But I heard even Depp's not sure when he'll do the next Pirates. He likes the character, but if he doesn't like the next script he may walk.

I will be extremely disappointed if Thor falls behind Bridesmaids. Thor only needs $29 million (give or take) to have a global total of $400 million. $500 million seems like a far shot at this point, but $420 million should still be possible. Does anyone know if the $150 million budget included Marvel's marketing? If not, then does anyone know how much was spent on marketing?

Of course it is going to make more than 420. It will make 450. And it has been behind Bridesmaids since Monday.

What I don't understand is why they released the movie knowing that Pirates was only two weeks ahead!
I thought Superman Returns has taught everyone a lesson.
15 million is kinda ******. I hope it hits 170mil domestically (at least)!!

Why? At ths point, it's simply d--k measuring Thor against other franchises. Thor was a success and there is going to be a sequel.

Thor is doing as well as can be expected with Pirates 4 coming out. And 200mil is still not out of the question.

Well, that is disheartening. I never understood the attraction of seeing a comedy in a theater. A joke is not made more humorous by a larger screen or surround sound. I mean, everyone has their preference, but for me, a trip to the theater is about adventure, other worlds and feeling engrossed by the atmosphere. To that end, seeing a huge city scape and a massive battle, is more appealing on a larger screen (sort of a metacognitive situation in which larger than life events are literally shown as larger than life). Oh well, I knew Thor was a front loaded film and said as much several pages ago. It has still drawn a large audience and is a success. Not quite as huge a success as I thought, but there should be no problems with Marvel being willing to fund a sequel.

It's the atmosphere of the room. Laughing with an audience-- with a crowd, is considerably more fun than in a living room or at a computer desk by oneself.

This was to be expected. But that being said, Pirates 4 is underperforming whereas Thor is surpassing expectations.

This is sort of what I expected this weekend. A sizeable dropoff. But next weekend the dropoff will be much smaller because of the holiday. So next weekend Thor will be over $160 million-ish.

I figured Pirates might be under 100M for the weekend. I think the first film to break the 100M weekend mark this summer, might be Harry Potter or Transformers.

Transformers moved to a Wednesday opening again. So it won't have a traditional 3-day weekend opening.

I hope it's Captain America :D . That is the movie the country needs right now.

I think Thor can still eke out something for another week. But starting June, I'm packing bags to Cap forum to show support.

I was hoping Thor could make 20 million over the weekend, well I guess that's out the window.

Not out of the question but unlikely. I'm pitching my tent between 170 and 180

$200 million domestic was always a longshot considering that Thor needed a 3x multiplier.

This is an all ages board, go pitch a tent on your own time!

It could be as low as $145M if everything that can go wrong does go wrong but still that's where it'll be at least by that time.

Well at least my low-end prediction came true. Hopefully the actuals will paint a better picture.

Weekend Estimates $15,500,000 -55.3%

Also 'Pirates Caribbean 4' Soft $90.1M Domestic; Saved By Biggest 5-Day International $256.3M, 4th Highest Global Cume $346.4M.

I think this drop was to be expected. I don't think anyone should be that disappointed. This was the 3rd weekend, and it is better to have that steeper drop now than it was to have in the 2nd weekend.

If Captain America gets 100 mil opening weekend, I will die happy. I think Potter and likely Transformers both accomplish that feat.

Really, this film just needs to leap the hurdle of $400 million. While it would be nice if it had a larger gross here in the U.S., that is ultimately unimportant as far as the fate of this franchise is concerned. Once it reaches $400 million, I have a hard time imagining Marvel turning down the opportunity to produce a sequel.

Passing 400 million WW is guaranteed. 500 million is more in question, but I agree, I see no way Thor doesn't get a sequel. For a first film in a franchise, it has shown promise. Thor 2 will be more hyped.
