Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 2

The franchise as a whole, and the character are quite healthy. The second film was simply a misstep in my opinion. Using terms like "redeem" is a bit much to my eyes and ears.

The Dark World made an underwhelming performance compared to the first film, so I don't think to "redeem" itself is too strong a word.

I think whether or not the Thor franchise needs to "redeem" itself is subjective.

I quite liked both Thor movies and therefore IMO the franchise doesn't need to "redeem" itself (unlike how the X-Men franchise needed to redeem itself after last stand and X-Men origins: Wolverine).

Out of interest, was there anything specific about Thor 2 you didn't like or was it just a general disappointment because you liked the first better?

T:TDW was a complete underachievement.

Redeeming means different things to different people and arguing over it is simply splitting hairs. Fact are facts - it was the worst performer of all the "sequels" in Phase 2 and the only movie outside of Ant-Man not to crack $700 million.

IMO that's a damn shame given who the lead actor is and the material.

I was talking about the general reception.

Me personally, I thought Erik Selvig running naked was stupid and completely unnecessary, and I was unable to enjoy the movie on my first view, I had a lot of fun with the first Thor movie since the first view.

Yup yup and tbh I'm thinking Taika is not the guy to redeem this franchise, I'm not very confident in This movie at all.

Aside from some people not being able to discern when Taika is being sarcastic, I haven't seen anything to make me think he'll do a bad job.

I might be in the minority on this, but I really hope they find some way to add a brutal and destructive Thor vs. Hulk fight in Thor 3. I mean they have to. There’s no way you can have Hulk in a Thor movie and not have the two fight, even though we’ve seen it already. The short duel in Avengers was good, but I hope to see something as epic, brutal and crazy as Superman vs. Zod in MoS. Unlikely though.

And have it end as a draw :woot:

Thor I wonder if he will finally wear his helmet in this one?

One way to do this would be if they truly are folding elements of Planet Hulk into this film. Maybe Hulk is being forced to fight as a gladiator on Sakaar or a stand-in planet. Thor finds him here, but has to fight him to destroy the control disk that is keeping him enraged (like the thing on Hulk's nipple in the picture below...), or something like that. They can have an extremely intense throwdown before Thor gets a clear shot to destroy the disk. I know it's not exactly how it was in the real PH storyline, but it could be adjusted for the purposes of the film.

Yeah, getting Hulk in the gladiator gear at some point would be a great visual.

Gotta agree with both of you. Hell, it can even be Hel if they insist. It'll be tough to pull off, but I could stomach a gladiator type environment in the realm of Hel. How they get him there is the better question.

But the best question is whether this film will be any better than the last two Thor films. As it stands now both of them are sitting pretty at the bottom of my MCU list. But if this movie is substantially any good, I could see it bringing up the entire trilogy. Its all a matter of execution.

Amora could also be a worthwhile substitute for the nipple control disc. And we could see a Skurge v Hulk battle.

****, if it came down to it in the final battle,
Skurge v Hulk
Surtur v Thor
Amora v Loki
could get really exciting.

This movie better be 3 hours long. :P

I was very disappointed by TDW but I still hold the first film in high regard.

For me, I guess it's bittersweet. As a marvel origin movie, its not so bad. Can't stand the Jane relationship and its light on action for a Thor superhero flick, but not so bad. They actually did a phenomenal job adapting a character's comparatively silly origin story (donald blake, nurse jane, etc.)

But as like, the first legitimate big budget movie about viking gods (Marvel or not), it's clean and pristine and safe and somewhat dull. Basically a RomCom in disguise. I mean Foo Fighters in the end credits...

I desperately want to attempt to recut the film myself with Scandinavian folk metal throughout. [YT]JFYVcz7h3o0[/YT]So all that being said, I actually give the leg up to the grittier, Journey into Mystery'er Thor:TDW. But only by the smallest of margins.

Well Cate has confirmed her appearance in the movie; not sure if that was confirmed before or not.

Yeah, it's nice to see that she's actually excited about being in this movie, calling it a "gift".

At this point, they could do an Ant-Man and give him just a chrome cap and then CG the helmet on later, to avoid having the helmet slam Hemsworth in the nose during action shots

but Thor's MCU look is pretty well established at this point, so unless he becomes King Thor, I doubt we'll see the helmet, sadly

well truthfully we've never seen him technically lead anyone into war either.. so that could have something to do with the fact as to why we've not seen him with a helmet

if he was leading an asgardian army i could see them giving it to him

Given the comic book storyline behind Ragnarok, I hope this movie is a bit more dark. I know that the light/funny/dark/brooding labels have been thrown around a lot (Marvel vs DC and all that), but one of the things that really bothered me with TDW was the humour. It just seemed like a lot. Especially after Loki's "death" and the cellphone scene. Yeeks.

I did really love the first Thor and I think if Thor 3 is darkened up enough with Asgard at stake, it will be more emotionally investing.

I know this is just semantics, but I think rather than "dark," the overall tone should just be a bit more "serious" with Asgard in peril. However, I don't think that means that movie needs to be without humor. It's just that the humor needs to be in the appropriate places.

What ultimately bugs TDW down for me are the earth scenes involving Jane, Darcy,Selvig and Ian,which unfortunately took 15-20 minutes of the runtime. Thor on earth is always funny in a good way and I loved everything else happening on asgard and svartalfheim. Give me more of that and I'm game. Feige said there is very little earth in this one,Selvig won't appear so it seems they are doing the right things.
