no-names. LOL

Why do you think Marvel is starting their own studio and opening up message boards at http://www.marvel.com Hmmmm. Let's see how this story pans out. We know the "james bond" part is true and that he was up for a comics 2 film role per his agent...that's it.

So they can make a Super Secret part of the Message Boards & when they want to Cast an Un Known or they are looking for Extras in a Crowd Scene or something they go to the fans ? ? ?

No so they can get fans input on all aspects of their business. It's a company made up of fan based product. Why do you think employee's from Marvel read these boards, the finance boards at Yahoo, and other places. Why do you think toy companies test out their products with children years before releasing them. Marvel and companies like Marvel have the rare opportunity to talk to or listen in to a large portion of their fans. Before they could just look at the box office results and crap reviews of movies like Elektra and Blade Trinity...Marvel does listen. I also believe Zak Penn & Kinberg listen to the fans at the X-Verse and take their thoughts seriously and who knows down the road might really take some ideas or preferences to their pens. It's called feedback. I have an honest feeling that when Iron Man was in the works that the Timberlake rumor was a bit more than that. It was probably a little bait to throw out there because Cassevetes wanted him for the role and Marvel and New Line wanted to see the reaction...which was horrible. Next thing you know New Line can't get anything done and they lose the rights. Look what Harry Knowles has done to several films in production. Thank God Ratner has thick skin.

^ McG is now going to direct Thor and Ben Affleck is going to voice over a new character known as Thor Dog which will be a CGI dog with God-Like powers that will fight side by side with Thor. ;)

Sounds good.

hahah that travolta guy is a joke. I'd rather see Brad Pitt (troy status) playing thor.

Goyer is a pretty decent writer,He's not Eric Roth (Forest Gump,Munich) or Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby,Crash) But he does alright, with Batman Begins script being his best..He can't direct a film to save his life..Blade Trinity was a mess,He ain't no Martin Scorese that's for sure.

This bit made me laugh-

'Few actors are ever accepted in more than one icon role such as James Bond or Thor.'
